HARRY S TRUMAN 49, WISSAHICKON 46
The Tigers sprinted out of the gate to a 20-13 lead at the end of one quarter and took a 29-24 lead into halftime in Friday’s opening round of the Wissahickon Holiday Tournament.
“We fullcourt pressed and then fell back into the 3-2, and it was just aggressive, we moved fast and we were able to score,” Truman coach Collette Munford said of her team’s strong start. “The second quarter was still the same, but our shot selection started getting off, and we weren’t boxing out as much.
“That’s where that young mentality comes in – we’re winning, we start throwing up garbage and getting lazy. We had the pep talk at halftime, which I thought would have worked, and we come out and score two points in the whole (third) quarter.”
The Trojans outscored the Tigers 11-2 in the third quarter to go into the final quarter with a 35-32 lead, but the Tigers staged a late rally to eke out the win.
“I was doing a lot of subbing,” Munford said. “My bigs got into a lot of foul trouble, and I had to sit them.”
Leading the offensive charge for the Tigers were a trio of young players. Sophomore Jayda Campbell led a balanced attack with 12 points while freshman Darnella McMillan added 11 points and sophomore Daeja Moore had 10 points. Sabria Lytes had six points.
“I’m pleased for the most part,” Munford said. “Out of all the games we’ve played, we should have won more than we have. The reason why we lost is because of us – we shoot ourselves in the foot.
“It’s our foul shots, it’s not boxing out and (missing) our putback layups. I don’t know how many easy layups we missed because they still go full speed. They don’t know how to downshift. I’m talking about a young group here, so I’m teaching them how to downshift like you’re driving a stick shift. You can’t go from one end to the other still doing 100. You have to downshift two gears and lay it up.
“It’s those things that are shooting us in the foot. I tell them and they know it – layups and foul shots, and that’s what is killing us.”
Alisha Kelly led the Trojans with 12 points while Daria Earland added 10 and Brittany Gelman, nine points. Lexi Carradorini had seven.
While Wissahickon (1-7) will face Souderton in Saturday’s consolation game at 12 noon, the Tigers (4-5) will face Perkiomen Valley in the title game at 3 p.m.
“I told them before the game today, ‘It’s a holiday tournament, and at the end of the day, it’s basketball. Go have fun and play the game,’ and they did,” Munford said. “It got ugly in the third quarter, but they pulled it out.”
