WILLIAM TENNENT 66, PALISADES 52
The Panthers survived a shaky start to turn in a glittering second half performance, scoring 46 points after the intermission to seize complete control of a game they trailed by 10 in the opening moments of the second quarter and capturing the title of the Quakertown Holiday Tournament.
Senior captain Angie Pomponio led the way with an impressive 23-point performance, and sophomore Kyla Gibson added 20. The duo combined for 30 points in the second half when the Panthers turned up the tempo of the game several notches, fast breaking off missed Palisades’ shots and also scoring some easy buckets at the end of the Pirates’ press.
“It was a fight we needed to win,” said coach Paul Veltre, whose team fell to Palisades in an opening round game last year. “I’m really proud of them.”
Another key to the game was the Panthers ability to contain – for a 15-minute period – Karlee Krchnavi. The junior star scored 16 points in the opening nine minutes of the game to propel the Pirates to a 20-10 lead in the opening moments of the second quarter.
She didn’t score again before halftime, and the Panthers had trimmed the Pirates’ lead to 23-20.
The second half belonged to Tennent.
Back-to-back three-pointers by Pomponio and Gibson put the Panthers on top 26-23. Krchnavi answered with a trey of her own to knot the score, and a pair of Lizzie Sessinger foul shots gave the Pirates a 28-26 lead.
A three-point play by Gibson was followed by a fastbreak basket by Alyssa Christiansen off a Pirate miss, and the Panthers led 31-28. Gibson came up with a long rebound off a Panther miss and scored to put her team on top 33-28.
By the end of the quarter, the Panthers led 45-34, and they weren’t finished yet, opening up a 52-36 lead after a bucket Sarah Richie with five minutes remaining in regulation to cap a 26-8 run in an impressive eight-minute span.
“A few defensive matchups got switched,” Pomponio said of her team’s turnaround.
“We broke their press easily over the top,” added Gibson. “And we just made our layups.”
Krchnavi led all scorers with 31 points with 10 of those coming in the fourth quarter when the Panthers were in command.
“She’s good,” Veltre said. “She’s a fantastic player. I’d love to have an opportunity to coach her. She does a lot of things very, very well. I have to tip my hat to her. She’s the real deal.”
Braylin Dougherty added nine points for the Panthers, who upped their record to 6-4 heading into the New Year.
“I think we’re going to have a whole new level of confidence,” Pomponio said. “Our team is just going to keep on getting better from here on.”
Pomponio went down hard at the 6:33 mark of the third quarter. She watched from the sidelines for several minutes before re-entering the game and providing a stabilizing force down the stretch.
“The (trainer) said I could go back in if I wanted to or sit out, but I wanted to go back in,” Pomponio said. “A close game like that – I can’t sit out.”
The senior point guard buried 11-of-13 shots from the foul line, 7-of-9 in the fourth quarter. For the game, the Panthers connected on 22-of-30 foul shots. The two teams combined for 52 foul shots. The Pirates were 13-for-22 from the line.

UPPER MERION 47, WILDWOOD 36
The Vikings captured the title of the Kaitlin Anzelone Bracket at the Boardwalk Classic in Wildwood.
Regie Robinson led all scorers with 28 points and needs just one point to reach the coveted 1,000-point plateau for her career.
“It was about 1:30 left, and we had just put (our lead) back to double digits,” coach Tom Schurtz said. “They were all playing well, but she was a dominant part of our scoring.
“I called timeout and asked her, ‘You need to know – you’re at 999. What do you want to do?’ She said, ‘I want to wait until we’re at home.’ She chose to leave it at 999 because her parents weren’t here and her family wasn’t here, but her first thought was to be sure we took care of the game and put it away first.”
Robinson also pulled down 16 rebounds in a dominant effort, collecting her fifth double-double in as many games. Tatiana Pleasant added 12 rebounds in a game that saw the Vikings hold a lopsided 48-32 advantage under the boards.
Eryn Brady added seven points while Jessica Michael had six for the Vikings, who found themselves deadlocked 6-6 after one quarter. The Vikings followed that with a 17-point second quarter to go into halftime with a 23-18 lead.
“We had a slow start,” Schurtz said. “It was sort of a methodical early part of the game.
“I think the second quarter was really the turning point because it changed from a halfcourt slow, methodical pace, and then we up-tempoed everything. If we could have made it a fullcourt game for four quarters, they would have had a difficult time scoring enough points to stay with us.
“We changed our defensive style and made it a fullcourt game. That allowed us to isolate the low block a little bit, score in transition and score in bunches. We did a really nice job with our pressure defense today.”
The Vikings added to their lead in the second half, outscoring Wildwood 13-11 in the third quarter and 24-18 in the half.
“We’re getting a lot of players involved,” Schurtz said. “It’s nice to get out with two wins.”

The Redskins used a strong defensive effort to defeat Middle Township in the title game of the Ray Martin Memorial Bracket of the Boardwalk Classic in Wildwood. Middle Township, which trailed 22-15 at halftime, scored just 10 points in the second half.
“We gave up 15 points in the first half, and our focus was to give up less than 15 in the second half, and we gave up 10,” coach Joe Lally said. “They’re a good perimeter shooting team with slashers/cutters.
“We defended really well. It was a good challenge. They were a good team.”
Sophomore Devon Storms had 15 points and nine rebounds to lead the ‘Skins.
“Devon is really starting to step up,” Lally said. “She’s going to help take a lot of pressure off of Maddie (Murray) and Morgan (Goldenbaum).
“She’s played three or four really solid consecutive games now on both ends of the floor, so we’re really happy with her play. We’re hoping that she’s starting to hit her stride and peak to her potential.”
Goldenbaum added eight points while Murray and Tiara Porterfield both had six points.

Alynna Williams matched Hickson’s efforts at both ends of the court with a stellar showing of her own, finishing with 20 points, four rebounds and three assists.
Taylor O’Brien added 12 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals, and Lauren Coscia had 10 points as four Colonials finished the game in double figures.
“It was an all-around team effort,” coach Daniel Dougherty said.
The Colonials took the suspense out of this one early, opening up an 18-8 lead after one quarter and stretching that to 40-12 by halftime on their way to the big win.
The Colonials (5-2, 3-1 SOL) will face West Chester East in Tuesday’s title game at Colonial Elementary School (7:30 p.m.).
QUAKERTOWN 41, UPPER PERKIOMEN 36
The Panthers trailed the Tribe 17-15 at halftime of Monday’s consolation game but outscored their visitors 16-9 in the third quarter to earn the much-needed win.
“It’s just a confidence builder,” coach Brittany Remmey said. “Tonight they were doing the little things.
“They were boxing out, communicating on defense, taking the right shots. It was really fun to watch them play like a team, and it was an all-around effort from every single player on the bench and on the floor.
“That’s a tribute to them, not to me. That’s them digging down deep and saying – this is how we have to play to win.”
Senior Meghan Klee led the Panthers with 11 points while Brooke Alwine added seven. Spenser Gray and Jill Martin both had six points.
In the pivotal third quarter, Alwine had five points, which included a three-pointer while both Klee and Martin had two buckets. Marina Cooke had three points for the Panthers (2-8).
“My upperclassmen stepped up and were leaders outside of here,” said Remmey of Alwine, Klee, Makenna Kressley and Gray. “They got the girls together and talked to them. I think they really responded well to them.
“It was similar to what we used to have at (Central Bucks) West when we started over with them. Just a couple of upperclassmen getting together and saying, ‘Enough’s enough. We want to make this a different year.’ They needed this win really badly.”

The second half was another story entirely as the Spartans limited the Golden Bears to just five points in both the third and fourth quarters, outscoring their conference rival 25-10.
“The girls were playing strong defense, and it was basically working,” coach Bill Krewson said. “Our shot selection in the first half was not bad, but they just weren’t dropping. We started our second half and just said, ‘Get a basket.’”
Molly Dugan had a huge game to lead the Spartans with 23 points while Bailey Krewson and Jewell Ringgold both added seven. Maura Ryan had six points.
For the Golden Bears, Julia Gatto led the way with eight points while Jenna Getz had seven and Emily Zanine, six points.

CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 53, NOTRE DAME 29
Coach Beth Mattern was concerned after her team put a 43-24 beating on Notre Dame in the title game of the Springfield-Delco Tournament to open the season, knowing the two teams would meet again.
She needn’t have worried.
Twenty-three days after manhandling the Leprechauns, the Titans turned in an even more impressive showing in Monday’s opening round of the Downingtown West Holiday Classic.
Jordan Vitelli continued to have the hot hand for the Titans, leading the way with a 16-point effort that included five three-pointers. Taylor Dunn added 10 points while Emma Gardy and Haley Meinel both chipped in with six points.
The Titans led 10-9 after one quarter but then put a hurting on the Leprechauns with an 18-5 second quarter explosion to go into halftime with a 28-14 lead.
“In the second quarter, we really clamped down on defense, controlled the boards and finished offensively,” coach Beth Mattern said.
The Titans (7-1, 4-0 SOL) outscored the Leprechauns 23-15 to close it out, coasting to the convincing win. They will face Downingtown West in Tuesday’s title game at 6:30 p.m.

CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 42, LIBERTY 31
The Patriots got off to a slow start in Monday’s opening round game at the Unionville Tournament and found themselves staring at the short end of a 14-5 score after one quarter. They recuperated quite nicely from that sluggish start, outscoring Liberty 37-17 the rest of the way.
“We gave up 14 points in the first quarter and then we gave up 17 the rest of the way,” coach Liz Potash said. “We switched up our defense in the second quarter, and it was working, so we stayed with it the rest of the game.
“That was kind of the story – switching up the ‘D,’ and the girls were executing it.”
The Patriots trailed by nine after one quarter but outscored Liberty 10-3 in the second to go into the intermission trailing by just two (17-15). The Patriots took a 30-23 lead into the final quarter when they outscored Liberty 12-8.
“It was a rough first quarter – we turned the ball over a lot on top of not scoring, but the girls did a great job of mentally staying in the game and getting ourselves back in it,” Potash said. “In the fourth quarter, they got to within five or six, and we had a couple of turnovers.
“We called a timeout and got ourselves regrouped. I thought there was a really good resiliency tonight, and I think it’s showing some of the growth with our team that we’re able to bounce back from some of those things.”
Bridget Birkhead (12 points) and Grace Stewart (11) both finished in double figures while Kyra Scaliti added eight points, but this was a team effort.
“We played nine girls tonight, and we were really happy with the production from all nine,” Potash said. “Everyone that came in was able to do some things.
“Abby Charlton came off the bench, and she was aggressive going after the ball and had a couple of points from the foul line. Amanda Conley came in and did a nice job, got a steal right off the bat. It was an all-out team effort.”
Defense also was a key to the Patriots’ strong showing.
“They have two good shooters, and they were kind of our focus, and we held them to four points total,” Potash said. “The one shooter had four, and they were both in the first quarter, and their other scorer didn’t score at all. We kept her off the boards. The defense really did a great job holding them off.
“Bridget hit some nice shots in the second half that kind of put us up. We just did a nice job executing after that first quarter. They did a nice job rebounding back because that could have gone downhill kind of quick.”
The Patriots (5-5, 2-2 SOL) will face Red Lion in Tuesday’s title game at 6 p.m.
