UD's Flynn Signs to Swim at Rider

On Monday, Nov. 19, 2012, Upper Dublin senior Ian Flynn was recognized for signing a letter of intent to swim at Rider University.

Ian Flynn – Rider University (Swimming)

Major:  Geology/Environmental Sciences

Reasons for choosing Rider: “The coach. Coach (Steve) Fletcher was absolutely fantastic. I was extremely impressed with how individually he takes each member of the team and focuses on them. Everyone is given equal attention and just so much of it. It’s such a small team. It’s not like most big Division 1 teams with multiple coaches. It’s just him and one assistant for both boys and girls.”

What was the progression that led you to swimming at the collegiate level? “At the end of my junior year, my coach sat down with me and said, ‘You did great things this year. You’ve really come along, but you have so much more potential if you actually push yourself.’ Before, I never really thought about it. I never thought I’d be able to do that. After that, I was like, ‘I have a chance to do this,’ and I still have the potential to grow and get better.”

Upper Dublin coach Geoff Scheuer says:  “Ian is the consummate professional. He is one of the most polite kids that I’ve ever known in my life. He’s polite almost to a fault. I think that’s the thing that stands out more than anything. He really is a gentleman, and you really don’t see that often with 17-year-old boys, but he is that.
“In terms of him being an athlete, he’s a great worker. He’s very focused on learning and doing whatever he can to be better in terms of technique and things like that, so he takes that professional attitude right into the pool with him. That has led to unbelievable improvement over the past few years.”

Upper Dublin assistant coach Brandon Pierce says:  “I think he really impressed himself with how fast he did swim over the past year, and it did really change his focus on what he could do and his potential.
“You always think of a professional as someone who does something so many times until they can’t do it wrong anymore, and that’s exactly what Ian is. He has worked on his technique and will always ask. A lot of kids will ask about their technique and work on it for a little bit. He is one that just works on it until he doesn’t do it wrong anymore, and that hard work has really paid off.”
