Pennsbury Comments

A little more than 20 minutes into its season opener Wednesday evening at Wissahickon, about the last thing that the Pennsbury girls lacrosse team figured to be doing at the end of the game was celebrating. And yet there were the Falcons when it finally ended, flying off the team bench together, all smiles, after digging their way out of an early hole for an unlikely, but highly satisfying, victory.

Pennsbury fell behind by six goals after 20 minutes and then shifted up a few gears, rallying to tie the game on a late Sarah Mac Davis free position goal and then winning it 12-11 in overtime on Lilly Nolan's third goal of the game, assisted by Emelie Curtis.

Annie Price led Pennsbury with five goals, and sophomore goalie Natalie Smith made 15 saves, nine in the first half, when the game really could have gotten away from the Falcons.

Pennsbury scored first, on a goal by Boston College field hockey commit Nell Webber, but the Trojans went on a big run, going up 7-1 after 20 minutes. Even after Price got one back, Wissahickon answered again, making it an 8-2 game.

The lead was still four for Wissahickon at 11-7 with 11:43 to play before Curtis sandwiched two free position goals around Price's fifth, making it 11-10 with 6:23 left.

Davis brought the Falcons all the way back with her own free position score with 2:54 to go in the second half, and neither team would score for the rest of regulation.

Wissahickon won the draw to start the overtime but turned it over. Pennsbury would clear, and then, after the teams traded turnovers near the Trojan goal (running the total number of turnovers between the teams for the night to 42), the F&M bound Nolan ended it when she curled around the goal, took a feed from Curtis and scored the winner.

Wissahickon fell to 1-3 o the year.
