UPPER DUBLIN 60, SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP 24
Any concerns coach Morgan Funsten may have had after watching his team score just five points in the second half of its loss to Abington in the title game of its own holiday tournament went out the window for one day at least.
The Cardinals, who led 13-5 after one quarter, took a 23-16 lead into halftime and then exploded for 37 second-half points. Sixteen of those came in a third quarter that saw the Cards outscore the Spartans 16-0.
Josie Barrett led a balanced Cardinal attack with 14 points, which included three three-pointers. She also had four rebounds and three steals. Freshman Jackie Vargas had a big night, finishing with 11 points, seven rebounds and two blocks. Nicole Kaiser contributed 11 points and six rebounds while Maggie Weglos had seven points, six rebounds, six assists and three steals. Kara Grebe added six points, six rebounds and four blocks, and Lindsey Schreiber had seven points and two steals.
Senior Molly Dugan led the Spartans with 13 points while Grace Barraclough had six.

Payton Spadaccino scored a game high 16 points – which included a 12-for-15 effort at the foul line – to lead the Golden Hawks to the non-league win. Spadaccino was 4-for-4 from the charity stripe in the first two quarters, but it was her 8-for-11 effort in the fourth quarter that sealed the visiting Rams’ fate.
“Payton was terrific,” Rock South coach Jason Rapp said. “She handled their man-to-man pressure and got after it defensively. It starts with her.”
The Rams – behind seven points from Rose McCormick – opened up a 10-6 lead after one quarter and took a 16-14 advantage into halftime. The Golden Hawks turned up the defensive pressure in the second half and kept the Rams off the scoreboard in the third quarter, outscoring their visitors 9-0 to go on top 23-16. Spadaccino scored all of her team’s points in a final quarter that saw both teams score 13.
“We did a great job in the second half as a team defending and rebounding,” said Rapp, crediting Kasey Schlupp for her defensive effort against Brooke Bachtle.
In addition to Spadaccino, Faith Turner contributed nine points.
For the Lady Rams, McCormick led the way with eight points while Emilee Cramer added seven.
