The Flying Cardinals couldn’t have written a better script for their 10th annual Corners for Cancer game.
Not only was the weather perfect for the Flying Cardinals’ shutout win, they also raised a record $13,000 to fight cancer. The Cardinals raised $5,000 on the raffle baskets at Saturday’s game, they already have raised $5,600 on the web site set up to accept donations, and they raised an additional $2,100 with their car wash and two can collections with funds still coming in.
“This is hands down the best one ever,” coach Heather Boyer said. “We had two years over the $10,000 mark, but this year they crushed it.”
The Cardinals’ coach credited the enthusiasm of her squad as key in this year’s success.
“The kids went out and they used connections,” Boyer said. “They planned appropriately, they got it done early, and we could advertise it on social media.
“It was enthusiasm by the senior leadership, that willingness to go the extra mile and put in the extra effort, and our school district did a really nice job of promoting it this year.
“Also, just the tradition – this is the 10th year. It started as a little grass roots opportunity 10 years ago when we were trying to do something meaningful. It’s just gotten better and better each year.”
For the third consecuctive year, the event was organized and implemented as the Culminating Project for the team’s seniors: Madeleine Casey, Allison Chang, Lauren Greene, Ryann Kullmann, Meghan Muth, Emma Kate Powell, Jamie Rock, Izzy Simmons and Steph Zajec.
“The seniors have taken it and run with it, which is super helpful, so they were the catalysts,” Boyer said. “The underclassmen really rallied around them too.
“There are freshmen that raised $500 or $600, so it wasn’t just the seniors. There were some younger kids that rallied around it and got excited, which was really cool.”
Topping off the day, the Flying Cardinals took care of business on the field as well, opening up a 3-0 halftime lead on their way to the convincing win over the Golden Bears.
Ryann Kullmann (Madeleine Casey assist) scored just over nine minutes into the contest, and with 10:30 remaining in the half, Lauren Greene scored with a Lydia Casey assist. Two minutes later, Allie Rock scored with a Kullmann assist. Kullmann – who led the Cardinals with two goals and an assist – scored the only goal of the second half, using a Casey assist.
Meghan Muth turned away three shots in the shutout win for the Cardinals, who held an advantage in shots (14-3) and corners (11-4).
UM goalie Bella Guarenghi recorded eight saves.

NESHAMINY 2, CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 1
The Redskins – 5-0 in conference play – were looking for a non-league win after dropping their first three games out of the conference. They got what they were looking for on Saturday.
“Today was a great win,” coach Jamie Pinto said. “We were telling the girls – we’re playing these non-league games, and we’re playing really good teams. We’re close, we’re hanging, we’re right there, but we’re just not winning. We needed to get a good non-league win, and today we were able to pull it out.
“CB South is a good aggressive team, and it was a hard-fought game.”
The Redskins wasted little time before getting on the board. Kayla Connelly spotted the ‘Skins an early 1-0 lead when she scored with an assist from Dylan Beegal less than three minutes into the contest. The Titans knotted the score at the 18:08 mark of the half when Ashley Timby found the back of the cage, using a Casey Reilly assist.
With just under seven minutes remaining in the opening half, Nancy Lin deflected a cross from Jamie Pennington into the cage for the go-ahead goal and a 2-1 halftime lead that stood until the final whistle.
“We play hard – we fought back,” Pinto said. “They came back and tied it up. We kept fighting and got that second goal. From then on, we just had to keep playing hard as a team. I think that’s something we’re really going to focus on and keep working towards. The second half of our season starts on Wednesday, and we need to make sure we’re going to continue to win the rest of our league games as well.”
The Titans, according to Pinto, did not go down without a fight and held an advantage in both shots (10-8) and corners (7-2).
“The whole second half was back and forth,” the Redskins’ coach said. “They did not give up. The last five minutes of the game we were playing defense. Our defenders Brooke Cordisco and Sophie Schardt and our goalie Maddie Tiemann – they all did a very good job of stepping up and playing smart. We knew South wasn’t going to back down. The last five minutes we were back on our heels a little bit, but we were able to pull it out.”
Neshaminy goalie Maddie Tiemann was credited with five saves in the win, and South’s Jillian Heilig also had five saves.
“(We) started a little flat, and Neshaminy came out strong, scoring in the first five minutes,” South coach Pat Toner said. “Despite outshooting (7-0) and out-cornering (5-0) Neshaminy in the second half, (we) could not break through Neshaminy’s strong defense to tie the game.”
Neshaminy (6-3, 5-0 SOL) will travel to Pennsbury on Monday.
“We are working hard and playing together as a team, and we hope to continue to play strong the second half of our season,” Pinto said.
Central Bucks South (5-4, 3-2) will be on the road at Council Rock North for a non-league game Monday.
