COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 52, ST. MARK’S (DEL) 30
Shannon Taub – best known for her exploits in track and field – had herself quite a day on the hardwood on Sunday. The senior forward, who earned tournament MVP honors, scored 23 points and also had three steals and four assists to lead the Golden Hawks to the title of the Diamond State Classic.
“She’s a track kid, but she’s so athletic,” coach Monica Stolic said of Taub.
Twin sister Allison also had a big day, contributing 14 points, 14 rebounds, six assists and four steals while Payton Spadaccino added seven points, seven assists and four rebounds.
When it was over, it was hard to believe that the Golden Hawks actually spotted St. Mark’s a 6-0 lead to open the game. The Golden Hawks rebounded from their slow start to outscore St. Mark’s 14-4 the rest of the quarter. They took a 21-14 lead into halftime and then held a 13-10 advantage in the third quarter. Shannon Taub scored 12 points in the frame. The Hawks closed it out with an 18-6 fourth quarter.
“We didn’t start out too well,” Stolic said. “We have to play all four quarters.
“I think our defense was pretty good, holding them to 30 points.”
Spadaccino earned the tournament’s sportsmanship/dedication award.
The Golden Hawks closed out a successful month of December with a 6-2 record – a marked contrast to last December’s 2-5 mark.
“Looking where we were last year this time – we had two wins,” Stolic said. “We’re working hard every day, and we’re taking one game at a time.
“We have a tough week next week – we have four games.”

NESHAMINY 37, GREAT VALLEY 33
The Redskins staged a late game rally to earn a come-from-behind win in Sunday’s opening round of the Boardwalk Classic in Wildwood.
“We definitely didn’t play our best game,” coach Joe Lally said. “It was a little bit sloppy, but we’ll take it.”
The ‘Skins used a 15-6 fourth quarter outburst to erase a five-point deficit entering the frame. Sparking the comeback were Maddie Murray, Devon Storms and Morgan Goldenbaum.
Storms connected on 3-of-4 from the foul line in the final 31 seconds of regulation. She buried one-of-two to put the ‘Skins on top 35-33 with 31 seconds remaining and then sank two-of-two with six seconds left to ice the win.
The Redskins took a 34-33 lead when Murray – who had six points in the quarter – connected on a pair from the foul line with 2:47 remaining.
“Maddie did a better job of getting to the basket and getting to the foul line in the fourth quarter,” Lally said. “That really made a big difference, and it just shows how she has matured as a player.
“Her shots weren’t falling, but she’s not a one-dimensional kid. She found a way to get to the line, and she’s a very good free throw shooter, and that helped us a lot in the fourth quarter.”
Neither team scored again until Storms’ foul shots in the closing minute.
Earlier in the quarter, the Redskins – who trailed 27-22 after three quarters – received a pair of field goals from Goldenbaum while Murray and Storms both had one field goal.
Murray led the team with 12 points and seven rebounds while Goldenbaum added 11 points and five rebounds and Storms had 10 points.
Early on, the Redskins led 10-9 after one quarter but then endured a three-point second quarter and found themselves trailing 20-13 at the intermission. They outscored the Patriots 9-7 in the third quarter, setting the stage for their fourth quarter comeback.
The Redskins (5-2) will face Middle Township in the championship game of the Ray Martin Memorial Bracket on Monday at 5:30 p.m.
