Mikey Zedroga – Marquette University (Lacrosse)

Major:  Exercise Physiology

Final list of colleges:  Marquette, Ohio State, Drexel, Villanova, Hofstra, Amherst, Dartmouth

Reasons for choosing Marquette:  “Marquette was the second school I visited. I visited Villanova and then Marquette. Once I stepped on the campus, it was amazing. I love the city, and it was a five-minute walk from downtown. If you want to get away from the campus, you can just go to the city and hang out. Lake Michigan is a 10-minute walk. You can go down and hang out by the lake. I didn’t want a campus that was too big and spread out. I really liked how it was compact. It just had a really good feel. I also liked the coaches. I felt like when I first met him, I made a connection right away, and that was a good feel.
“I also like the academics. They’re 12th in the country for physical therapy, so that was also a big part of it. Overall, their school is 75th in the country. They’re also good at other sports too. Their men’s and women’s soccer won the Big East this year, and their men’s basketball team is always top 20. Their women’s team is coming up, and their volleyball team was top 15. This is their second year for the lacrosse program, and that was another thing. Hofstra has a very rich tradition in lacrosse, and Ohio State is traditionally strong. I felt as though at Marquette we can build something and make our own name. Instead of living up to someone, we can build for kids to live up to us and start the tradition at Marquette.”

What was the progression that led you to playing lacrosse at the collegiate level?  “In fifth grade when I started playing lacrosse, I kind of thought maybe I could do something with it. I was deciding between lacrosse and football. When I got to ninth grade, that’s when I really just wanted to play lacrosse in college. I started taking it really seriously. In 10th grade, I started getting recruited, and I made my decision last year on Nov. 5. The club team I played for, Duke’s Lacrosse Club - I made the team in 10th grade. They’re one of the best club teams in the area. Everyone who is on the team is basically committed. They really helped me out with recruiting. The same thing with the Main Line Lacrosse Club - they’re coached by the Villanova staff, so they give you college experience. When you’re on the field, they teach you so you’re ready for the college game. They also help you with recruiting.”

Coach Brady McCormick says:  “Mikey is never going to quit. He’s heart, he’s hustle, and he’s got a ton of talent. He’s still on the rise as far as talent is concerned. I don’t think we’ve seen everything even close to what he can do yet, which is pretty amazing considering everything he’s provided for us and everything he’s done so far.
“He’s a strong player. After last year, he is tied for the single season record in goals. He’s number one and number two for single season ground balls. He’s first all-time in ground balls. He’s the total package.”
