MEN’S BASKETBALL
Villanova freshman Ryan Arcidiacono (Neshaminy) was named the BIG EAST Rookie of the week for the second time in as many weeks last Monday. The Neshaminy grad gained the nod after his 32-point outburst in his first conference game against St. John’s. In that game, he sank seven three-point field goals, one shy of the single game Wildcat record established by Allan Ray on Nov. 27, 2005. The Cats upended the Red Storm 98-86 in overtime. Dick Vitale also named Arcidiacono as his “Diaper Dandy’ of the Week on Monday.

Arcidiacono scored seven points and handed out four assists in Villanova’s 72-61 loss at Syracuse on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 61-53 win over Southern Florida, Arcidiacono contributed five points and three assists.

Dan Werth (Souderton) scored 11 points in Eastern University’s 70-67 win over King’s College.

Junior guard Kenny Gula (Quakertown) scored 12 points in Moravian’s 85-59 loss to 6th ranked Catholic University on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 78-54 loss to Drew, Gula had seven points.

Point guard Marcus Badger (Plymouth Whitemarsh) had five assists in Randolph-Macon’s 78-51 win over Shenandoah on Wednesday.

Tim Abruzzo (Pennridge) scored a team-high 16 points in Navy Prep's 65-55 win over UCoonn at Avery Point.

Michael Guldin (Pennridge) contributed 11 points and four assists in DeSales University’s 69-63 win over Delaware Valley on Saturday. The Pennridge grad iced the win by hitting 7-of-8 free throws down the stretch, including two with six seconds left for the final score. In Tuesday’s 69-55 win over King’s College, Guldin had eight points and two assists.  In Monday’s 77-68 loss to Arcadia, Guldin had 10 points.

Senior Khalif Wyatt (Norristown) was the game high scorer for the fifth time this season with 24 points on 7-of-11 shooting, which included a 3-of-4 effort from beyond the arc, in Temple’s 64-54 win over St. Louis in the Owls A-10 home opener on Saturday. In Thursday’s 57-52 loss at Xavier, Wyatt had five points.

Chris Davis (Norristown) scored nine points and handed out five assists in Alvernia’s 78-57 win over Elizabethtown on Saturday. Teammate Steve Schneider (Central Bucks South) chipped in three points and two rebounds off the bench. In Wednesday’s 68-65 win over Widener, Davis contributed eight points, three assists and two steals.

Mike Marvin (Hatboro-Horsham) contributed a double-double, scoring 23 points and grabbing 14 rebounds in Penn State Abington’s 76-61 victory over Cazenovia College on Saturday. In last Sunday’s 108-79 loss to Morrisville State, Marvin had his double-double streak snapped at seven but still had 11 points and nine rebounds.

Sean Brooks (North Penn) scored five points and handed out two assists in Washington College’s 62-61 win over Franklin & Marshall on Saturday. Teammate Dave Knox (Central Bucks South) added two points and two rebounds. In Tuesday’s 76-67 loss to Dickinson, Brooks contributed 11 points, two rebounds, three steals and one assists while Knox came off the bench and – in 28 minutes of action- scored 13 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. He also had three assists.

Junior forward Connor Poston (Hatboro-Horsham) contributed eight points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots in Gettysburg’s 84-78 win over Muhlenberg on Saturday. In Tuesday’s 61-58 win over Ursinus, senior Derek Brooks (North Penn) led Gettysburg with season highs of 16 points, six rebounds and six assists.

CJ Aiken (Plymouth Whitemarsh) collected a season-high seven blocked shots and scored six points in St. Joseph’s 74-66 win over Duquesne on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 72-66 loss to #14 Butler, Aiken scored 13 points, including back-to-back three-pointers.

Joe Renzi (Abington) scored 10 points in Elizabethtown’s 74-67 loss to Alvernia on Wednesday.

Senior guard Jim Connolly (Souderton) contributed 17 points and four assists in Philadelphia University’s 67-63 win over Chestnut Hill on Saturday. Junior guard Nick Christian (Bensalem) contributed 10 points and 11 rebounds. In Wednesday’s 63-43 loss to the University of the Sciences, Connolly had eight points.

Sophomore Sam Pygatt (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored 11 points in the first half on 5-of-5 shooting and finished with 13 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals in Shippensburg’s 79-76 loss to California (Pa.) on Saturday. It is the fifth time in the last six games he has scored in double figures. In Friday’s 72-48 loss to PSAC West leader and No. 21 IUP, Pygatt scored 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting.

Zach Thomas (Plymouth Whitemarsh) contributed seven points and five rebounds in Neumann University’s 62-51 loss to Keystone on Saturday.

Junior guard AJ Picard (Souderton) contributed 15 points and five rebounds in Goldey-Beacom’s 83-70 loss to Holy Family on Saturday.

Junior Fran Rafferty (Upper Merion) tallied eight second-half points and grabbed eight rebounds in Cabrini’s 68-63 win over Marywood University on Saturday.

Pat Furst (Central Bucks West) scored 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the floor in Wilkes University’s 81-60 loss to Delaware Valley on Wednesday.

Junior point guard Jesse Krasna (Pennsbury) scored 12 points in Ursinus College’s 90-76 loss to McDaniel on Saturday. In Tuesday’s 61-58 loss to Gettysburg, freshman guard Mark Wonderling (Souderton) scored 12 points. Krasna had seven assists. Ursinus assistant coach Dennis Stanton, the former varsity coach at Souderton, will join two others as the Class of 2013 for the Philadelphia Small College Basketball Hall of Fame.

Sophomore guard Whis Grant (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored 29 points in East Strousburg’s 85-75 win at Edinboro on Saturday. ESU’s 8-1 start in PSAC play is its best in school history. In Wednesday’s 84-72 win over Slippery Rock, Grant scored 23 of his 28 points in the second half, sparking a second-half comeback for the Warriors, who outscored Slippery Rock 58-40 in the second half. Grant’s 23 points in the second half are tied for the most in a half by a Warrior in 11 seasons. Grant was 15-for-33 from the field, 8-for-17 from the 3-point line, and 17-for-18 at the foul line in two games this weekend. He averaged 28.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals while playing 64 of a possible 80 minutes.

Junior Lorenzo Christmas (Norristown) was one rebound away from recording his first career double-double at Bloomsburg, scoring 13 points and pulling down nine rebounds in the Huskies 66-64 win over Clarion on Saturday night. The Norristown grad converted an and-one play to break a 61-61 tie. In Friday’s 106-98 win over Lock Haven in double overtime, Christmas scored a team-high 29 points, one shy of his career high, on 10-for-19 shooting. He connected on four three-pointers.

Kutztown University’s Ryan Connolly (Souderton) has been named the PSAC East Freshman of the Week for the week ending Jan. 6. Connolly averaged 12.5 points and nine rebounds while shooting 50 percent from both the field (9-of-18) and three-point range (5-of-10) in a pair of games. Against California (Pa.), Connolly turned in his second career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. He followed that with 13 points and eight rebounds against No. 16 IUP. Connolly was the team’s leading rebounder in both contests.

Connolly had nine points and three rebounds in Kutztown’s 99-76 loss to Slippery Rock on Saturday. In Friday’s 78-77 double overtime loss to Edinboro on Friday, Connolly sank four three’s on his way to a 16-point effort.

Freshman Aaron Morgan (Council Rock South) has started 15 of 17 games at UMBC this season and is playing an average of 31.9 minutes per game. The CR North grad is averaging 5.9 points and 2.9 rebounds. In Saturday's 68-53 loss to Vermont, Morgan had eight points and two assists.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Sophomore Jessica Schmidt (Abington) collected a double-double – 21 points and 10 rebounds – in Penn State Abington’s 74-64 win over Cazenovia College. It was the Nittany Lions’ first-ever MEAC conference win over Cazenovia. With the win, Penn State Abington is 5-0 in NEAC play, the lone undefeated team. In Tuesday’s 64-56 win over Wilson, Schmidt added another double-double, posting 10 points and 13 rebounds. In last Sunday’s 51-41 win over Morrisville State, Schmidt scored 14 points and pulled down seven rebounds.

Mashira Newman (Upper Dublin) scored 12 points to go along with seven rebounds and five assists in Millersville’s 60-53 win over No. 16 IUP on Saturday.

Kelsey Ryan (Neshaminy) scored 12 of her 14 points in the second half of Lock Haven’s 75-69 road win at Mansfield on Saturday. In Friday’s 80-53 loss to Bloomsburg, Ryan contributed seven points and five rebounds.

Junior Jordan Dominic (Pennridge) scored 13 points in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 85-38 win over Cairn on Wednesday. Sophomores Natasha Matthews (Norristown) and Kristen Fuery (Upper Dublin) contributed nine and eight points respectively. In Monday’s 86-71 loss to DeSales, Matthews scored 15 points.

Colleen Hinde (Wissahickon) scored eight points in Neumann University’s 81-29 win over Cedar Crest College on Saturday.

Junior Brittany Sandone (Souderton) recorded her fourth 20-plus point performance of the year with a game-high 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting in Cabrini College’s 85-63 win over Rosemont College on Saturday. Cabrini is 6-0 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (10-3 overall). Cabrini was recognized on D3hoops.com as one of the best defensive clubs in the nation this week. The Cavaliers are ranked No. 3 in the nation in rebounding margin and No. 8 in both defense and three-point field goal defense.

Ginny Edwards (Central Bucks South) contributed seven points, 10 rebounds and three assists in Wilkes University’s 82-70 win over Delaware Valley College on Wednesday.

Danielle Derr (Upper Dublin) came off the bench to score 10 points and pull down five rebounds in 25th-ranked Bloomsburg’s 80-53 win over Lock Haven on Friday.

Junior guard Daniella Ciccarone (Quakertown) posted her first career double-double as a Bobcat, scoring a season-high 15 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in 17th ranked St. Thomas University’s 73-54 win over Webber International on Friday night. In Saturday’s 67-50 win over Warner, Ciccarone contributed five points and nine rebounds.

Freshman forward Tori Steinberg (Central Bucks South) had nine points on three three-point field goals in Ursinus College’s 52-50 win over Gettysburg on Tuesday.

Sarah Kiely (Council Rock North) pulled down nine rebounds in American University’s 54-45 win over Colgate on Saturday. In last Sunday’s 61-58 loss to Hampton, Kiely contributed five points and four rebounds.

Freshman Carley Kendall (Souderton) contributed six points, three rebounds and two steals off the bench in Washington College’s 61-45 win over Dickinson on Tuesday.

Freshman Alex Wheatley (Council Rock South) contributed seven points, five rebounds, three blocked shots and two assists in Princeton’s 77-47 win over Penn on Saturday.

Freshman Stephanie Knauer (North Penn) reached double figures for the 11th time in 14 games, scoring 13 points while also contributing seven rebounds and two assists in Shippensburg’s 82-50 win over California (Pa.) on Saturday. In Friday’s 74-71 loss to 16th-ranked IUP, Knauer rebounded from early foul trouble that left her scoreless in just five minutes of action in the first half to finish the game with five points and a team-high seven rebounds while playing the entire second half.

MEN’S SWIMMING
Sophomore TJ Schenkel (Council Rock South) posted an NCAA qualifying score on the three-meter board, recording a 321.10 for second place in Penn State’s 171-124 win over Missouri State on Saturday afternoon. 

Sophomore TJ Guminski (Hatboro-Horsham) posted a time of 4:45.36 to win the 400-meter freestyle in Lycoming’s 119-72 win over Lebanon Valley on Saturday.

Ryan Supplee (Hatboro-Horsham) set the team’s second fastest time in the 200 breaststroke with a 2:33.60 in Elizabethtown’s 113-74 loss to McDaniel on Saturday. It was Supplee’s first meet of the year. He also competed in the 200 free and 200 free relay.

La Salle junior Dave Derr (Upper Dublin) claimed first place in the 100 backstroke with a time of 53.07 on Saturday at the Rhode Island Invitational. Teammate Daniel Fitzgerald (Upper Dublin) was part of the 200 medley relay that took first in a time of 1:36.05. The Explorers finished second with a total of 482 points behind Massachusetts with 609 points.

Freshman Kevin Dunigan (North Penn) claimed wins in the 100 butterfly (59.23) and 100 breaststroke (1:06.10) in Washington & Jefferson College’s 61-48 win over Bethany College on Wednesday. In Saturday’s 149-132 loss to Grove City, sophomore Ben Mancini (Springfield) won both long distance freestyle events as he touched first in the 500 (5:08.67) and 1,000 (10:42.40).

WOMEN’S SWIMMING
Jan Ikeda (North Penn)
was part of the 200 free relay’s record-breaking win with a time of 1:57.16 in Lebanon Valley’s 122-76 loss to Lycoming on Saturday. Ikeda won the 50 free with a time of 28.44. In Lebanon Valley’s 130-75 loss to Misericordia on Wednesday night, Ikeda finished first in the 200-IM with a time of 2:34.64 and finished second in the 400 free (4:52.64).

Paige Whitmire (Souderton) accounted for a pair of victories in Penn State’s tri-meet at Arkansas with Missouri State on Saturday. The Souderton grad won back-to-back events when she won the 50 freestyle before bettering the closest competitor in the 100 free by nearly a full second. The senior won the 50 freestyle for the third time this season, posting a time of 23.3. She claimed her first 100 free crown with a time of 50.45. The Nittany Lions claimed a 235-59 win over Missouri State but were edged by Arkansas 151.5-146.5.

Rachel Engelhardt (Hatboro-Horsham) cut nearly two-tenths of a second off her previous best time in the 200 free with a time of 2:07.25 and just missed knocking off Shannon McClellan for the win (2:07.10) in Elizabethtown’s 125-75 loss to McDaniel on Saturday.

Freshman Carolyn Meier (Upper Dublin) was part of Shippensburg’s first place 200 free relay that posted a time of 1:40.20 in the Raiders 114-91 win over Edinboro in a dual meet on Friday. She finished second in the 200 free with a time of 1:58.86, and she also was second in the 100 free with a time of 54.93. Colleen Stiles (North Penn) was part of the second place 200 medley relay that posted a time of 1:58.83. She finished third in the 200 free (2:01.69) and second in the 500 free (5:25.15). Seniors Alayna Ryan (Abington) and Sara Small (Abington) were recognized at a ceremony prior to their final home meet.

Sophomore Chelsea Kozior (Council Rock South) was part of the third place 200 medley relay team that posted a time of 1:59.62 in Ursinus College’s 146-103 win over York (Pa.) on Saturday.

WRESTLING
Junior John Lindquist (Neshaminy) earned a 2-0 decision in Shippensburg’s 33-11 dual meet win over Seton Hill on Wednesday.

Ursinus sophomore Richard Jasinski (Pennridge) finished first at 157 in Saturday’s Wilbert Abele Invitational on Saturday at Ursinus. The Pennridge grad, who came into the tournament nationally ranked, started with a pin over Oneonta’s Spencer Frankel in 2:28 and then defeated Randy Huber of UMBC 15-5. After pinning Nicholas Wilke of Hunter in 3:24 and Tanner Burke of WPI in 4:32, he won the bracket by defeating Dan Graff of Oneonta 6-1. The Bears finished second as a team.

Matt Rappo (Council Rock South) scored a win by decision at 141 pounds in 24th-ranked Bloomsburg’s 19-18 win over 12th-ranked Pitt on Saturday. The win over the Panthers is the second straight win over a ranked team for Bloomsburg, which knocked off then 20th-ranked Maryland on Jan. 5. In Bloomsburg’s 24-9 win over Eastern Michigan on Saturday, Rappo earned a 4-2 decision at 141.

Junior James Vollrath (Council Rock South) earned a 6-4 decision over No. 19 David Cheza of Michigan State in No. 1 Penn State’s 41-0 win over Michigan State in a Big Ten Dual on Sunday. Vollrath’s win sent Penn State into intermission with a 17-0 lead in a match in from of 6,300 fans at sold out Rec Hall.
