Melanie Fry – Misericordia University (Track/Field Hockey)

Major: Physical Therapy

Final list of colleges:  Misericordia, Lebanon Valley, Ithaca, Nazareth College

Reasons for choosing Misericordia:  “It was partially their program because they have a six-and-a-half year doctorate program for physical therapy. Also, I think it was a very good distance away from home and a very good size.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in track at the collegiate level?  “I always wanted to run in college. Originally, I thought maybe for a club team depending on where I went, but then I decided – you know what, I actually really could run in college, and then it definitely became something I wanted to do. Last year I started having a lot of success, and a lot of my hard work started paying off.”

Coach Heidi Butt says:  “Melanie Fry was a force to be reckoned with from her freshman year on.  She will be the first to tell you that she doesn't present as a typical sprinting threat...until the gun goes off.  Not only did she increase in her leadership over her four-year varsity career, but she kept getting better.  A lot of high school girls plateau in their times or even decline in performance.  Mel got faster and faster and FASTER!  This was not by pure genetic blessing.  Mel works so hard and the drive comes from her.  Mel ran in the postseason every year and ended her career on the highest note possible.  She and her teammates - Anna Chiodo Ortiz ('15), Liz Carney ('14), and Lotte Black ('16) - finished seventh at the PIAA Championship Meet in the 4x400 meter relay.  I think this is where Mel really shines - when she is working with others that share her same joyful passion.  It has been a sincere pleasure coaching Mel.  She came in as a talented but insecure freshman and is going out as a successful, gracious senior.”
