Sydney Szopo – La Salle University (Diving)

Major: Nursing

Final list of colleges:  La Salle, Penn State, Wagner

Reasons for choosing La Salle:  “The atmosphere and the people. They have an amazing team, and I actually knew the coach previously. Their campus is beautiful and small. It’s the right size for me.”

What was the progression that led you to diving at the collegiate level?  “Immediately when I started diving, I knew that I wanted to just because I could see the progression of how my scores were advancing and I was getting much better. When my sister was thinking about it, so was I. It’s always been a goal to pursue for us.”

Coach Melanie Rowland says:  “Sydney has been my main go-to girl. I don’t coach her, but I love seeing her, I love talking to her. She keeps the team even keel. When we were having difficulties, she was like, ‘Got it, Mel.’
“I love watching her dive. She is a hard worker, and I don’t mean just with her diving but in school with her friends and with her family. She absolutely loves and adores her sister (Natalee) but also knew that this was her year to be Syd and not just in her sister’s shadow. She got to be an individual.
“She took first in states and districts – how can you not love someone who works that hard because it takes a lot of hard work to make it to that level.”
