Emily Sanceciz – Kutztown University (Swimming)

Major:  Education

Final list of colleges:  Kutztown, Millersville

Reasons for choosing Kutztown:  “Once I went to Kutztown and I got on campus, I met the girls on the team, I met the coach, and I just knew it was the place I needed to be – it felt like home.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in swimming at the collegiate level?  “Going into my freshman year is when I knew I wanted to swim in college because I had a setback in eighth grade, so I came back to the pool in ninth grade with more heart and determination than I think I ever had, and I just knew I wanted to get to this level.”

Coach Melanie Rowland says:  “Emily has a light side to her – she’s got a smile on her face all of the time. Even when she’s in discomfort with her shoulders because as a swimmer that’s one of your key injuries, she never quits, she keeps going. She finds another way to fight through. If she has to adjust her swim style for that day for practice, she does, but when she comes out for a meet, you wouldn’t even know that anything ever is bothering her. She’s very upbeat with her entire team, she leads by example, she laughs with the best of them, and she also comforts anybody who might need a little ‘attaboy’ because maybe they didn’t do as well as they wanted to do that day. She sets goals, and she maintains them. She’s been a captain for two years, but in my eyes, she probably could have been a captain all four years. That’s the kind of person she is.

“Her strengths lie with butterfly, and that’s a stroke not many people like to do. She went to districts in that event. She’s in our relays, she’s a sprinter, and she would do anything we asked her to do other than diving off the board. She also swims for a club team, the Dolphins. It’s been a lot of fun watching her swim. I’ve been really honored and blessed to have her as part of the team that is small but mighty, and she’s one of the reasons we’re mighty.”
