MEN’S BASKETBALL
West Virginia freshman Dalton Pepper (Pennsbury) connected on a three with 4:55 remaining in Saturday’s game against Notre Dame to nearly erase a 22-point deficit, pulling the Mountaineers to within one (67-66). Pepper finished the game with six points off the bench for the eighth-ranked Mountaineers, who fell to the Irish 70-68. On Wednesday, Pepper had six points in West Virginia’s 80-52 rout of Rutgers. The Mountaineers are 12-2 this season.
Junior Andrew Young (Cheltenham) contributed eight points and five rebounds (all offensive) in California University of Pennsylvania’s 67-64 win over Shippensburg on Sunday.
Senior Robby Pines (Souderton) contributed nine points and eight assists in East Stroudsburg’s 81-73 win over Edinboro on Sunday. With the win, ESU improved to 13-0, the best start in school history. The Warriors were tied for third among other teams receiving votes in last week’s NABC Division II Men’s Basketball College Poll, which was released on Tuesday.
Junior forward Ryan Washington (Wissahickon) contributed 20 points and 13 rebounds in sixth-ranked Kutztown University’s 71-66 win over Lock Haven on Sunday. Kutztown will face undefeated East Stroudsburg on Wednesday.
Thomas Young (Plymouth Whitemarsh) had 17 points in IUP’s 73-62 win over Shippensburg on Saturday. The win was the 11th straight for the Crimson Hawks.
Senior Lavoy Allen (Pennsbury) came off the bench for the first time all season to score a season-high 20 points to lead #21/25 Temple to a 73-46 rout of St. Joe’s in the Atlantic Conference opener for both teams on Wednesday. Lavoy is third in the A-10 with a 10.3 rebound average.
Freshman Jim Connolly (Souderton) contributed seven points and two rebounds in Philadelphia University’s 69-59 win over Felician College on Saturday. Connolly started and played 27 minutes. Freshman Eddie DiRugeris (Pennsbury) came off the bench to contribute five points and two assists.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Heather McHugh (Norristown) had nine points in Lock Haven’s 73-43 win over East Stroudsburg on Sunday. In Lock Haven’s 71-50 loss to Kutztown on Saturday, she connected on a pair of three’s to finish with six points. McHugh scored a career-high 16 points - which included four three’s - in Lock Haven’s 70-34 rout of Washington Adventist University on Tuesday.
Junior Ashley Gale (Cheltenham) had nine points in LaSalle’s 65-52 loss at Richmond on Sunday. Senior Antonia Gale (Cheltenham) had five assists, five rebounds, four points and two steals. Ashley Gale had four points in LaSalle’s 68-49 loss to Princeton on Tuesday. Addie Micir (Council Rock North) had three points, four rebounds and two steals for Princeton.
Lindsey Tennett (Pennridge) had eight points and eight rebounds off the bench in Holy Family’s 74-46 win over Chestnut Hill on Thursday. Starting point guard Lauren Peters (Central Bucks West) had three points, three assists and four steals.
Sophomore Casey Pritz (Abington) had nine points and nine rebounds in Widener’s 59-40 loss to No. 9 William Patterson on Wednesday.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING
Bloomsburg’s Madeline Barlow (Pennsbury) finished first in the 100-meter free with a time of 1:04.96 in the 74th annual Bob Mowerson College Swim Coaches Forum meet in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., on Thursday. There were 13 colleges and universities entered in the meet.
Freshman Megan Lafferty (Upper Dublin) finished fourth in the 100 free with a time of 52.98 in the University of Maryland’s 167-129 win over Rutgers on Saturday. The Terps are 7-1 overall (3-1 ACC).
WRESTLING
James Bak (Harry S. Truman) lost a 10-4 decision at 125 in Bloomsburg’s 22-16 loss to Northern Iowa on Saturday. He also dropped his match in a 38-7 loss to second-ranked Iowa State. Bak won by forfeit In Bloomsburg’s 41-6 win over Sacred Heart on Tuesday. Bloomsburg is 8-4 this season.
J.J. Lester (Central Bucks South) dropped a 5-3 decision at 149 in Millersville’s 36-9 loss to Lock Haven on Wednesday.
Junior David Luthy (Plymouth Whitemarsh) lost a 5-3 decision at 125 in East Stroudsburg’s 19-15 win over Wilkes on Tuesday.
