CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 2, CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 1 (OT)
In the day’s most dramatic contest, it was the Patriots edging their neighboring rival in overtime when Cailey Lever turned a Phia Mannino pass during corner play into a goal.
“It definitely was an exciting game,” coach Meghann Spratt said. “They came out and gave us a big fight, and we came away with the win, which was great.
“A sister school – as I said this past week against West – you can never walk through a sister school. The pride and the competitive level are always raised, no matter anybody’s record.”
The two teams exchanged goals in regulation. Mannino scored with a Lever assist with 18:36 remaining in the second half. Casey Reilly connected on an unassisted goal with 7:31 remaining to knot the score, setting the stage for overtime.
“I was super confident in my 7v7 crew, and I always have been,” said Spratt.
Spratt’s confidence turned out to be well founded. Lever scored the game-winner with 8:31 remaining in the overtime period.
“All my forwards did very well – we just couldn’t find the net, but we came away with the victory, and that’s all that matters,” Spratt said. “I think the frustration was that they had all 10 players packed in my 20 and the circle. That was basically the entire game. I said to beat that we had to draw corners, and that’s how we won the game, so ultimately, we were rewarded by drawing our corners and taking advantage of that.”
Earning player of the game honors for East was a player – Emma Donnelly – who did not show up in the scoring line.
“Emma Donnelly played extremely well,” Spratt said. “It was probably the best game I have ever seen her play. Aside from the physical play, her mental toughness was amazing. She was literally smashed in the face with a stick and was forced to come off the field and came back even stronger. She was the best player on the field today.
“I also think Grace Bethke played tremendous defense. She was like a brick wall, and Elizabeth Philipp played very strong as well.”
South goalie Jillian Heilig recorded eight saves. Annie Brady, Anna Gillard and Sofia Sonnet each had a defensive save for the Patriots.
“This was a great test for us since they are currently ranked number one in our district,” South coach Pat Toner said. “It’s always difficult to lose, but I have been telling them they are capable of playing with anyone when they play as a team and today proved that.”
East goalie Emily Bullard recorded one save in the win.
While the Patriots remain the top seed in the latest District One 3A rankings, the Titans are the 15th seed.
Central Bucks East (11-0, 8-0 SOL) will face Methacton in a non-league contest on Saturday, and Central Bucks South (6-5-1, 4-3-1) will travel to Upper Dublin on Monday.
