Boardwalk Basketball Classic (John Pierantozzi Bracket)
CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 52, GERMANTOWN FRIENDS 41
In a week that saw many teams lose games to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Patriots not only played a pair of games – they won the title in their bracket at the Boardwalk Classic in Wildwood.
“I think we got lucky – we had our fingers crossed and were holding our breath the whole time,” East coach Erik Henrysen said. “It was great, and it was getting back to some semblance of normal. We made sure everybody was on board with the traveling, and it looked like it worked out for us.
“We had two tough games – Ocean City is a good program, and tonight we played a really talented Germantown Friends team. Each night we found a different way and a different guy to contribute. We’re really happy with the results.”
In Thursday’s title game, the Patriots led 12-6 after one quarter only to see the Tigers rally, trimming East’s lead to 20-18 at the intermission. It was still a two-point game heading into the fourth quarter, 35-33.
“Tonight was a game of runs,” Henrysen said. “We got up six or eight and they would come right back.
“Two or three times we felt like we had an opportunity to create some distance, and credit to Germantown Friends. They have a couple of guards that are really, really tough, and they hit big shot after big shot. We weren’t really able to pull away until the end.”
The Patriots saved their best for last, outscoring the Tigers 17-8 to earn the double-digit win. Jacob Cummiskey was the catalyst for the Patriots, scoring eight of his game high 16 in the frame.
“Jacob Cummmiskey had an incredible fourth quarter,” Henrysen said. “Germantown Friends was ramping up their pressure, and he was able to go by that first level and either score or find guys.
“We stretched a little bit of a lead of six or eight in the second quarter and in the third quarter, and both times they were able to make a run at us and tighten the gap. That third time we were able to make a run in the fourth quarter, and we were able to hold onto it.”
In addition to scoring 16 points, Cummiskey also had five rebounds and three assists. Brett Young contributed nine points on three 3-pointers. Nick Rivera added seven points while Tyriq Toney-Bailey and Liam Cummiskey both had six points. Aidan Weaver added a team high six rebounds to go along with five points and four assists.
