COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 4, COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 3
It wasn’t your typical ending, but Rock North was more than happy to take it, earning the walk-off win at Trenton Thunder Ballpark when – with the bases loaded – Peyton Shaw was hit by a pitch, forcing home the game-winner.
Rock North actually trailed 3-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh after the Golden Hawks scored a run in the top of the inning.
A key stretch of the game came in the fifth inning, In the top of the inning, the Golden Hawks – who led 2-0 -loaded the
bases with none out, thanks to back-to-back walks and a single by Reed Curtier. Will Seiler came up with a huge strikeout, and the Indians escaped unscathed by turning a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.
Rock North rallied to knot the score in the bottom of the inning, benefitting from a pair of hit batters, a walk, a single by Seiler and a Rock South miscue.
“The key play on defense was a bases loaded 6-4-3 double play that turned the momentum into our dugout,” Rock North Matt Schram said.
Seiler – who had a key single in the seventh – earned the win, allowing four hits and one run in 3 1/3 innings of relief. Shaw started the game on the mound and threw 3 2/3 innings, allowing one hit and two runs.
The win evened the three-game series between the two teams at one game apiece.
By the numbers: Council Rock North: Kyle Book (2-for-2, 2RBI).
Peyton Shaw (3.2 IP, 1H, 2R, 2ER, 2BB, 3K), Will Seiler (W) (3.1 IP, 4H, 1R, 1ER, 2BB, 3K)
Key innings: Top of seventh: With the score knotted 2-2, Rock South’s Coooper Sherwood was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, and he advanced to second and then third on back-to-back groundouts. Sherwood scored the go-ahead run when Owen McLean grounded a two-out single to right field.
Bottom of seventh: Trailing by one, the Indians scored a pair. Will Cabo was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jude Hamilton and moved up to third on a single by Seiler. Book’s sacrifice fly plated Cabo with the tying run. Back-to-back walks to Preston Martin and Noah Furman loaded the bases for Shaw.
Council Rock North coach Matt Schram: “Game 2 of our 3-game series was played today at Trenton Thunder stadium. It’s already incredibly tough to win games in our league, but to play our home game at Trenton is a big sacrifice.
“The game was a unique pitchers’ duel. Both team’s starters were returning to the mound for the first time this year. Peyton Shaw took the ball for us and was Shaw-like. He was on a monitored pitch count and was taken out in the middle fourth for Will Seiler. Seiler finished the game and kept South at bay for the second half of the game.
“Peyton Shaw had the walk off hit-by-pitch RBI to win the game. It was a hard-fought victory.”
Up next: Council Rock North (10-6, 6-5 SOL) will be on the road at Bensalem for game one of a three-game series Monday, and Council Rock South (6-9, 4-7) will host Harry S Truman in game one of the series.
