PENNRIDGE 15, CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 7
While neither team could win an SOL Continental title and both were firmly in the district playoffs, the Rams and Titans had plenty to play for on Wednesday.
Separated by just two spots in the District One Class 3A standings, the winner would get critical points and a more favorable second round path. The Titans started the game holding the No. 9 spot while the Rams were No. 11 but once things ended, Pennridge had jumped to ninth and CB South was in 12th.
"We came out and played a complete game, offensively in transition we made the one extra look and defensively, we were solid and tough and tough in the net," Pennridge coach JP Banks said. "It helps a lot when PJ Matkowski is dominating at the 'X'. It's a special night being Senior Night and all our seniors came out strong."
Pennridge started hot and never really slowed down. Matkowski controlled the faceoff differential for most of the night and the Rams turned his effort into a flurry of first half goals. Ball movement was also a big part of the Pennridge effort, as the Rams chalked up assists on 11 of their goals.
The story of the first half offensively was Kevin Britner. In a stretch spanning a bit more than 90 seconds, the junior tallied a first quarter natural hat trick and finished the opening half with five goals.
"He did a great job of getting into advantageous spots," Banks said. "He caught the ball and finished quickly and well and I thought there were guys looking for him. It was a really unselfish effort by everybody."
Pennridge's defense was also excellent, holding CB South scoreless for more than 11 minutes to close the first half and the entire 12 minutes of the third quarter. Tristan Banks made five saves and his defenders put in a strong shift against the Titans' potent attackmen.
Brandon Howell, Andy Kelly, Jonnie Banks and Danny Hart all had turns making plays on the back end for the Rams.
"Brandon Howell did a phenomenal job of limiting their options with their best guy down there," JP Banks said. "Tristan, when they did get a breakdown and a shot, he came up with the saves."
CB South was led by hat tricks from Donte Poli and Austin Novick with Dylan Grosso netting the other goal. Poli, Novick and Logan Swangler each had an assist. Bobby Saunter stopped five shots in goal for the Titans, and Colin Bernstein had a pair of saves.
Nick Fanelli helped pick up the scoring in the second half for Pennridge, totalling five goals in the game while Logan Lazasz had a goal and three assists, Ryan Garner had two goals and three assists and Jack Garner scored two and helped out on four more for the Rams. Tristan Banks recorded 13 saves in goal and Austin Swartley had a pair.
Many of the Pennridge players were on the field in significant roles during last season's two-game stay in districts and the Rams now head into next week's postseason having put together one of their best performances of the season.
"We're two teams with even records, we're right next to each other in the standings," Banks said. "For us, it's been a good year. We've had our setbacks, we lost four games by a total of five goals so for us to come out against a quality opponent and put together a complete performance, I'm really proud of the boys but hope they won't rest on this."
Also for the Titans, Poli led the team with eight ground balls while Matt Stoll scooped up seven. Colin Abbonizio had five, and Joe DeLaurentis, Matt McDonald and Alex Johnson each grabbed two. Contributing one ground ball each were Evan Quinn, Christian Manibo, Dylan Cramm, Connor Falkowski, Tyler Horvath and Sautner. Poli was credited with three forced turnovers and Stoll had one. Horvath went 8 for 14 at the X and Stoll was 3-for-11.
