Non-league
SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP 13, COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 6
The Spartans – sparked by the five-goal effort of Maddie Yoder – overcame the elements as well as the Golden Hawks in Thursday’s non-league contest.
“With a mix-up of starting time, no warm up, and harsh wind – the beginning of the game was tough,” Springfield coach Marissa Conover said. “We made sure to go in and give our all despite the circumstances.
“We scored our first goal within the first minute. The game was tied back and forth for the first quarter of the game. We eventually took the lead and maintained dominance.”
The Spartans, who took a 5-3 lead into halftime, outscored the Hawks 8-3 in the second half.
Also for the Spartans, Emma Yoder had a hat trick, and Ella Marino had a pair of goals. Lauren Corrado was part of five goals, scoring once and assisting on four others. Fiona Rizzo added a goal and an assist, and Shannon Meder had one goal. Stella Nelson had two assists, and Maddie McDevitt added one assist.
Spartan goalie Tess Talbot was credited with eight saves in the win.
“Our defense, middies, and attack were able to work together and move the ball well,” Conover said. “I’m happy about the time we had with possession of the ball.
“Ella Marino continued to read the other team and intercepted passes throughout – giving us many turnovers.”
For the Golden Hawks, Rianna Shields had two goals while Megan Rafter, Carley Irvin, Cailey Hiscox and Grace Franchini had one apiece. Irvin also had a pair of assists, and Amy Loving had one assist.
