Non-league
PENNSBURY 5, CONWELL-EGAN 4
The neighboring schools locked horns in a classic battle with the Falcons eking out the win.
“They can flat out hit,” Pennsbury coach Frank McSherry said. “We tell the kids – ‘You have a big target. Anybody that comes to us is bringing their ‘A’ game. It’s going to be the best game they’ve played all season.’ They had 12 hits – they ripped the ball.”
The Eagles put a run on the board in the third, but the Falcons answered with three runs in the fourth to take a lead they would not lose. Ali Charlier had an RBI single, and Cynthia Ehrenfeld delivered a two-run single.
In the top of the fifth, the Eagles added a run to make it a 3-2 game, but the Falcons scored a single run in both the fifth and sixth innings to go on top 5-2. Ehrenfeld delivered a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth that turned out to be the game-winner. Ehrenfeld’s three RBIs led the Falcons.
“She’s a kid that played jayvee until this year,” McSherry said of his senior designated player. “She came in not knowing her role, but man oh man did she assume a senior role. She does everything for the team.
“She’s almost like a team mom. She’s awesome. We’re putting her in the designated player position, and she’s hitting the heck out of the ball. She’s had some great at-bats. Her home run was cool, but her base hit in the fourth inning – she had an at-bat that was probably six or seven pitches and then she lined a base hit to center field that scored two runs.”
Riley Mahony, Rowan Mulholland and Ehrenfeld each had two hits to lead the Falcons.
Ainsley McClure earned the complete game win, allowing four runs while striking out seven and walking none.
McSherry had high praise for the top of the Eagles’ lineup.
“Their leadoff kid (Ange) Bresnan, who’s their shortstop, is big time,” the Falcons’ coach said. “We pitched her pretty well – she was 1-for-4, but she had a triple, and she’s really, really good. Their pitcher (Ahlana Sesar) is only a sophomore, and she was 3-for-4 with a double and two singles.
“Katie Brennan, a sophomore, is a Pennsbury kid and went to middle school in Pennsbury, and I remember as an eighth grader, I was teasing her, ‘You better be coming here, don’t go to my alma mater’ because I went to Egan. She was 4-for-4 with three singles and a home run. (Bella) Palmer, their cleanup kid, had a couple of singles, but those two, three and four hitters had nine of their 12 hits, so they have some kids that can hit.”
Pennsbury (5-0, 4-0 SOL) will host North Penn on Tuesday.
