Shawn Young – West Chester University (Track & Field)

Major: Business

Final list of colleges: West Chester, Moravian

Reasons for choosing West Chester:  “I just really liked it there. Originally, I picked the school for the town and the whole atmosphere. Then I wanted to run there. It’s a good school academically too.”

What was the progression that led you to competing in track at the collegiate level?  “I didn’t really think about it until I had to start looking for colleges. Then it was – do I want to run for college? It was like – you’ve done this every day for so long that you can’t picture yourself not running.”

Coach Greg Wetzel says:  “Shawn has been a really special athlete. He was our most valuable athlete on the track and field team this spring. He had 164 points – 75 points is enough to win a dual meet for a team. He had more than enough points to win two dual meets by himself. Shawn tied a 40-year-old school record of 38.6 seconds for the 300-meter intermediate hurdles. We’ve had a lot of very good athletes come and go in the last 40 years that haven’t been able to touch that record, and Shawn tied it. He not only tied it but also ran a 38.7 in a meet within a week of that. It was no fluke. It was the result of a lot of hard work. Shawn leaves having put his mark on the school in that event and also the 4x400 relay. He was one of the four guys (along with Greg Branch, Austin Kline and Ethan Long) that broke the school record in that event as well.”
