CR North notched a win in SOL softball action Saturday.
Non-league
COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 11, CONWELL-EGAN 8
Less than 24 hours after Friday’s emotional win over archrival Council Rock South, the Indians were back on the diamond at Conwell-Egan for a non-league game. The Indians rallied from an 8-6 deficit to score five runs over the last three innings while keeping the Eagles off the scoreboard.
“After such an emotionally charged game yesterday, our girls had a bit of a letdown today,” Rock North coach Susan Yee said. “We weren’t quite as crisp, as we allowed some mistakes to turn into extra bases.
“However, I couldn’t be more proud of the fight our girls have in them. After a horrendous fourth inning where we gave up six runs, the girls responded by immediately posting three of our own to retake the lead, and added some insurance the next two innings as well.”
Kandace Kiskurno led off the fifth inning with a single, and after the next two batters were retired on fly outs, Kiskurno stole second. Jayme Bordner’s double off the center field fence plated Kiskurno. Emma Zoldi’s line drive single to center scored Bordner, and freshman Taylor Gearhart’s single advanced Zoldi to third. Zoldi scored one pitch later as part of a double steal with Gearhart, giving the Indians an 8-6 lead.
For good measure, they added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
Gearhart and freshman Molly Sheehy both finished the day 4-for-4 to lead the Indians’ 17-hit attack. Gearhart contributed a triple while Sheehy had two doubles. Zoldi finished the game 3-for-5 with a double. Kiskurno was 3-for-4 with a double. Sheehy and Kat Hastings each had three RBIs while Zoldi and Bordner had one each.
“Their bats and base running have really been the story so far this season, with the team as a whole putting together a 17-hit game in which they posted runs in six of the seven innings played,” Yee said. “The girls have developed the confidence that they can hit and score as well as anybody, and have really shown great teamwork from top to bottom.
“Now we just have to work on solidifying the defense from inning one through inning seven before the girls turn me totally grey by the end of the season.
“However, all joking aside, they really are a great group who work hard and have fun. I couldn’t be happier that despite coming in as the underdog this season, they are seeing some early success as a result of their efforts.”
Hastings earned the complete game win in the circle, allowing four earned runs while striking out eight.
“Kat Hastings was phenomenal in the circle down the stretch, posting five Ks over the final three innings and retiring six of seven batters over the final two frames to close out the game,” Yee said. “She put her heart and soul into it and has been a phenomenal team leader both on and off the field.
“We also had fantastic performances out of our two freshmen, Taylor Gearhart and Molly Sheehy, who put together a combined 8-for-8 performance, with five runs, and Molly’s three RBIs. Taylor also scored the final insurance run in the top of the seventh when she stepped to the plate with two outs and drove a triple past the right fielder, and then took home on the errant throw to third base.
“I’ve been extremely impressed with the work ethic these two have shown and the resulting quick adjustment they have made to playing at the varsity level. Having them step in and contribute right away has really been huge for this team.”
Council Rock North (3-0, 1-0 SOL) will host Bensalem on Monday.
