MEN’S BASKETBALL
Bloomsburg University’s Lorenzo Christmas (Norristown) has been named the PSAC Eastern Division Freshman of the Week for the period ending Jan. 16. Christmas averaged 22 points and 4.5 rebounds to help the Huskies to a 1-1 week last week. He shot 58.3 percent from the floor (14-for-24), including 7-of-15 from three-point range (46.7 percent) and made 9-of-15 free throws. Christmas scored a career-high 25 points, including four three’s, and grabbed four rebounds to help Bloomsburg rally from an 18-point first-half deficit to top Millersville. He then scored 19 points and had five rebounds in a loss to Kutztown. For the season, Christmas is averaging 9.8 points and 2.0 rebounds per game and leads the Huskies with 22 three-pointers.
Christmas scored 15 points in Bloomsburg’s 93-73 win over Cheyney on Saturday. For Cheyney, Bruce Kennedy (Wissahickon) contributed seven points. In Wednesday’s 73-70 loss to Millersville, Kennedy scored 10 points. In Bloomsburg’s 74-42 loss to Shippensburg on Wednesday, Christmas contributed eight points.
Khalif Wyatt (Norristown) came off the bench to contribute 19 points in Temple’s 88-77 loss to Xavier on Saturday. On Wednesday, Wyatt propelled Temple to its first Big 5 win of the season when the Owls defeated rival Penn 73-56. The sophomore guard came off the bench and set a career-best with a game-high 27 points, becoming the seventh different player this season to lead the Owls in scoring. Wyatt’s 27-point performance (9-for-13, 4-for-6 3 ptr) is the second best individual effort of the season for the Owls. Senior forward Lavoy Allen (Pennsbury) was a presence in the paint, posting a career-high six blocks.
Sophomore Jim Connolly (Souderton) scored 13 points and teammate Nick Christian (Bensalem) added 10 points in Philadelphia University’s 74-61 loss to Chestnut Hill on Wednesday night.
Freshman forward Connor Poston (Hatboro-Horsham) contributed six points and four rebounds in Gettysburg’s 76-73 win over Haverford on Saturday. With nine seconds remaining, sophomore guard Derek Brooks (North Penn) sank one-of-two free throws to give Gettysburg a 75-70 lead.
Senior Dan DelConte (Wissahickon) scored 22 points in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 93-66 win over Neumann University on Monday night. In Gwynedd’s 81-58 CSAC win over Maryland the preceding Thursday, DelConte contributed 12 points and five assists.
Senior Bryan Harrity (Central Bucks South) contributed eight points and 11 rebounds in Elizabethtown’s 76-75 overtime win over Widener on Saturday. Widener senior Chris McDevitt (Central Bucks West) contributed 10 points and four assists. In Wednesday’s 65-66 win over Lycoming, Harrity scored 11 points and pulled down four rebounds.
Lavail Owens(Wissahickon) contributed 11 points in Mansfield’s 76-70 win over East Stroudsburg on Wednesday night.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Sophomore Mercedes Harris (Norristown) scored 29 points and pulled down 21 rebounds in Montgomery County Community College’s 83-56 win over Bucks County Community College on Thursday.
Sophomore guard Ashley Rosario (Harry S. Truman) contributed 10 points and four assists in Goldey-Beacom’s 65-52 loss to Caldwell College on Saturday night.
Taylor Magnus (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored 15 points in Philadelphia University’s 76-60 win over Chestnut Hill College on Wednesday.
Nicole Pender (Cheltenham) had 16 points and 11 assists to lead Mansfield to a 74-62 win over East Stroudsburg on Wednesday night. Redshirt junior forward Brittany McClain (Harry S. Truman) scored a career-high 25 points for the Warriors. She scored 16 of her 25 points in the second half. On Saturday, McClain scored a team-high 12 points in East Stroudsburg’s 69-52 loss to Kutztown.
University of Massachusetts sophomore Shakia Robinson (North Penn) turned in quite a performance in her team’s trip to Philadelphia on Saturday afternoon for an Atlantic 10 contest against St. Joe’s. Robinson paced UMass with 25 points, shooting 12-for-21 from the field, grabbing a team-best eight rebounds and handing out four assists, but it wasn’t enough as the Minutewomen fell to the Hawks 72-68.
Senior Kathryn Stockbower (Upper Dublin) scored 17 points and pulled down eight rebounds in Swarthmore’s 60-46 loss to Ursinus on Saturday. On Wednesday, Stockbower recorded her 77th career double-double, scoring 11 points and pulling down a game-high 18 rebounds in Swarthmore’s 62-41 loss to Haverford. On Monday, Stockbower contributed 11 points and 11 rebounds in Swarthmore’s 72-47 win over Gettysburg.
In Ursinus College’s 60-46 win over Swarthmore on Saturday, senior guard Jaclyn Hilf (Upper Dublin) contributed 14 points while freshman forward Sarah Martin (Central Bucks East) added 10 points and nine rebounds. In Wednesday’s 61-59 loss to Muhlenberg, Hilf scored 17 points while Martin added 10.
Senior Liz Leer (Abington) contributed 11 points, four rebounds and two blocks shots in American’s 84-53 win over Holy Cross on Saturday. It was her 10th consecutive double-digit scoring performance, and it was the 14th consecutive home win for American. On Wednesday, Leer scored 12 points in American’s 64-50 loss to Army, connecting on four-of-six shots from the field. She added five rebounds and a career-best five steals. The loss snapped an 11-game winning streak for American.
Freshman Taylour Alston (North Penn) pulled down seven rebounds in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 65-56 win over Baptist Bible on Thursday night. In Monday’s 56-52 loss to Neumann, junior Bryn Cotteta (Norristown) scored six points. The loss was the first in Colonial States Athletic Conference play for the Griffins (7-5).
Freshman Brittany Sandone (Souderton) scored 11 points in Cabrini’s 71-62 loss to Centenary College on Saturday. In Monday’s 75-41 win over Cedar Crest College, Sandone matched a career-best with 16 points, including 13 in the first half. She shot 5-for-9 from the field overall and knocked down 4-of-6 three-point attempts.
Mashira Newman (Upper Dublin) led all scorers with 19 points and dished out a game-high five assists in Millersville’s 81-59 win over West Chester on Saturday. As a result of the win, the Marauders improved to 3-1 in PSAC play (13-3 overall). In Wednesday’s 57-41 win over Cheyney, Newman and teammate Sophia Waters (Norristown) each scored 11 points.
Freshman Kelsey Ryan (Neshaminy) contributed nine points and four rebounds in Lock Haven’s 79-78 loss to Edinboro on Saturday. Teammate Heather McHugh (Norristown) added eight points and two assists. In Lock Haven’s 71-47 win over Slippery Rock on Wednesday, McHugh had eight points and three assists while Ryan added seven points and three rebounds.
Danielle Derr (Upper Dublin) contributed four points in Bloomsburg’s 81-43 win over Cheyney on Saturday.
FOOTBALL
Sophomore placekicker Brandon McManus (North Penn) was named to the 2010 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Football Team. McManus was a 2010 All-MAC selection by Phil Steele. Earning MAC Specialist of the Week honors following the Villanova game, he played in all 12 games and finished the season as the team’s scoring leader with 70 points. He made 31-of-32 extra points. Also cited on the 2010 Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, McManus has a 3.10 GPA in kinesiology. The team is selected by the sports information offices of the 28 area institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area.
East Stroudsburg redshirt senior Matt Freed (Souderton) was named to the PSAC Fall Top 10 for athletic and academic achievements for the second straight year. Freed, a history major with a 3.76 GPA, had one of the most distinguished careers in ESU football history. The outside linebacker is the only Warrior to earn three All-America honors from the same organization after being named to the Daktronics Division II and AP Little All-America teams for the third straight season in 2010. He finished his career ranked third at ESU with 399 career tackles and fifth with 22.5 sacks.
MEN’S SWIMMING
Senior Lloyd Tannenbaum (Upper Dublin) was part of the winning 400 medley relay (3:44.52) in Ursinus College’s 120.5-84.5 loss to Franklin & Marshall on Saturday afternoon.
Junior Sean Corcoran (Pennsbury) was a member of the winning 400 medley relay team (3:41.65) in Widener’s 76-58 win over Elizabethtown on Saturday.
Ken Wiest (Abington) continued his impressive rookie season by picking up wins in both the 50 free (23.13) and 100 free (51.57) in Elizabethtown’s 117-60 loss to Albright on Tuesday night.
Brendan Magarity (Upper Dublin) finished first in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:56.79 in Millersville’s 211-120 win over Southern Connecticut on Saturday. Teammate Calvin Starosta (Upper Dublin) finished second in the 200 back with a time of 2:00.71.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING
Sophomore Megan Lafferty (Upper Dublin) won the 100 free (52.12) and 100 fly (56.04) in Maryland’s win over West Virginia on Saturday. She also was part of the winning 200 medley relay (1:46.61) and 200 free relay (1:35.84).
Sophomore Paige Whitmire (Souderton) was part of the second place 200 medley relay (1:45.10) in Penn State’s 156-73 win over St. Bonaventure on Saturday afternoon. She finished third in the 100 fly.
Julie Strulson (Pennsbury) recorded a season best time in the 200 backstroke in Elizabethtown’s 104-95 loss to Widener on Saturday, finishing fourth in that event. In Elizabethtown’s 101-94 loss to Albright on Wednesday, Abby Mitchell (Council Rock North) picked up a win in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:28.51.
Amanda Thomas (William Tennent) swam the 200 individual medley for the first time this season and notched first place with a time of 2:26.43 in Millersville’s 117-80 win over Bridgeport on Saturday. She also won the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:24.23. Christina Neville (Souderton) was part of the first place 200 medley relay that finished in a time of 2:03.61. Millersville’s second relay squad, which included Victori DeTample (Pennsbury), finished second. Katelyn Brenner (Norristown) finished second in the 1000 free with a time of 12:13.66. In Friday’s 118-81 win over York, Thomas picked up a second place finish in the 200 free with a season-best time of 2:05.36. She was followed by DeTample in third (2:08.46). Thomas claimed third in the 100 back with a time of 1:09.30. Neville finished fourth in the 50 free (27.57).
Senior Amy Rowland (Upper Moreland) was part of the winning 200 medley relay with a time of 1:48.58 in East Stroudsburg’s 120-85 loss to Bloomsburg. She also was part of the 200 free relay that finished second with a time of 1:45.23. Rowland finished fifth in the 200 free (2:06.67).
Madeline Barlow (Pennsbury) finished third in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:17.22 for Bloomsburg in Saturday’s meet at Drexel that also included Shippensburg. Mel Redican (Upper Dublin) was part of the 200 medley relay team that took third with a time of 1:54.67. Julia DeVincent (Upper Dublin) was part of the 400 free relay that finished second with a time of 3:43.74. Bloomsburg defeated Shippensburg 151-110 but lost to Drexel 155-106.
MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Bloomsburg University’s Ryan Dickerson (Souderton) finished second in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.07 seconds in Saturday’s Lehigh University Invite. Dickerson had reached the finals with a sixth place finish in the prelims. He also competed in the 200 meter dash and took ninth in 23.78 seconds. Bryan Hennessey (Pennridge) was part of the Huskies’ 4x400 relay that finished fifth with a time of 3:34.76. Sean Duffy (Council Rock South) was part of the 4x800 relay that finished fifth with a time of 8:33.63.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Senior Jess Rhyner (Quakertown) was the only member of the Millersville women’s track team to represent the Marauders at the Mountain Hawk Multi at Lehigh University on Friday. In day one of the event, Rhyner placed third out of eight competitors in the women’s indoor pentathlon. She took first in the high jump with a height of 1.61 meters, besting her season’s best of 1.52 meters. Despite a sixth place finish in the 60 meter hurdles, she ran a time of 10.20 seconds, cutting almost five-tenths of a second off her previous best of the year.
Lock Haven’s Vanita Moses (Neshaminy) was second in the women’s weight throw with a mark of 53-7 at the Lehigh University Mountain Hawk Invite on Saturday. Her throw is a NCAA provisional mark.
Lauren Bond (North Penn) and Martina Drew (Neshaminy) were part of Bloomsburg’s 800 meter relay team that finished fifth with a time of 10:16.48 at the Lehigh University Hawk Invite on Saturday.
East Stroudsburg’s Kayla Latrell (William Tennent) finished 33rd in the 200 meter dash with a time of 29.51 at Saturday’s Bucknell Heptagonal on Saturday.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Justin Brubaker (Souderton) contributed 24 kills, eight digs, three aces and two blocks in #6 Philadelphia Biblical’s 3-2 loss to #5 Rivier College on Saturday. Noah Prickett (Pennsbury) had 12 kills and 11 digs while Jon Rose (Central Bucks West) contributed five kills and Ethan Mawhinney (Neshaminy) added four kills. That same day Philadelphia Biblical defeated Vassar 3-1. Brubaker once against had 24 kills to go along with eight digs while Prickett had 12 kills and 10 digs. Mawhinney added six kills and five block assists and Rose had five kills and three block assists.
Stevenson freshman Austin Jacoby (Pennridge) was named Most Valuable Player of the SUNYIT Invitational while the Mustangs started the season with four consecutive wins for the second straight year, posting victories over SUNYIT (3-1) and Bard (3-0) on Sunday to capture the team title. Jacoby earned MVP honors after totaling a tournament-best 71 kills and a .395 hitting percentage. He also ranked second on the team with 23 digs and added five total blocks. In Sunday's two wins, he had 27 kills and eight digs, committing just two errors in 49 attempts for a .510 hitting percentage. He had 15 kills with no errors in 27 attempts versus SUNYIT while adding five digs before posting 12 kills and three digs against Bard. In Saturday's wins over Lasell (3-1) and Sage (3-0), Jacoby contributed 44 kills, 15 digs, five total blocks and his first career double-double. In the win over Lasell in Jacoby's first career game, he had 26 kills and 10 digs and three total blocks. It was the most kills by a Mustang since Jason Matkowski had 26 in a five-set loss to Eastern Mennonite on March 27, 2010. Jacoby posted a .337 hitting percentage over the two games. He had 18 kills, five digs and two total blocks versus Sage.
WRESTLING
Sophomore Teddy Conrad (Central Bucks West) pinned his opponent at 197 in Ursinus College’s quad match that saw the Bears defeat Johns Hopkins (29-12) and Gettysburg (31-12) to remain a perfect 6-0 in dual meets. A week earlier, Conrad won his bracket at 197, defeating Alec Pence of UMBC in the first round of the Homecoming Invitational by an 11-8 decision before taking a 14-6 major decision over Stephen Provenzano of Oneonta State in the championship match. Ursinus finished first in the seven-team invitational.
