John Derr – West Chester University (Football)
Major: Undecided
Final list of colleges: West Chester, Kutztown, Bloomsburg
Reasons for choosing West Chester: “West Chester was my number one the whole time, that’s where I wanted to go. My brother (Andrew) does go there, so I know a little bit about the program and the school. I visited a couple of times. I met the staff and they were nice. I met some of the players, and they were also very nice. I like the area, and it’s a good program. That’s why I was very interested.”
What was the progression that led you to playing football at the collegiate level? “I started thinking about it my junior year. I just really love the sport, and I wanted to continue. I have playing since I was little.”
Coach Bret Stover says: “The Derr family in general has been great for Upper Dublin. With both his parents being Upper Dublin grads, it’s a nice tradition for Andrew and John following in their footsteps. John had the best year ever in school history for a quarterback rushing for us as far as yards and rushing touchdowns, so that was a great accomplishment for him. West Chester has got themselves a heck of a player – both players. They got both Andrew and John.
“John put the team on his back pretty much all year. He did things that we just shook our head at because it wasn’t plays we called for him – it was what he did when things broke down. That was the intangible that helped us be successful. Players like John don’t come along very often.”
