MEN’S BASKETBALL
Sophomore Jim Connolly (Souderton) had a game-high 13 rebounds to go along with a team-best 15 points in Philadelphia University’s 75-61 win over Holy Family on Saturday. Freshman Nick Christian (Bensalem) added 12 points and six rebounds.
Sophomore Khalif Wyatt (Norristown) scored nine points in Temple’s 78-66 loss to Duquesne on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 83-55 win over St. Bonaventure, Wyatt – making his second consecutive start – recorded a career high 15 points and handed out a personal best six assists. Senior forward Lavoy Allen (Pennsbury) added 15 points and five rebounds. Temple returned to college basketball’s Top 25 with the release of last week’s polls. The Owls were ranked #19 in the Associated Press. The ESPN/USA Today poll has Temple ranked #23.
Senior Chris McDevitt (Central Bucks West) scored nine points in Widener’s stunning 71-70 win over Lebanon Valley on Saturday, including a foul shot with 11 seconds remaining to pull Widener to within three (68-65). Teammate BJ Smith banked in a 65-foot shot at the buzzer to complete Widener’s rally from a 16-point second-half deficit. In Wednesday’s 82-74 loss at Albright, McDevitt scored 12 points on four three-pointers.
Bruce Kennedy (Wissahickon) scored five points in Cheyney’s 78-75 overtime loss to East Stroudsburg on Wednesday.
Lorenzo Christmas (Norristown) scored 19 points in Bloomsburg’s 89-80 loss to Kutztown on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 91-87 overtime thriller over Millersville, Christmas scored a career high 25 points, connecting on 7-of-14 shots from the field and 7-of-10 from the foul line. He was 4-of-9 from beyond the arc.
Bryan Harrity (Central Bucks South) contributed nine points and three rebounds in Elizabethtown’s 81-76 win over Albright on Saturday.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Princeton senior Addie Micir (Council Rock North) was named the Ivy League Player of the Week and the GoPrincetonTigers.com Athlete of the Week, presented by Coach USA, for the week of Jan. 10. Micir led Princeton to a 2-0 week and scored her 1,000th career point on her way to her second Ivy League Player of the Week honor of the 2010-11 season. The senior guard became just the 18th player in Princeton women’s basketball to reach that mark. On Jan. 4 against LaSalle, Micir finished the game with 17 points, four rebounds, three assists, two steals and one block. On Jan. 8, Micir scored 18 points to lead the Tigers to a win over Penn. The win extended the Tigers’ conference win streak to 20, ranking third in the nation behind Connecticut and Stanford.
Senior Kathryn Stockbower (Upper Dublin) scored a team-high 13 points to go along with a game-high 14 rebounds, good for her 75th career double-double, to lead Swarthmore to a 62-46 win over Dickinson on Saturday. Sophomore Madeline Ross (Central Bucks East) added seven points. In Thursday’s 48-37 loss to Johns Hopkins, Ross scored nine points while Stockbower added six points and six rebounds. It was her first game without a double-double since Dec. 4. In Tuesday’s 55-42 win over McDaniel, Ross turned in a career-best 17-point performance. She dropped three of Swarthmore’s four field goals from outside the arch and went four-for-five from the field to lead the Garnet offense. Stockbower pulled down 10 rebounds and scored 16 points.
Senior Liz Leer (Abington) scored 17 points in American’s 66-59 win over Colgate on Saturday. The win extended the Eagles’ winning streak to 11 games, tying a program record. In Wednesday’s 60-55 overtime win at Bucknell on Wednesday, Leer registered her fourth double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Sophomore Mercedes Harris (Norristown) contributed 14 points and nine rebounds in Montgomery County Community College’s 53-27 win over Sussex Community College on Saturday. In Montco’s 69-11 win over the Community College of Philadelphia on Wednesday, Harris scored a team-high 19 points. In Montco’s 64-47 win over Gloucester County College on Jan. 6, Harris contributed 26 points and 16 rebounds.
Junior Bryn Cotteta (Norristown) contributed 13 points, six assists and three steals in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 72-68 loss at Montclair State on Thursday night.
Brittany McClain (Harry S. Truman) contributed eight points and seven rebounds in East Stroudsburg’s 64-50 win over Cheyney on Wednesday.
Junior Lauren Peters (Central Bucks West) scored a team-high 16 points in #14 Holy Family’s 64-51 loss to Goldey-Beacom in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game on Thursday. Senior Lindsey Tennent (Pennridge) added eight points and a team-high 11 rebounds off the bench. It was the team’s first regular season conference loss in nearly six years.
Taylor Magnus (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored six points in Philadelphia University’s 59-52 loss to the District of Columbia on Sunday. In Tuesday’s 76-61 loss to nationally ranked Holy Family, she contributed eight points, three rebounds and two steals.
Sophomore Shakia Robinson (North Penn) scored six points in UMass’s 81-55 loss to #8 Xavier on Sunday. In the Minutewomen’s 89-63 loss to Richmond on Wednesday, Robinson had six rebounds, including five on the offensive glass.
Freshman forward Sarah Martin (Central Bucks East) scored 13 points and pulled down seven rebounds in Ursinus College’s 57-53 win over Gettysburg on Thursday. Junior guard Jen Sroba (Council Rock North) added seven points, including a foul shot that put Ursinus on top 56-53 with 12 seconds remaining.
Cabrini freshman guard Brittany Sandone (Souderton) was voted the CabriniAthletics.com Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of Jan. 3-9. Sandone averaged 10 points and 4.5 rebounds in a week that saw Cabrini go 1-1. She is the Blue and White’s leading scorer through 12 games, averaging 9.2 points per contest. She also leads the team in assists (19) and is shooting nearly 87 percent from the free throw line. In Monday’s 53-39 loss to Marywood, Sandone scored five points.
Erin Gold (Council Rock North) contributed eight points and three rebounds in Wesleyan’s 60-48 loss to Trinity on Friday.
Mashira Newman (Upper Dublin) scored a game-high 19 points and dished out six assists in #16 Millersville’s 67-52 win over Mansfield on Saturday. Teammate Sophia Waters (Norristown) added 12 points. For Mansfield, Nicole Pender (Cheltenham) scored a team-high 12 points and handed out five assists. In Millersville’s 75-58 loss to Bloomsburg, Waters scored 12 points while Newman added 10. Newman also had six assists.
Freshman Kelsey Ryan (Neshaminy) contributed four points and four rebounds as well as three steals in Lock Haven’s 58-44 loss to Gannon on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 76-59 loss to Mercyhurst, Heather McHugh (Norristown) contributed six points, three assists and two steals. She was two-for-two from the charity stripe.
Sophomore Danielle Derr (Upper Dublin) scored four points in Bloomsburg’s 87-84 win over Kutztown on Saturday. The Huskies improved to 10-4 on the season (2-0 PSAC East). In Wednesday’s 75-58 upset win over #16 Millersville, Derr scored six points.
Freshman Victoria Mazzeo (Neshaminy) scored four points in Chestnut Hill’s 77-52 win over Georgian Court on Thursday.
FOOTBALL
East Stroudsburg University’s Matt Freed (Souderton) headlines the linebackers on the 2010 Football Gazette All-Super Region 1 team as released by the Don Hansen Football Committee. He is a repeat first team selection and has been named to All-America teams by the Associated Press and Daktronics. He will advance to the national ballot for the Football Gazette Division II All-America team, which will be announced later this month. He is one of four first team linebackers on the All-Region squad. The Warriors’ linebacker is a three-time All-America selection on the Daktronics Division II and AP Little All-America teams and finished his career ranked third in ESU history with 399 tackles and fifth with 22.5 sacks. He had 120 tackles, 14.0 tackles for a loss and 7.5 sacks as a senior.
MEN’S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD
Penn State freshman Nick Scarpello (Central Bucks West) finished second in the 3000-meter run with a time of 8:20.44 at Saturday’s Nittany Lion Challenge. A week earlier at the Penn State Relays, Scarpello ran the anchor leg for the 4xMile relay team that finished first with a time of 17:24.16.
Millersville freshman Steve Eister (Pennridge) finished fifth by jumping a distance of 6.66 meters in the New York Road Runners Meet on Saturday. Senior Jorrel Nugent (Abington) finished sixth with a jump of 6.64 meters. Junior Keith Ogden (Cheltenham) finished 16th in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.92 seconds. He finished 17th in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.18 seconds. Millersville finished 13th among 17 schools.
WOMEN’S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD
East Stroudsburg’s Kayla Littrell (William Tennent) finished 23rd in the 200 meter dash with a time of 29.92 at the Kutztown Invitational on Friday night.
MEN’S SWIMMING
Senior Lloyd Tannenbaum (Upper Dublin) won the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:19.83 and the 100 freestyle with a time of 49.30 in Ursinus College’s 142-120 win over York on Saturday.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING
Sophomore Megan Lafferty (Upper Dublin) was part of the University of Maryland’s winning 200 medley team (1:42.83) and 200 free relay team (1:32:52) in a tri-meet against Pittsburgh, Penn State and Villanova. She was also part of the 400 medley relay that finished second with a time of 3:47.75 and the second place 400 free relay that finished with a time of 3:23.73. Individually, Lafferty finished third in the 50 with a time of 23.46. The Terps defeated Pittsburgh (212-141) and Villanova (245-106) and fell to Penn State (205-146). Penn State sophomore Paige Whitmire (Souderton) was part of the Nittany Lions’ winning 400-medley relay that posted a time of 3:44.27. Whitmire also won the 100 backstroke with a time of 55.43. The Nittany Lions swept the event, defeating Maryland (205-146), Pittsburgh (234-117) and Villanova (278-73).
Senior Amy Rowland (Upper Moreland) finished first in the 50 free with a time of 26.32 in East Stroudsburg’s tri-meet against Ramapo and the College of St. Elizabeth on Saturday. Rowland was also part of the 200 medley relay team that finished third (2:02.97). ESU swept the meet. In Thursday’s 133-120 loss to CW Post, Rowland was part of ESU’s winning 200 free relay team that posted a time of 1:45.63. She also was part of the second place 200 medley relay that finished with a time of 1:55.80. Rowland finished third in the 200 free (2:08.47) and third in the 50 free (26.18).
WRESTLING
Senior Jesse Dunn (Harry S. Truman) delivered a pin at 165 in East Stroudsburg’s 24-22 loss to Wilkes on Thursday night.
