COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 3, HATBORO-HORSHAM 1
The wind proved to be an ally of the Golden Hawks in Tuesday’s non-league contest. Trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Hawks reeled off three unanswered goals in the second half to earn the come-from-behind win.
“We were against the wind in the first half, and we just had a difficult time just managing the tempo of the game, just trying to knock the ball around and use the field,” coach Alan Nicholl said. “The wind has an awful lot to say.
“I told them at halftime – being down a goal, I thought we were in pretty good shape. I said, ‘Hey, let’s use the wind to our advantage now and try to play with a little more direction, with a little more authority with the ball,’ and we did exactly that. We had more chances on goal, we were more dangerous in the second half.”
Kevin Bowers connected for a pair of goals and Michael Dawicki added a single goal. Conor Sweeney had a pair of helpers and Reid Czapor had one.
“We looked more dangerous in the second half,” Nicholl said. “I told them, ‘Guys, we played a little bit on our heels in the first half. Let’s go out and see if we can get double digit shots.’”
The Golden Hawks’ coach credited Dawicki and Czapor in the center of the field for leading the charge.
“It’s such a pivotal position, being able to dictate the pace of play and being able to manufacture some type of offense,” Nicholl said. “They’re both seniors, they’re both captains, and they’re both experienced.
“You start to see that as the game wears on. They knew before the whistle even blew that it was going to be a different half, so they were trying to start on the front foot and really see if we could get at Hatboro a little bit and turn it around, and they did.”
Rock South keeper Nolan Gaudet had five saves in tricky windy conditions.
With the win, the Golden Hawks upped their record to 2-0.
“The Suburban One is so competitive, and to get a couple of non-league wins under your belt will be invaluable at the end of the season we hope,” Nicholl said. “Hatboro will get some wins this year.”
Council Rock South (2-0) will host Abington in its SOL opener on Wednesday, and Hatboro-Horsham will be on the road at Springfield Township.
