Abington Boys' Volleyball Preview

ABINGTON BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL PREVIEW

Coach: Christine Steinmetz (2nd year)

Assistant coaches: Crystal Presta (second season), Jason Barshinger (first season)

Last year’s record:  8-9

Notable losses:  We had a large senior class last year that provided a lot of leadership that will be missed this year.  TJ Dougherty did a fabulous job transitioning to setter for us last season, and his on and off court presence will be missed this year.  Jason Lockhart, Shane Collins and Josh Harkins hard work on the net as well as Charlie Violas tough defense are all areas our team this year is working tirelessly to replace.

Key returners:  We are returning our sophomore libero, Sean Dougherty, who does a fabulous job of running our defense.  As well as senior middle hitter Juan Perez and junior outside hitter Danny Gonzalez.  Both of them are solid all-around players who provide great offensive options as well as good team leadership skills.

Others to watch:  Junior setters Taulant Kurti and Ross Armon are doing a great job adjusting to the varsity court and running our teams offense.

Strengths/Questions marks:  This season I think one of our team’s biggest strengths is their ability to play together on the court.  All of the players are working hard to improve their skills and work as a unit to accomplish the goals they set for themselves at the beginning of the season.  We have some tall athletic kids at the net who are improving our offense as well as hard working defenders who help to make us a well-rounded team.”

Outlook:  “If I could describe the outlook of our team in one word, it would be enthusiastic.  They have been energetic since open gyms and working hard every day at practice.  Some goals they set for themselves were to have a winning season and win a district game this year.  I think with the work ethic and skills we have on our team this year, those goals are both well within our reach.  I am excited as a coach to see how much growth they have shown so far and the level of hard work and dedication everyone is putting in each practice to improve their own playing as well as elevate the level of play for the team as a whole.”
