Maureen Devlin – St. Joseph’s University (Tennis)

Major:  Undecided

Final list of colleges:  St. Joe’s, Towson

Reasons for choosing St. Joe’s:  “My older sister is there, so I think a big part of it was feeling comfortable. I really like the coach – I’ve talked to him a lot. I feel comfortable with him, and I think I can improve a lot.”

What was the progression that led you to playing collegiate tennis?  “I’ve always wanted to play tennis in college. I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to play D-1, but as I got older, I definitely kept pursuing it.”

Coach Mary Ellen Devlin says:  “Maureen has always brought a high portion of athleticism to her game. She competed in other sports when she was young, which was a very good foundation for the competitive side of tennis that in the biggest matches ends up being a mental edge. It translates into a confidence on big points, and that’s the margin that wins big matches.
“Also, her work ethic. In tennis, you’re alone, so there is no one else to count on. You have to draw from within. The work ethic on and off the court and the physical training off the court is also a piece of tennis, and that simply comes from the individual. That’s not the coach. The coach can encourage it, but the athlete has to pursue it. Maureen did that, and the results start to speak for themselves. Along with a very good attitude and a willingness to learn and be coached – that often means working on your weaknesses to develop a higher level.”
