PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 54, WISSAHICKON 35
The Colonials led 12-8 after one quarter and then seized control of the game with a 14-1 second quarter tear to go into halftime on top 26-9. The Trojans never threatened.
“The first quarter was back and forth,” PW coach Daniel Dougherty said. “Wissahickon had a huge size advantage on us, and in the second quarter, Lauren Coscia came off the bench and provided us with an inside presence and was able to slow their inside game down.
“Then Alynna Williams took over the game. Alynna Williams and Taylor O’Brien both had really good second and third quarters. We held them to one point in the second quarter and four points in the third quarter.”
The Colonials’ defense turned a 12-8 lead after one quarter into a 42-13 lead after three frames.
“It was Alynna Williams’ defense and Lauren Coscia’s defense and offense,” Dougherty said of the Colonials’ dominance in the second and third quarters. “Lauren was able to give us an inside presence, and once they collapsed their zone, we were able to hit some three’s over top of it.”
Williams led a balanced attack with 14 points while O’Brien added 11. Coscia and Ali Diamond both had seven points for the Colonials, who connected on 14-of-14 shots from the free throw line.
“Taylor O’Brien really played well,” Dougherty said of his freshman guard. “She was able to get to the basket.”
For the Trojans, senior Alisha Kelly led the way with 16 points.
“She played really well for them,” Dougherty said.

PENNSBURY 37, BENSALEM 35 (Thursday, Dec. 18)
The Falcons found themselves staring at a 22-13 halftime deficit but outscored the Owls 11-2 in the third quarter to knot things up 24-24, setting the stage for the dramatic finish.
What changed in the second half?
“My assistant coach, Dave Schwind, gave a very inspiring speech, and I think it really ignited a flame under the girls,” coach Keith Gabor said. “They came out, and they played probably their best quarter of the season so far.
“We went on an 11-2 run. He challenged them on a level of offensive production and playing defense, and they really responded well to that.”
A key to the Falcons’ comeback was their defensive effort.
“They have a really good player in Lyric Lewis – she is just tough,” Gabor said. “We knew the ball was going to go to her, and what we were doing was trying to funnel everything to the middle and Sarah (Atunarse) finished with seven blocks.
“Most of that damage was done at the end of the third and the beginning of the fourth. I told Sarah that I thought she played the best quarter of her high school career in that third quarter.”
Despite their spirited comeback, the Falcons still trailed by three with a minute remaining.
“We had the ball underneath our basket, and we ran a play and found Amy Blazejewski wide open for a three off the inbounds, and she knocks it down – tie game,” Gabor said. “Bensalem had the ball with 29 seconds left. We figured they would hold for one, but their kid took a shot and we get the rebound.
“We called a timeout, ran some time off the clock and ran a play. Maggie Kane was fouled. She knocked down the front end of a one-and-one. The second one bounced out, and Sarah Atunarse gets the rebound and kicked it out.”
Kane was fouled again and made the front end of a one-and-one to ice the win.
“To be down nine with this group that we’re trying to bring along, trying to develop – I was really proud of them and how they took coach Schwind’s message, and they took it personally and ran with it,” Gabor said. “They came together as a team and played really hard.”
Kane led the Falcons with 12 points while Niasia Boone added eight. Blazejewski and Atunarse both had six points.
“Abby Wick is another name that stands out,” Gabor said. “She stepped in – she’s a floor general, and she had a great game. Niasa Boone had a great game. I told them at the end of the game it was a team effort. Hopefully, we will build on this.”
Pennsbury (2-4, 1-2 SOL) will host Harry S Truman on Tuesday while the Owls will travel to Abington on Monday.
