NORTH PENN 64, LANSDALE CATHOLIC 62
Any shooting woes the Crusaders may have had were forgotten in a hurry during a first half that saw LC score 38 points – which included a 23-point second quarter – on its way to a 38-27 halftime lead over the host Knights.
“We seem to have a way of bringing teams of their shooting slumps,” coach John Conrad said. “(Coach) Chris (Podsobinski) had them exceptionally well prepared. They just played with tremendous passion, made good decisions, and they did shoot very well.
“They really outhustled us, and they outplayed us. We were very fortunate to come out with a win. It was a good atmosphere. There was a good crowd. Both teams played hard.”
Down but not out, the Knights rebounded with a strong second half, outscoring the Crusaders 21-11 in the third quarter to trail by just one heading into the final quarter (49-48). The Knights went on to outscore LC 16-13 in the fourth to eke out the win.
“Our kids didn’t let up,” Conrad said. “We were down 11, and as a staff, we kept saying, ‘They can’t keep shooting like this,’ but they did for most of the game.
“In the past, we might have found a way to lose that game, but I was proud of them because we found a way to win it despite not playing exceptionally well.”
Cordell Lord led the Knights with 16 points, and Joe Richards added 15. Jared Melone had 13 points, and Kyle Hulmes, 12 points.
“We got pretty good scoring from our seniors, and it was pretty balanced,” Conrad said. “The biggest thing – defensively, we switched assignments, and Kyle Hulmes did a nice job on their number 30. He was catching the ball on the high post and the low post and scoring. Kyle did a real nice job and made it difficult for him to catch the ball in the post.
“Melone is just a competitor. I’m grateful he decided to play this year because he’s just tough. He makes the tough basket, he gets the tough rebound. He just helped carry us.”
With the win, the Knights evened their record at 4-4 (2-1 SOL).
