Souderton notched a non-league win in SOL softball action Monday.
Non-league
SOUDERTON 14, LANSDALE CATHOLIC 1 (5 innings)
McKenna Schroding was impressive in her debut for the Indians Monday. The freshman pitcher allowed just three hits and no earned runs in the abbreviated contest, fanning seven and walking none. If that wasn’t enough, Schroding was 2-for-4 at the plate with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored.
The Indians scored all the runs Schroding would need in the bottom of the first. Sierra Ripka led off with a double to left and scored one out later on an error. After Ryan Zimmerman singled home a run, Taylor Nelson ripped a two-run home run to center field, putting the Indians on top 4-0. Singles by Kayley York and Brooke Scotti (RBI) upped that lead to 5-0.
The Indians added to their lead in the second. With one out, Megan Kummery was hit by a pitch, and Schroding helped her own cause, with a two-run blast over the center field fence. Riley York followed with a home run to center, and singles by Zimmerman and Nelson set the stage for the fourth run of the inning, giving the Indians a commanding 9-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth, the visiting Crusaders benefitted from back-to-back Souderton errors to plate an unearned run – the first run of the season allowed by the Indians. They answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning. Highlights included singles by Riley York, Abby Burns (RBI) and Kummery (2 RBIs).
Schroding retired the Crusaders in order in the top of the fifth, bringing an early end to the non-league game.
Riley York (2-for-3, HR, RBI, 2 runs), Zimmerman (2-for-2, RBI, two runs), and Nelson (2-for-2, HR, 2 RBIs, one run) led the Indians 12-hit attack.
In Souderton’s three games combined in the young season, the Indians’ pitchers have shown remarkable control, striking out 33 and walking just one.
Souderton (3-0) will travel to Central Bucks South for Wednesday’s SOL opener.
