Non-league
Garnet Valley Holiday Tournament
CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 48, DOWNINGTOWN EAST 31
Taylor Hinkle was – in a word – unstoppable.
The Holy Family signee scored 21 points – all in the first half – in a stellar outing, propelling the Titans to a commanding 35-20 halftime lead on their way to the no-doubt-about-it win over the Cougars. Included in Hinkle’s remarkable offensive display were four 3-pointers.
“I thought that as a whole we were more aggressive, especially on offense,” South coach Beth Mattern said. “We really just did a great job finishing in the first half, and I think it showed because Taylor had 21 in the first half. We came out and we played strong, and we were able to finish.”
The Titans – behind nine points from Hinkle and five more from Yoyo Samayoa – opened up a 16-9 lead after one quarter. Hinkle scored 12 points in the second quarter, including three 3-pointers, and the Titans led by 15 heading into halftime. The Titans – with the game well in hand – outscored the Cougars 13-11 in a low-scoring half. Senior Sammy Schiesser accounted for 10 of her team’s 13 points.
“I thought Sammy Schiesser came off the bench and played one of her best games of the season,” Mattern said. “She scored 10 points, which was nice, but she also made some really good decisions.
“As a whole, I was really happy with everyone who stepped out on the floor today. I thought Sammy really stepped up when we needed her tonight.”
Schiesser finished with 10 points while Samayoa added eight. Only four players put points on the board for Downingtown East.
Mattern is hoping Monday’s win is a sign of good things to come for a Titans’ squad that has – on some days – looked the part of world beaters and on others struggled.
“Inconsistent is a great way to describe our team so far this season,” the Titans’ coach said. “I think it boils down to our decision making, and our awareness on the court sometimes in games that we’ve lost – that’s where, in my opinion, we’ve really struggled.
“Maybe making a basket or two earlier when you’re struggling would have made it a little bit easier and taken some pressure off, but our decision making is what gets us to that point. I think that’s where we really can’t force things and just really need to clean up some of the mistakes that we make.”
At a time when many teams are forced to cancel games because of the pandemic, Mattern and her players are just happy to be playing.
“Every team is dealing with some sickness right now, and it’s a tough part of the season,” Mattern said. “Getting to play and getting a W actually is wonderful and hopefully will help keep our momentum going into the new year.”

Anna Barry torched the Magic for 21 points – 16 in the middle two quarters – to keep the Patriots in Monday’s non-league game. Included in the sophomore sharpshooter’s 21 points were four 3-pointers.
“Anna can flat out shoot the ball, and it’s been different for her this year since she is no longer ‘unknown,’” East coach Liz Potash said. “She hit lots of shots for us tonight, she’s a confident shooter that can score from deep.
“Anna’s shooting singlehandedly kept us in the game tonight when we struggled to get stops on the defensive end.”
The Patriots trailed by 9-8 after one quarter and still trailed by one at halftime (20-19). Barry accounted for 10 of her team’s 19 points in the half – eight in the second quarter. It was more of the same in the third quarter. The Patriots – behind eight points from Barry – outscored the Magic 10-8 to go into the final quarter with a tenuous 29-28 lead.
It was close until the final horn as the Patriots connected on a shot in the closing seconds that turned out to be just inside the arc, leaving them one point shy on the scoreboard.
In addition to Barry, Shayne LeRay and Emily Curran each had seven points while Elise Duffy had six.
Central Bucks East (3-4, 2-2 SOL) will travel to Wildwood to compete in the Boardwalk Classic where the Patriots will take on Ocean City in an opening round game on Thursday.
