Danny Knoll – Marist College (Swimming)

Major:  History

Final list of colleges:  Marist, Penn State

Reasons for choosing Marist:  “Originally, I was pretty set on going to Marist, and then after my last swim meet at states, I got a couple of looks from the bigger schools. One of them was Penn State, so I was kind of torn between Marist and Penn State. I visited both of them and had a tough decision, but it came down to my gut feeling. Marist was there from the start.”

What was the progression that led you to swimming at the collegiate level?  “I actually started swimming relatively late – I started in about eighth grade. I realized I had potential in swimming my freshman year, the beginning of my sophomore year. Once I realized I could be really good at swimming, I decided this is what I wanted to do in college. I realized I was putting a lot of time and effort into swimming, and I was kind of wondering – what’s the point of it because it was taking up a lot of my time. I started not to have a social life in the winter because between homework and swimming, it was a lot. I wanted it to pay off, I wanted to make something out of it, and the best thing to do was swim in college.”

Coach John High says:  “Going back to Danny’s freshman year, he was a worker. He came in and he put the time in and didn’t give up until the last set in the pool. Even the last stroke of each set, he finished hard. It was really his work ethic that pushed him to be as good as he was. Especially coming into his senior year, he took the initiative to lift over the summer and concentrated on some things that would help him throughout the season. That process started at the end of his junior year. Usually at the end of the year, kids are done with it, and he’s coming up trying to think of what he can do for his senior year. I really think that’s why he stands apart from the majority of the swimmers that we have.”
