COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 3, PENNSBURY 0 (25-11, 25-18, 26-24)
Talk about celebrating Senior Night in style.
The Indians did just that on Thursday, sweeping the Falcons for the first time in Kinsey Lynch’s 10-year tenure at the helm.
“I think a huge, huge momentum factor was the fact that it was Senior Night,” said Lynch, whose roster includes six seniors. “The girls just played out of their minds. It was probably was one of the most memorable matches – if not the most memorable match – I’ve coached in my life.
“The kids just played so well. In the third game, we were down 19-11, and we ended up coming back and winning. We had a couple of little lapses, but we were still feeling confident. They stayed relaxed and poised and knew they had to turn it on because they really wanted to try to beat them in three.”
The Indians received huge contributions from their seniors. Megan Hannagan and Hailey Burns each had six kills. Burns also had 16 digs. Krista Campbell had 24 assists while Carson Easterly had four aces, four kills and 14 digs. Erica Rummel had a team-high 22 digs, and Sam Rowen had 17 digs.
“The energy in the gym was amazing,” Lynch said. “It was phenomenal. The jayvee team won also in three, and they set the tone for us.
“Honestly, we’re playing as a team. That’s the key word. When we play well and play as a team and those kids have a right mindset, it’s tough to beat us.”
Pennsbury coach Michael Falter tipped his hat to the Indians.
“They played a great match both offensively and defensively – very efficient with few errors,” the Falcons’ coach said. “Unfortunately, we did not show up to play tonight, which is extremely odd to me since it’s always a great match.
“We were missing our senior starting middle, who was in a car accident and is out for the season – I’m not sure if it would have made a difference with how many errors we had, but she is a vocal leader on the team, and we missed that tonight. There is still a lot of season left, so hopefully we can use tonight as a lesson.”
Thursday’s win avenged an early season loss to the Falcons (3-2). Two days earlier, Rock North avenged a loss to Williams Tennent with a 3-1 win.
“Hopefully, we’re on a roll,” Lynch said. “Truthfully, some of the losses we have are not because we didn’t have the physical skills or ability to beat the teams we lost to.
“It was because we had huge mental lapses where three, four, five, six points would go by, and we’d dig ourselves in a hole. I think the kids are learning to be more mentally tough and are trusting each other. We have to learn to continue to roll and not let other teams get back in when we’re ahead by three or four points. Tonight was an overall team effort.”
