Upper Moreland Girls' Basketball Preview

UPPER MORELAND GIRLS’ BASKETBALL PREVIEW

Coach:  Matt Carroll (3rd year at Upper Moreland)

Assistant coaches: Scott Merrill, Mark Wasson, Pete Williams

Last year’s record:  10-13 overall (6-8 conference) Lost in 1st round of District 1 5A playoffs to W.C. Henderson

Notable losses:  Cassidy Murphy, Caitlin Corr, Hannah Stainback

Key returners: Phoebe Longstreth (Sr., Guard) Bean Hughes (Jr., Forward)

Others to watch:  “With only graduating three seniors we bring back a strong core of our varsity team from last year. Kaiya Herb (Fr., Guard) and Abby Ellen Wood (Jr. Guard) are two returning varsity players who are poised to take the next step at the varsity level. Those two, along with Longstreth and Hughes, look to lead an athletic group who will try to make life difficult for their opponents.”

Strengths/Question Marks:  “Our ability to get up and down the court both offensively and defensively will be a strength of our’s this year. What we lack in overall size we make up for with speed, quickness, and athleticism. This is the first year in our coaching staff’s tenure where we will be able to confidently go deeper into our bench and get quality minutes from a lot of players.”

Outlook: “Our program exceeded expectations last year going from 0 wins in 2016-2017 to 10 in 2017-2018. Having Abington join our side of SOL and a more difficult non-conference schedule, we know reaching and exceeding last year’s win total will be much more difficult this time around. The girls and coaches know what it takes to take the next step and are ready to take on the challenge. Returning our top two scorers from last year in Longstreth and Hughes will certainly help but we need our supporting staff to really step up this year and I know they are ready for the challenge.”
