MEN’S BASKETBALL
Sophomore Jim Connolly (Souderton) scored a team-high 23 points in Philadelphia University’s 73-70 overtime win over Assumption on Thursday. Teammate Eddie DiRugeris (Pennsbury) added nine points, four assists and two rebounds. In Wednesday’s 70-58 loss to Stonehill College, Connelly scored a team-high 15 points. DiRugeris added eight points. The game was a rematch of last year’s NCAA Division II Basketball East Regional.
Senior Lavoy Allen (Pennsbury) scored a season-high 22 points in #25 Temple’s 78-74 loss to #8 Villanova in a Big 5 battle on Thursday night. Allen, who connected on 6-of-9 shots from the field, also pulled down nine rebounds. His trey with 2.3 seconds to play made it a 76-74 game.
Jaymes Miller (Abington) scored 10 points in Millersville’s 76-69 loss to Ashland on Sunday.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Senior Ashley Gale (Cheltenham) scored a career-high 31 points, including six three-pointers in LaSalle’s 87-65 loss at Lehigh on Sunday. Gale was a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line as she broke her previous career high of 27 set on Dec. 8, 2007, versus Quinnipiac. Her 31 points also marked the first 30-plus performance by an Explorer since Feb. 20, 2008. Gale also registered a game-high six steals. In LaSalle’s 73-53 loss to Liberty on Wednesday in the consolation game of the Terrapin Classic at Maryland’s Comcast Center, Gale scored 19 points. She buried 6-of-12 shots from beyond the arc, and her six treys set a new season mark for threes in a game, besting her own mark of five set on three separate occasions. She also pulled down four rebounds, dished out four assists and registered a game-high five steals while playing all 40 minutes. In Tuesday’s 83-45 opening round loss to nationally-ranked Maryland, Gale had 14 points with half of those coming in the first five minutes of the second half. She went a perfect 6-for-6 from the foul line.
Sophomore Shakia Robinson (North Penn) contributed eight points and eight rebounds in the University of Massachusetts’ 83-70 loss to Harvard on Sunday afternoon.
Freshman Shayla Felder (Cheltenham) scored seven points in Dowling’s 68-57 loss to #24 Bentley in the second round of the Southern New Hampshire University Holiday Classic on Thursday. In Wednesday’s opening round 50-46 loss to Southern New Hampshire, Felder contributed nine points and three assists.
Senior Addie Micir (Council Rock North) scored 15 points in Princeton’s 71-63 win over Wake Forest on Friday. She also had a team-high six rebounds and a team-best five assists and added two steals. Micir is now just three points away from the 1,000-point plateau for her career. In Wednesday’s 67-61 win over Davidson, Micir scored a team-high 16 points and also had seven rebounds and four assists.
Senior Liz Leer (Abington) contributed 14 points and three rebounds in American University’s 64-60 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore on Sunday afternoon. On Friday, Leer scored a game-high 20 points to lead American University to a 56-47 win over Brown to claim the title in the Hawk Holiday Classic in West Long Branch, N.J. Leer, who connected on 8-of-15 shots, also had seven rebounds. She was selected as the tournament’s most valuable player after averaging 15.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in wins over Binghamton and Brown. The win was the seventh straight as AU concluded a perfect 6-0 month of December.  In American’s 58-32 win over Binghamton in the opening round of the tournament, Leer contributed 11 points and four rebounds.
Erin Gold (Council Rock North) contributed 13 points in Wesleyan’s 52-49 win over UC-Santa Cruz in a game played at Cal Lutheran on Friday in the Best Western Classic. She also had three rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Junior guard Sophia Waters (Norristown) recorded a double-double in 17th-ranked Millersville’s 75-59 win over Merrimack on Sunday, scoring 11 points and pulling down a career-high 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard Mashira Newman (Upper Dublin) buried a career-high four three-pointers to add to her 18 points. She also nabbed a game-high five steals. Millersville is 7-1 on the season.
Senior guard Taylor Magnus (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored seven points in Philadelphia University’s 74-70 non-conference win over Kutztown on Thursday.
Freshman Kelsey Ryan (Neshaminy) contributed four points, three rebounds and two assists off the bench in Lock Haven’s 85-72 loss to Pitt-Johnstown on Thursday.
MEN’S SOCCER
Senior Ryan Richter (William Tennent) was named to the National Soccer Coaches’ Association of America (NSCAA) First Team Academic All-America squad. It is the highest academic honor bestowed by the national organization. Only 16 Division I players nationally were named Academic All-America. Richter’s All-American honor capped off an award-winning season. The Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year and Student-Athlete of the Year was the offensive force behind to the Explorers’ run to the Atlantic 10 title game. He scored a league-best 14 goals with seven of those being game winners. He will be honored on Jan. 15 at the annual All-American luncheon held as part of the 2011 NSCAA Convention.
WRESTLING
East Stroudsburg senior Jesse Dunn (Harry S. Truman) suffered a pair of losses by decision at 165 (6-1, 6-5) in the Wilkes Open on Tuesday. ESU finished fourth in the tournament.
