MEN’S BASKETBALL
Freshman guard Whis Grant (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored 14 points in East Stroudsburg’s 69-64 win over Shippensburg on Saturday. Grant connected on 6-of-8 shots from the field. In Wednesday’s 88-76 win over Millersville, Grant contributed 17 points. The freshman guard has scored at least 17 points in seven of his first 18 games and is the Warriors’ leading scorer with a 13.9 PPG average.
Lorenzo Christmas (Norristown) contributed nine points and six rebounds in Lock Haven’s 70-64 loss to West Chester.
Sophomore guard Jesse Krasna (Pennsbury) had 12 points in Ursinus College’s 75-72 win over Swarthmore on Saturday.
Cameron Prince (Hatboro-Horsham) scored 16 points in Lebanon Valley’s 74-61 loss to Elizabethtown on Wednesday.
CJ Aiken (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored 13 points and added four blocks in St. Joe’s 84-80 loss to Penn on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 68-55 loss to Xavier, Aiken contributed 13 points and three blocks.
Julian Bond (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored 10 points in Lock Haven’s 68-65 loss to Clarion last Wednesday.
Sophomore guard Kenny Gula (Quakertown) scored 16 points in Moravian’s 84-80 overtime win over Juniata on Friday. In Moravian’s 69-60 loss to Drew University last Saturday, Gula had six points.
Gwynedd-Mercy senior guard Dan DelConte (Wissahickon) was honored as the Sam Cozen Player of the Week by the Philadelphia Area Small College Coaches Association for the week ending Jan. 17. DelConte leads the CSAC in scoring (21.5 PPG) and is ranked in the top 20 in Division III in that category. He has been instrumental in the Griffins’ success as the team is 10-5 and 5-3 in conference play. He has posted two 30-plus point performances and has been the leading scorer in 10 of the 15 games this season. DelConte has been honored by the CSAC in its weekly awards three times and was named the MVP of the Harold J. Brodie Tournament at RIT in November that saw the Griffins claim the championship. The Philadelphia Area Small College Coaches Association honors area small college basketball players not only for the performance on the court but also for their leadership and their academic success.
DeConte led all scorers with 27 points on 8-of-13 shooting in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 75-71 loss to Rosemont on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 78-73 loss to #10 Cabrini, DelConte was one of four Griffins in double figures, scoring a game-high 15 points and pulling down six rebounds with three assists. In Monday’s 80-71 win over Immaculata, DelConte scored 22 of his game-high 28 points in the second half. He was a perfect 11-for-11 from the foul line and also dished out four assists.
Junior Khalif Wyatt (Norristown) scored 20 points in Temple’s 73-60 win over Maryland on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 78-70 win over La Salle, Wyatt scored 12 points.
Penn State Abington freshman Mike Marvin (Hatboro-Horsham) was named the Division II-South Region Player of the Week for the week ending Jan. 17. He also earned NEAC Student-Athlete of the Week honors. Marvin averaged 23.5 points and 13.5 rebounds per game while shooting 88 percent from the floor in two conference victories for the Nittany Lions. The freshman scored game highs of 28 points and 14 rebounds in an overtime win over SUNY IT (113-102). Marvin sent the game into the extra session by scoring the game-tying layup late in the second half. Marvin also scored 19 points, collecting a game-high 13 rebounds in a 77-67 win over Cazenovia.
Marvin posted his 10th double-double of the season in Penn State Abington’s 71-68 win over Penn State Berks on Wednesday, finishing with 15 points and 19 rebounds.
Sophomore Fran Rafferty (Upper Merion) scored 17 points in #10 Cabrini’s 93-70 win at Baptist Bible College on Saturday. In Thursday’s 78-73 win over Gwynedd-Mercy, Goran Dulac (Pennsbury) contributed 13 points and eight rebounds while Rafferty added nine points, seven rebounds and four assists.
Junior guard Derek Brooks (North Penn) scored a season-high nine points while teammate Connor Poston (Hatboro-Horsham) contributed a career-high six points and a game-high eight rebounds in Gettysburg’s 65-54 win over Haverford on Saturday.
Guard Jim Connolly (Souderton) scored 16 points and Nick Christian (Bensalem) finished with 11 rebounds, eight points and eight assists in Philadelphia University’s 85-66 win over Bloomfield on Saturday. The win was the ninth in a row for the Rams, who improved to 12-4 overall and 7-0 against the CACC. In Thursday’s 59-57 win over Washington Adventist, Connolly scored 15 points. In Monday’s 56-42 win over Chestnut Hill, Connolly scored seven of his team-high 16 points during a 19-4 run over the final 6:57.
Marcus Badger (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored five points in Randolph-Macon’s 86-80 overtime win over Hampden-Sydney on Saturday.
Dan Werth (Souderton) contributed five points and five rebounds in Eastern University’s 80-75 win over DeSales on Saturday.
Nick Reisig (Council Rock North) contributed seven points and a pair of assists in King’s College’s 66-56 loss to Wilkes on Wednesday.
Justin Van Houten (Central Bucks East) scored a career-high 20 points in Penn State Altoona’s 69-68 loss to Pitt-Greensburg on Wednesday.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Danielle Derr (Upper Dublin) came off the bench to contribute six points and five rebounds in Bloomsburg’s 79-65 loss to West Chester on Saturday.
Brittany Kaewell (Central Bucks South) contributed 12 points, four rebounds and three assists in Penn State Altoona’s 70-51 loss to Mount Aloysius.
Shannon Barlow (Neshaminy) contributed five points and five rebounds in Delaware Valley’s 71-57 win over Manhattanville on Wednesday.
Calla Miller (Central Bucks South) tied her career high with five assists in Haverford’s 71-57 loss to Swarthmore on Wednesday. In Haverford’s 62-41 win over Arcadia on Monday, Miller contributed six rebounds and four assists.
Junior Shakia Robinson (North Penn) scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds for UMass in its 80-55 loss to Dayton on Wednesday.
Lauren Peters (Central Bucks West) tied her career high seven assists in Holy Family’s 81-67 win over Goldey-Beacom on Wednesday. She also scored six points and grabbed four rebounds. Ashley Rosario (Harry S. Truman) scored 14 points for Goldey-Beacom.
Daniella Ciccarone (Quakertown) contributed 12 points in Walsh’s 80-74 loss to Hillsdale on Saturday. In Tuesday’s 58-54 loss to Daemen, Ciccarone finished with nine points and five rebounds. She was a perfect 7-for-7 at the foul line.
Gabrielle Benedict (Central Bucks West) collected nine points, eight rebounds and four steals in Penn State Abington’s 77-52 loss to SUNY IT last Sunday. Jessica Schmidt (Abington) added 11 points and six rebounds.
Mashira Newman (Upper Dublin) scored a game-high 15 points and also had five assists in Millersville’s 63-57 loss to Kutztown on Saturday. Ten of her points came in the final eight minutes of the second half. In Millersville’s 74-53 win over East Stroudsburg on Wednesday, Newman led the Marauders with 17 points and also had a season-high eight assists. Sophia Waters (Norristown) connected on 5-of-10 shots from the field for 12 points. In last Monday’s 66-49 win over Cheyney, Newman contributed 13 points, five steals and three blocks.
Kelsey Ryan (Neshaminy) scored eight points and pulled down six rebounds in Lock Haven’s 80-57 loss to California (Pa.) on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 85-70 win over Clarion, Heather McHugh (Norristown) scored 19 points, which included five three-pointers.
Gwynedd-Mercy sophomore Natasha Matthews (Norristown) was selected as the Colonial States Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending Jan. 15. Matthews came off the bench to help lead the Griffins to a pair of CSAC victories last week, averaging 17.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and shooting 15-for-19 (.789) from the field. In the Griffins’ win over Notre Dame (Md.), she scored a game-high 17 points on 8-for-9 shooting while adding six rebounds in just 17 minutes of play. Two nights later, in an 84-71 win over Centenary, Matthews scored 17 points on 7-for-10 shooting while adding seven rebounds and three steals in 24 minutes. She has appeared in all 15 games this season, averaging 5.8 points and 3.7 rebounds per game and helping Gwynedd-Mercy to a 9-6 record.
Senior Bryn Cotteta (Norristown) scored a game-high 22 points, which included four three-pointers, in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 96-45 win over Cedar Crest on Saturday. Matthews added 11 points. In the Griffins’ 50-40 win over Cabrini on Wednesday, Cotteta chipped in five points, five rebounds, six steals and three assists. Sophomore Taylour Alston (North Penn) pulled down seven rebounds and added four points. In Monday’s 60-58 win over Immaculata, Matthews contributed 15 points and 14 rebounds off the bench in a game that featured 10 lead changes.
Sam Simononis (Pennridge) scored 14 points in Vermont’s 67-58 loss to UMBC on Sunday.
Sarah Kiely (Council Rock North) contributed six points and six rebounds in American University’s 40-39 win over Army on Saturday.
MEN’S SWIMMING
Calvin Starosta (Upper Dublin) was part of West Chester’s first place 400 medley relay team that finished with a time of 3:33.72 and also finished first in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:01.32.
Ryan Supplee (Hatboro-Horsham) finished third in the 200 breastroke (2:37.93), second in the 200 IM (2:24.55) and sixth in the 100 free (54.87) in Elizabethtown’s 150-84 loss to Widener on Saturday.
Dan Fitzgerald (Upper Dublin) finished second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 53.43 in La Salle’s 163-133 win over Fordham on Saturday. He also finished fifth in the 100 free with a time of 50.02 and was part of the Explorers’ first place 200 medley relay time that posted a time of 1:36.53. He also was part of the second place 400 free relay (3:10.10). Teammate Dave Derr (Upper Dublin) finished fifth in the 100 back (55.39) and was part of the third place 200 medley relay that finished with a time of 1:39.04. He also was part of the fifth place 400 free relay (3:23.57).
Freshman T.J. Guminski (Hatboro-Horsham) picked up a pair of wins in Lycoming’s tri-meet wins over King’s (78-42) and FDU-Floram (92-21) on Wednesday. He won the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:17.36 and the 200 IM with a time of 2:11.22. In Saturday’s 159-66 win over Arcadia, Guminski earned a win in the 100 breast with a time of 1:06.55.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING
Junior Meghan Forlini (William Tennent) was part of the fourth place 400 free relay team that posted a time of 3:43.48 in La Salle’s 160-140 loss to Fordham on Saturday. She finished sixth in the 500 free with a time of 5:30.87.
Jan Ikeda (North Penn) set her ninth school record of the season in Lebanon Valley’s 115-76 win over FDU-Florham on Saturday, winning the 200 IM with a time of 2:33.67 to best the old mark of 2:37.66. She also won the 100 back with a time of 1:12.90.
CJ Corcoran (Souderton) was part of the winning 800 free relay that posted a time of 8:07.67 in Washington & Jefferson’s 160-137 loss to Penn State-Behrend on Saturday.
Taylor Berry (Central Bucks East) was part of the winning 200 medley relay that posted a time of 2:00.68 in Lycoming’s 138-11 win over Arcadia on Saturday.
Sophomore Amanda Thomas (William Tennent) captured first place in the 200 free with a season best time of 2:02.40 in Millersville’s 121-84 loss to Lock Haven last Tuesday. She finished second in the 100 free with a time of 56.69, also her season best, and she finished the meet with 17 points. Freshman Ashley Kichline (Souderton) finished second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:03.80, a season best.
Sophomore Alicia Detweiler (Pennridge) was part of Widener’s 200 medley relay that finished first with a time of 1:55.04 in the Pride’s 179.5-79.5 win over Elizabethtown on Saturday. Detweiler finished fourth in both the 100 free (59.87) and 50 free (27.55). Abby Mitchell (Council Rock North) was part of Elizabethtown’s second place 200 medley relay team (2:03.76). Mitchell won the 100 butterfly (1:06.89), finished second in the 500 free (5:35.39) and was third in the 200 free (2:07.39). Teammate Julie Strulson (Pennsbury) finished sixth in the 200 backstroke (2:38.45) and was part of Elizabethtown’s second place 400 free relay team that posted a time of 4:18.12.
Kelsey Tennett (Hatboro-Horsham) won the 1-meter diving competition with a score of 273.89 in West Chester’s 131-96 win over Southern Connecticut State on Saturday. She was second in the 3m springboard competition with a score of 269.99. Teammate Jess Healy (Hatboro-Horsham) finished second in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:15.05, and she was a member of West Chester’s third place 400 medley relay team that finished with a time of 4:09.42. Healy also finished third in the 200 IM with a time of 2:17.63.
University of Maryland junior Megan Lafferty (Upper Dublin) was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Swimming Performer of the Week last Tuesday. The ACC weekly honor is Lafferty’s second this season. Lafferty won two individual events and helped Maryland sweep all four relays to beat Pittsburgh, Villanova and Richmond the preceding weekend. She won both the 100 fly and 50 free as the Terrapins improved to 7-1 in dual meet action this season.
Lafferty finished first in the 100 free (50.60) and 100 fly (55.14) in Maryland’s 202-97 win over West Virginia on Saturday. Freshman Melanie Busch (William Tennent) finished first in the 100 back (56.45) and 50 free (23.63).
Alayna Ryan (Abington) finished third in the 1000 free (11:12.17) in Shippensburg’s 114-91 win over IUP on Friday. Teammate Alyssa Boeggman (Neshaminy) finished sixth in the 50 free (26.02) and sixth in the 100 breast (1:19.08). Colleen Stiles (North Penn) finished fourth in the 100 back (1:03.71).
Freshman Chelsea Kozior (Council Rock South) was part of the winning 200 free that posted a time of 1:43.69 in Ursinus College’s 121-84 loss to F&M on Saturday.
WRESTLING
John Lindquist (Neshaminy) went 2-0 at 157 for Shippensburg, but the Raiders dropped a pair of matches at the 2012 Super Region I Duals hosted by the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown on Saturday. He picked up a 10-2 major decision over Newberry’s Davis Bagwell and defeated American International’s Noah Kail 3-2.
Freshman Richard Jasinksi (Pennridge) earned a tech fall over Joe Fiore in Ursinus College’s 28-13 win over Gettysburg in Saturday’s tri-meet against Gettysburg and Johns Hopkins.
