Abington Girls' Soccer Preview

ABINGTON GIRLS’ SOCCER PREVIEW

Head coach:  Rick Tompkins (4th year)

Assistant coaches:  Jay Weidner, Mallory Mugnier, Rich Greene

Last year’s record:  7-11

Notable losses:  “We lost Molly Wyman who scored 14 goals. She is continuing her career at Penn State Abington where she joins one of my assistant coaches, Mallory Mugnier.  We also lost Kayla Nolan, a very effective offensive player whose specialty was taking on players and crossing the ball into the box. She will also join Mallory and Molly at Penn State. Molly and Kayla were two of the three captains last year, and we will miss their leadership.”

Key returners:  Four-year starter and captain, Emily Rankin, a defender; Julia Guarini, a sophomore midfielder and Gabby Nolan, a junior midfielder.

Others to watch:  Sophomore defender Toni Washington, who is recovering from a torn ACL and hopes to contribute soon, Senior defender Jess Domansky and newcomer Marissa Heath, a speedy offensive threat.

Strengths:  Midfield depth and Rankin’s leadership.

Question marks:  “The biggest question mark is who will step up to take on the goal scoring mantle.”

Outlook:  “I believe this is the best team I have had since I started at Abington, but we play a brutal conference schedule. We have not beaten Neshaminy, Council Rock North, Council Rock South or Pennsbury for the last 13 seasons (104 meetings) but expect to break the ice this season.”
