ABINGTON 3, COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 2 (8 innings)
A perfectly-executed suicide squeeze by Nick Torba in the bottom of the eighth inning propelled the Ghosts to the dramatic walk-off win.
Brian Close led off the eighth with a single. A walk put Ghost runners on first and second, and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. On the very next pitch, Torba’s squeeze brought Close home with the game winner.
“Nick Torba is a senior co-captain, which was an awesome thing for our program and for us,” coach Dave Torresani said of Torba’s eighth inning heroics. “He’s a great kid, and he’s doing a great job as a leader. For him to have that moment is pretty awesome.”
Junior Cole Henrie – in his first start – threw six strong innings, allowing three hits and two runs while walking one and striking out one. Conor Breslin threw two shutout innings to earn the win, allowing two hits.
“Cole Henrie was just fabulous,” Torresani said. “He kept the ball down and got a lot of ground balls and some weak popups.
“I will say this – some of the ground balls were hit hard, but we made all the plays. Our defense overall was just great. I think that helped Cole out a lot.
“Breslin came in, and he’s another ground ball pitcher, and he got a huge double play ground ball in the top of the eighth to get us out of a possible jam. I think that was the key to success today – the pitchers keeping the ball down and not letting their big hitters get the ball in the air.
“Cole made one mistake, and that was on Cole German’s triple, but other than that, he kept the ball where we could field it.”
Leading the Ghosts offensively were Aidan Coyle (2-for-2, 1 run), Close (2-for-4, 1 run) and Nick Bein (1-for-3, RBI).
The Indians took a 2-0 lead in the fourth, and that lead stood until the Ghosts tied it up in the bottom of the sixth, setting the stage for extra innings.
‘They got up 2-0, and one of the things I found with this team – they’re definitely going to battle to the end, and they did,” Torresani said. “We scored two in the bottom of the sixth to tie it and then got the winning run.”
Abington is 5-4 in league play (8-5 overall) while Council Rock North is 6-4 in the league (6-6 overall).
