Springfield Duo to Play Collegiate Field Hockey

On May 20, 2015, Springfield seniors Katherine McVeagh and Tara Murphy were recognized at a special signing celebration for committing to play field hockey at the collegiate level. Katherine McVeagh – University of Scranton (Field Hockey)

Final list of colleges:  Scranton, Ursinus, Susquehanna
Reasons for choosing Scranton:  “I knew I wanted to play for a Division 3 program at a school with an excellent academic reputation, a strong major in my area of study and that wasn’t too far from home, making the University of Scranton a perfect choice. When I visited with the players and coaches, I felt very welcomed and comfortable. I can’t wait to be part of the team!”
What was the progression that led you to playing field hockey at the collegiate level?  “I started thinking about playing college field hockey when I started playing the sport competitively and for a club team in seventh grade. The recruiting process started in ninth grade when I began attending college showcases and tournaments.”
Coach Linda Nixon says:  “Katherine was a captain, and she was a captain both in her play and her leadership skills. She did a lot for the team as far as helping to build it into a team, and she always led by example. She loved hockey, played hockey and played more hockey.”

Tara Murphy – American University (Field Hockey)

Psychology
Final list of colleges:  American, Ohio State, Old Dominion, Northwestern
Reasons for choosing American:  “American provides an awesome combination of competitive academics and athletics. The field hockey program is one of the top Division One programs, and I cannot wait to be part of such intense play.”
What was the progression that led you to playing field hockey at the collegiate level?  “I have always just known that I was going to play in college. I have had the perspective since probably seventh grade that I was going to continue playing at the collegiate level.”
Coach Linda Nixon says:  “Tara had great ball control, great vision and really good speed. We wish her well at American.”
