BASEBALL
Jon Gyles (Central Bucks West) drove in a pair of runs in LaSalle’s 6-2 win over Fordham on Friday. He finished the game 3-for-5. It was his 16th multi-hit game of the year, which is second on the team. His eight three-plus hit games leads the squad. He had two doubles in the game, giving him 15 for the season which is fifth all-time in a single season. It is his seventh game this season with at least two RBIs. On Tuesday, Gyles had a single in LaSalle’s 3-2 win over Penn State.
LaSalle sophomore Kevin Christy (North Penn) was named the Philadelphia Big 5 Pitcher of the Week in voting conducted by the city’s head coaches and sports information offices. Christy struck out six batters in 6.2 scoreless innings last Friday versus St. Joseph’s. The sophomore hurler allowed only one runner to third and left the game leading 1-0 before the Hawks rallied with two runs in the ninth. He leads the team in ERA, innings and strikeouts.
Colin Tosti (Neshaminy) had a pair of hits, including a triple, and two RBIs in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 19-6 win over Marywood on Saturday. In game two of the doubleheader, teammate Jay Sechowicz (Council Rock South) had a home run and two RBIs in Gwynedd’s 25-7 win. As a result of its wins, Gwynedd secured the #2 seed in the upcoming CSAC Tournament and will host a first round game on Wednesday, May 12, against Neumann.
Mike Knipe (Pennridge) and Joe Crane (Council Rock South) both had hits in Chestnut Hill’s 3-2 loss to Post University on Saturday. On Wednesday, Knipe had a pair of hits and two RBIs in Chestnut Hill’s 3-1 win over Wilmington University. He also scored a run. Alex Latchum (Central Bucks South) and Crane both contributed hits in the win. On Tuesday, Latchum had a pair of hits, scored two runs and contributed an RBI in Chestnut Hill’s 6-3 loss to Philadelphia University. Teammates Andrew Donofry (Hatboro-Horsham) and Eric Blood (Pennridge) each added a hit.
FOOTBALL
Matt Freed (Souderton) was named to East Stroudsburg’s 2009-10 Athletic Director’s Honor Roll which recognizes student-athletes who have maintained a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.25 while participating in a varsity sport.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Lake Erie University freshman Julia Kudla (Souderton) was named the East Coast Conference Rookie of the Week on Monday for the week ending May 2. Kudla scored eight goals and contributed three assists in the Storm's lone game last week, a 22-20 overtime win over visiting Indiana Tech in the Storm's home finale. She scored both of Lake Erie's goals in the overtime periods on free-position shots. Her 11 points matched a career high, which she previously set on April 14 against Tiffin. Kudla is currently fourth in the ECC in points per game (4.27) and assists per game (1.45). She is 10th in goals per game (2.82). It is the second time Kudla has won the award this season.
Allison Berger (Springfield) had four goals and three assists in Lock Haven’s 20-5 win over Bloomsburg in Friday’s PSAC semifinal. Berger averages 5.33 points per game – second in the PSAC. She has 46 assists on the year, fifth best in the nation and third best in the PSAC.
Colleen Dellostretto (Upper Moreland) scored a team-high four goals in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 18-8 win over Immaculata in a first round game of the 2010 CSAC Women’s Lacrosse Tournament on Saturday. The Griffins will advance to Tuesday’s second round where they will face second-seeded Centenary.

Michelle Mangiaruga (North Penn) scored four goals in East Stroudsburg’s 19-15 loss to Bloomsburg in the quarterfinals of the 2010 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Lacrosse Tournament on Tuesday. Teammate Jamie Wesztergom (Springfield) and Ali Green (North Penn) both added three goals for the Warriors. Wesztergom also had two assists. It was Green’s first career hat trick.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Kelly Modes (Neshaminy) was named MVP of the women’s soccer team at Bloomsburg. The senior led the Huskies in scoring with seven goals and three assists in 2009. She was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of American (NSCAA) Division II All-Region team and the PSAC Eastern Division Athlete of the Year while earning All-PSAC East first team honors for the fourth straight season. Modes finished her career 10th all-time in career scoring at Bloomsburg with 21 goals.
SOFTBALL
Senior Nicole Koren (William Tennent) collected her 11th home run of the season when she hit a solo shot in the first inning of Virginia’s 4-2 win over Boston College last Monday.
Deanna Dungee (North Penn) was 2-for-3 in Alvernia’s 8-4 loss to Lycoming on Saturday. She absorbed the loss on the mound. On Thursday, Dungee delivered a two-run double in Alvernia’s come-from-behind 8-7 win over DeSales.
In last weekend’s PSAC Tournament, West Chester defeated Lock Haven twice by identical 5-4 scores to earn a spot in this weekend’s PSAC championship round. In game one, Evelyn Anderson (Hatboro-Horsham) had a pair of hits and scored a run. Freshman Devon Utterback (Central Bucks South) earned the win on the mound, allowing one hit in 4.1 innings of scoreless relief. In game two, Anderson contributed one hit while Brooke Muth (Pennsbury) earned the win on the mound, allowing four hits and two earned runs in 4.1 innings of relief. The Golden Rams fell twice in Friday’s opening round of the PSAC championship, dropping a 13-1 decision to California and then falling to Bloomsburg 9-1.
Sophomore Samantha Schoell (North Penn) had three RBIs in Temple’s 5-0 win over LaSalle. The Owls swept the twinbill, winning the second game 3-1. At a year-end picnic, Schoell earned the team’s “Heart and Guts” award, given to the player who demonstrates a winning attitude and epitomizes a team player throughout the season. Schoell was honored at Temple’s eighth annual Breakfast of Champions on Wednesday. She was one of Temple’s Trustee Ten, the top 10 student-athletes in terms of grade point average. Schoell also is a member of the President’s Honor Roll.
Kirstin Allen (Central Bucks West) contributed a two-run double in Maine’s 7-4 win over Albany earlier this month.

MEN’S SWIMMING
Jeremy Frey (Central Bucks East) was named MVP of the men’s swimming team at Bloomsburg University. At the PSAC championships, Frey saved his best for last, breaking a 16-year-old school record in the 200-back by lowering the mark to 1:54.25 and taking fifth to earn All-PSAC honors. The record-setting performance was one of six times during the season that Frey broke school records. Three times he set new standards in the 200 IM, lowering the mark to 1:54.19 in posting a second place finish at the championships. Twice he lowered the mark in the 400 IM, shaving six seconds off the former record set last year. Frey ended the season with three NCAA ‘B’ cut times and qualified for the PSAC finals in three events, finishing second in the 200 IM, third in the 400 IM and fifth in the 200-back. He was the team’s top scorer at the PSAC championships as well as during dual meet competition. During the season, Frey had four multiple-win meets, including two in which he won three individual events to lead the Huskies.
MEN’S TENNIS
Chestnut Hill junior Carson Richter (Plymouth Whitemarsh) and Julius Twyman earned all-conference status at doubles.
Sophomore Dan Lee (Abington) won 6-4, 6-2 at sixth singles to clinch the 5-4 win for The College of New Jersey over Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday. On Tuesday, Lee earned a 6-0, 6-3 win at sixth singles in TCNJ’s 5-4 win over Haverford.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Bloomsburg’s Katie Hasyn (Lansdale) was named All-PSAC East in both singles and doubles play. She played number one singles for the Huskies and was 3-1 in conference play. Down the stretch, she won six of her final 10 matches to help the Huskies capture first place in the PSAC Eastern Division and third place at the PSAC championships. She was named the PSAC East Player of the Week on April 11 after going a combined 4-0 (including doubles) in two matches. She also was named All-PSAC East in doubles with Kristen Bonito. This is the first all-conference award for the two as a doubles team. On the year, Hasyn and Bonito have a record of 9-6, 9-4 in dual meet action. The pair won seven straight matches and nine of their last 11, including two at the PSAC championships.
MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Shippensburg junior Sean Stetler (Central Bucks South) took third place in the 3000m run at the Princeton Elite Meet with a time of 8:36.34.
Lock Haven’s Steve Roberts (Quakertown) finished eighth in the 100m dash at the Elliston Invitational with a time of 11.47. He was also part of Lock Haven’s second place 4x100m relay (42.02). Teammate Brandon Pomerantz (Council Rock North) was eighth in the 800m run with a time of 1:57.39. Nathan Lipsi (North Penn) finished seventh in the shot put with a throw of 13.04m.
West Chester’s Eric Akins (North Penn) finished 10th in the 400m hurdles at the Elliston Invitational with a time of 57.51. Teammate Brian Pellechia (North Penn) was 15th in the hammer throw (32.71m).
Shippensburg’s Eric Wolfe (Central Bucks) was 11th in the 400m dash at the Elliston Invitational with a time of 50.33.
East Stroudsburg’s McHanley Alfred (Cheltenham) finished sixth in the long jump at the Elliston Invitational with a leap of 13.68m.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Temple freshman Victoria Gocht (Upper Dublin) was named Women’s Rookie of the Year at the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championships which were won by the Owls for the first time ever. Gocht is the first Temple athlete since 2002 to earn Women’s Rookie of the Year. She placed second in the 800m run, crossing the finish line in a time of 2:10.47.
Lock Haven’s Vanita Moses (Neshaminy) won the hammer throw at the Elliston Invitational with a mark of 155-00. She was fourth in the discus with a mark of 117-05. Moses finished ninth in the shot put with a throw of 11.09m. Teammate Theresa Gould (Hatboro-Horsham) finished eighth in the 800m run with a time of 2:27.88.
West Chester’s Kim McManus (Plymouth Whitemarsh) was 13th in the 800m run at the Elliston Invitational with a time of 2:38.16. Teammate Kristina Koutsouros (Cheltenham) was second in the 5000m run with a time of 19:10.36. Danielle Howell (North Penn) was 14th in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:10.97. Brittany Foye (North Penn) finished 16th in the long jump (5.09m) while teammate Mackenzie Lauro (North Penn) was 18th in that event (5.02m). Foye finished sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 11.21m while Lauro was 10th (10.47m).
Shippensburg freshman Caitlin Stuetz (Cheltenham) finished fourth in the 100m hurdles at the Elliston Invitational with a time of 15.39.
East Stroudsburg’s Kayla Littrell (William Tennent) finished 10th in the 200m at the Elliston Invitational with a time of 28.67.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Philadelphia Biblical University junior Justin Brubaker (Souderton) was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) First Team All-American squad. It is the third straight year he has been selected as one of the country’s top players, garnering first team honors the last two years. His final tally of 5.98 kills per set put Brubaker over one full kill per game ahead of the second place finisher nationally. He shattered the PBU record for kills during a single match, erupting for 42 kills during a match with Hope International University in mid-March. He put up 30 or more kills on four different occasions and drove home 20 or more kills 16 different times. Brubaker also place nationally in aces per game (0.52, 13th), digs per game (2.94, 15th) and overall hitting percentage (.298, 28th). He finished the season with 17 double-doubles while helping leading PBU to its highest ever national ranking (4th). The junior hitter also guided the team to its first ever appearance in a NECVA championship match.
Brubaker was also named to the NECVA First team as well as the Western Division First team, and in addition, he became the first player in NECVA history to be named a divisional player of the year three consecutive seasons following his most recent nomination as the top player in the Western Division. He became the first player in PBU history to be honored as the NECVA Player-of-the-Year, an award that goes to the best player among the 44-team field as voted by the league’s coaches.
