BASEBALL
Senior Mark Angelo (Quakertown) was 3-for-4 in East Stroudsburg’s 22-2 non-league win at the University of the Sciences on Thursday. The Warriors, who improved to 14-11, pounded out 26 hits in the rout. On Friday, Angelo slammed his third home run of the year in East Stroudsburg’s 4-3 win over West Chester in game one of a doubleheader. Charlie Kelly (Council Rock South) singled and scored on a wild pitch in West Chester’s 6-4 win in the nightcap.
Blair Dameron (Pennridge) was 5-for-7 in West Chester’s sweep of Saturday’s twinbill against East Stroudsburg (9-1, 7-2). ESU scored first in both games. In game one, the Warriors went on top 1-0 on an RBI double by Angelo. The Golden Rams scored four runs in the bottom of the first with Dameron delivering the big blow, a two-run single. Dameron hit a two-run home run in the third. West Chester upped its conference mark to 7-1 while East Stroudsburg fell to 1-7.
Tony Donofry (Council Rock North) was 1-for-3 with two RBIs in Bloomsburg’s 7-5 loss in game one of a doubleheader against Millersville on Friday. Chris Edgar (North Penn) drove in a run for Millersville with a sacrifice fly in the seventh that knotted the score and sent the game into extra innings. Joe Crossin (Pennsbury) worked an inning of relief for Bloomsburg, allowing one run. In Bloomsburg’s 13-5 win in game two, Keith Meyer (Council Rock South) was 1-for-3 with two runs scored. Edgar was 1-for-2 with a run scored. On Saturday, the two teams met again for a doubleheader, and Millersville swept the pair, 6-2, 11-5. Donofry contributed an RBI double in game two.
LaSalle University freshman Jon Gyles (Central Bucks West) had an RBI single, but St. Joe’s rallied for a 5-4 come-from-behind win on Saturday. The Explorers fell to 8-8 overall, 0-2 in the Atlantic 10.
BASKETBALL
Sophomore Lavoy Allen (Pennsbury) contributed 11 points and 10 rebounds in Temple’s 66-57 loss to Arizona State in Friday’s opening round of the NCAA Tournament at American Airlines Arena in Miami, Fla. Allen started 31 of 33 games for the Owls, who captured the Atlantic 10 Tournament championship for the second time in as many years. In Temple’s 55-53 win over Xavier in the conference semifinals, Allen had 10 points and 11 rebounds. In the Owls’ 69-64 win over Duquesne in the title game, Allen had 10 points and 14 rebounds. For the season, Allen averaged 10.9 PPG and a team-high nine rebounds.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Junior Jenny Collins (North Penn) scored a goal in Maryland’s 10-5 win over Boston College on Saturday. With the win, the Terrapins, ranked second in the nation, improved to 8-0 overall, 3-0 ACC.
Kutztown University’s Leeann Pica (Neshaminy) connected for the hat trick, but it wasn’t enough as Slippery Rock earned a 14-9 win over the Golden Bears in PSAC action on Saturday. Pica also was credited with one assist and four ground balls. Julie Rosenkaimer (North Penn) had four ground ball pickups while Justine Simonsen (Upper Moreland) had two. Kutztown is 1-4.
Chrissy Stokes (Plymouth Whitemarsh) had the hat trick and also contributed one assist in West Chester’s 18-2 win over Bloomsburg last Tuesday. The win upped the Golden Rams record to 4-0.
MEN’S SWIMMING
Widener sophomore Jesse Bregman (Springfield-Montco) was named to the second Middle Atlantic Conference Winter Sportsmanship Teams. The team includes a player from each squad in the conference who demonstrates exceptional sportsmanship through their actions on and off the field during the season. Bregman enjoyed an outstanding year in which he helped Widener capture its 11th Middle Atlantic Conference title in a row. He was part of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team and won numerous individual races during the season as well.
MEN’S TENNIS
Carson Richter (Plymouth Whitemarsh) and Adraian Avena notched an 8-5 doubles win in Millersville’s 7-2 win over Chestnut Hill College on Tuesday. Richter fell at fourth singles (5-7, 2-6). The win extended Millersville’s winning streak to five and upped its spring record to 5-1 and its team record to 6-3.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
In a match of former SOL standouts, Gettysburg freshman Liz Heisler (Wissahickon) defeated Swarthmore’s Kathryn Stockbower (Upper Dublin). It was Gettysbury’s lone win as regionally-ranked Swarthmore earned an 8-1 win. Stockbower also was part of the third doubles team that notched an 8-4 win.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
East Stroudsburg senior Katherine Doyle (Central Bucks West) captured second place in the 200m (25.78) and finished 5th in the 200m at the Lynchburg Invitational at Liberty University on Saturday. Kayla Littrell (William Tennent) was 28th in the 100m (14.19) and 30th (28.46) in the 200 m. Kristen Morby (Central Bucks West) finished third in the pole vault (9-8 ¼).
