COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 7, PHOENIXVILLE 3
(Submitted by Council Rock North girls lacrosse)
In a thrilling season opener, Council Rock North downed Phoenixville 7-3 in an away game to set the tone for an exciting year ahead.
Last season, the Phantoms suffered a heartbreaking 2-goal loss to the Indians in the PIAA semifinals, and they came out firing in this year’s opener, eager to avenge that defeat.
The Phantoms wasted no time, charging ahead with an early 3-0 lead. Their intensity seemed unstoppable until a critical timeout taken by Indians coach Denise Noseworthy gave the team a much-needed chance to regroup. After the break, the defense, led by senior captain and goalkeeper Lucy Carney, made a dramatic shift in momentum.
Carney, who anchored the defense, was backed by fellow captains Kiely Lyons and Abby Steadman, whose tight marking and constant communication helped stymie the Phantom attack. As the defense settled in, the offense found their rhythm. With just minutes left in the first half, Council Rock North managed to close the gap. Cat McBride found the back of the net, and shortly thereafter, Ellie Carney scored, cutting the Phantoms’ lead to just one as the teams headed into halftime.
The second half began with the same intensity, but this time it was all North. Dominating the draw circle, the Indians controlled possession, thanks to stellar performances from Ellie Carney, Olivia Esposito, and McBride, who won every draw in the second half.
Esposito proved to be a force with 1 goal, 2 ground balls, and 4 draw controls. Ellie Carney added a goal, an assist, and 5 draw controls. McBride had a standout game, scoring 3 goals, 1 assist, and collecting 4 ground balls to go with 6 draw controls.
The Indians’ attack was further fueled by the breakout performance of Gabby Mann, who ran the offense with poise, contributing 1 goal, 3 assists, and a ground ball.
The defense remained impenetrable throughout the second half, with Lucy Carney’s 70 percent save percentage helping to deny Phoenixville any further goals. Steadman, Lyons, and Addison Deppi were key contributors, with Deppi adding an assist and 2 ground balls to her defensive duties. Ella Gearhat played a crucial role in shutting down the Phantoms’ offense in the final stretch.
As the game neared its conclusion, Jordy Zazoff sealed the victory with North’s seventh goal, putting the game out of reach for Phoenixville.
By the numbers: Council Rock North: Cat McBride (3 goals, 1 assist, 4 GB, 6 DC), Gabby Mann (1 goal, 3 assists, 1 GB), Ellie Carney (1 goal, 1 assist, 5 DC), Esposito (1 goal, 2 GB, 4 DC), Jordy Zazoff (1 goal), Addison Deppi (1 assist, 2 GB).
Up next: North (1-0 overall) will host Springfield Twp. at 5 pm Thursday.

Playing their third game in short order, Plymouth Whitemarsh overcame a sluggish start to pick up their third win of the season, a 14-6 victory over Methacton in Tuesday’s nonleague game.
Maite Jayo led the Colonials with 4 goals, while Kaiane Jayo, Grace Kerns, and Grace Harvey each picked up 2 goals and an assist.

Plymouth Whitemarsh coach Ellen Reilly: “We had a slow start. It took us awhile to get our legs. It was our third game in 4 days. Once we settled down, we played better. We are still feeling each other out. We have several young players who need to understand game sense and our upper classmen need to continue to work with them to show them the way.”
Up next: PW (3-0 overall, 1-0 American Conference) is right back in action Wedmesday, hosting Pennsbury at 3:30 pm.
Plymouth Whitemarsh 6 8 – 14

WISSAHICKON 15, UNIONVILLE 11
Wissahickon rode its defense early, then Lex McCabe caught fire and poured in a game-high 7 goals as the Trojans topped Unionville 15-11 in Tuesday’s nonleague matchup. The second quarter turned out to be key, with the Trojans outscoring Unionville 7-3 in the second frame.
By the numbers: Wissahickon: Emma Greenberg (3 goals, 2 assists, 8 DC), Lex McCabe (7 goals, 1 GB), Sophia Stehlik (2 goals, 3 assists, 5 DC), Lila Marciniak (1 goal, 2 assists, 6 DC, 4GB), Sam Farno (1 goal, 5 GB, 1 INT), Paige Dratch (1 goal, 1 assist); Ava Fell (11 saves).
Wissahickon coach Chuck Wurzbach on the defensive effort: “This was a hard-fought, tough game against a really well coached team in Unionville. It was a long bus ride and then the game was delayed a bit because we were waiting for a ref to show up from a different site. That didn’t stop the defense from setting the tone at the start of the game and they stayed solid through the game, getting 16 turnovers along with 11 saves from Ava Fell. Ellie Stein does such a great job running that unit and she was key to our ability to get the ball up the field in transition.
Offensive second quarter: “In the second quarter, we started to click offensively, with 3 goals from Lex McCabe along with contributions from Paige Dratch and Emma Greenberg to open up the lead.”
Maintaining the lead: “Both teams traded goals in the third quarter, but after Unionville picked up their fourth yellow at the 9:18 mark in the fourth quarter, we tried to slow the game down a bit and were able to ride out the win. I’m happy for the team and with their performance for all four quarters.”
Up next: The Trojans (2-0 overall) will host Upper Moreland at 5 pm Friday.
Unionville 2 2 3 4 – 11
Wissahickon 3 7 3 3 – 15
PENNRIDGE 10, UPPER MORELAND 6
(Check back for Pennridge game info)
This was a game of runs for both teams.
The Golden Bears took a 3-1 lead after one quarter but trailed by two at halftime. It was a 6-6 game early in the fourth quarter, but the Rams closed it out with four straight goals.
By the numbers: Pennridge: Madigan Posey |(2 goals, 4 assists)m Aubrey Bailey (3 goals, 4 grounds balls, 6 caused turnovers), Harper Posey (3 ground balls, 1 caused turnover)
Upper Moreland: Annalise Messina (5 goals, 11 draw controls), Keiley Hawk (1 goal), Keria Hess (2 assists), Addi Hurley (16 saves)
Pennridge coach Maddie Dachowski: “We had a hard time on the draw the whole game and #12 on the other team was very dominant.
“We had a slow start with minimal possession or possessions that felt rushed and had careless mistakes. Bree Bailey getting a hattrick to start off her scoring of the season was great. She was a spark on the field in all directions and was all over the stat sheet on this one. A win is a win, but I am disappointed that we didn’t have a better showing on the Offensive end. UM has a talented Sr. Goalie and we had a ton of missed shots because of it. We need to focus on playing together as a unit on the attacking end. It felt really individual and with a team of such strong playmakers who have shared the field together for year, I just expected more. Looking forward to Thursdays match up vs Perk Valley, looking to test the strength of some different looks this week.”
Upper Moreland coach Kim Frantz: “This was a battle between both teams. It was 3-1 UM after the first quarter, and 5-3 Pennridge at halftime. After the third quarter it was 6-4 Pennridge, but at the start of the 4th quarter UM scored 2 quick goals to make the game tied 6-6. A card late in the game with just a few minutes left gave Pennridge advantage to find the net for 3 quick goals.
—Props: “Addi Hurley had a phenomenal game with a lot of saves and just played outstanding. Annalise did a great job controlling the draws throughout the whole game. Our defense is beginning to come together and mesh as a unit.”
Up next: The Rams (2-0 overall) will host Perkiomen Valley at 7 pm Thursday. The Golden Bears (1-1) will visit Wissahickon at 5 pm Friday.
