SOL Colonial Division
PENNRIDGE 50, NORTH PENN 45
The visiting Rams – on the short end of a 39-38 score heading into the fourth quarter – closed out Wednesday’s game with a 12-8 frame to earn their first conference win of the season.
“We needed it – it’s been tough,” Pennridge coach Mike Elton said. “They’ve been really working hard in practice, and they’ve kept a great attitude. This is really a great bunch of kids to coach.
“They’re young, and I think you’re starting to see some of the things they’ve been working on. It was a great team effort from our standpoint. North Penn does a nice job. They kept the intensity up.”
Sophomore Katie Yoder had a big night for the Rams, leading all scorers with 19 points, which included two 3-pointers and a 7-for-10 effort at the foul line.
“It was really nice to see her have a good (offensive) game,” Elton said. “She’s struggled a little bit, and I think some of that is she’s been tasked with defending some of the bigger players. I think that drains her a little bit on the offensive end.
“She played with a lot of confidence today. It was really good to see her have a good offensive game.”
The Rams also received a big lift off the bench from Emma Pyne, who scored 13 points – eight in the second quarter, which included a pair of clutch 3s.
“She really kept us going in the second quarter,” Elton said. “We struggled to shoot most of the game.”
The Knights took a 31-30 lead into halftime. Alli Lindsay’s 12 points – including two 3s – ignited the Knights. Abby Plaugher added seven points – all in the second quarter.
“I told the girls – ‘It’s impressive you got 30 points, but they have 31,’” Elton said. “Our focus in the second half was to knock it down a little bit and keep the score lower.
“They threw a little bit of a zone at us, and that really slowed us up. It took us a while to figure it out.”
The Rams still trailed by one after a low-scoring third quarter, 39-38. A bucket by Grace Rosica just over a minute into the frame gave the Rams a lead they would not lose. Her basket marked the beginning of a 7-0 Ram run that included a Pyne three and a pair of Yoder foul shots that put Pennridge on top 45-39 with 5:48 remaining.
A scoring drought of close to four minutes for both teams came to an end when Plaugher buried a three, and it was a 45-44 game after freshman Olivia Stone sank both ends of a one-and-one with 1:31 remaining in regulation. Freshman Anna Croyle, who scored nine points, answered for the Rams, burying both ends of a one-and-one, and Yoder gave the Rams some insurance when she connected on two more foul shots with 55 seconds remaining.
“Ryan Hodder only had three points, but her leadership helps a lot on the floor,” Elton said. “Anna Croyle had another nice game. She was 6-for-8 from the line. She’s been pretty consistent there.”
For the Knights, Lindsay and Plaugher led the way with 14 points each. Stone added six points.
Pennridge (2-5, 1-5 SOL) will travel to Central Bucks West on Friday, and North Penn (0-5) will be on the road at Souderton Friday for a 5 p.m. contest.
