MEN’S BASKETBALL
East Stroudsburg freshman Whis Grant (Plymouth Whitemarsh) was named the PSAC East Men’s Basketball Freshman of the Week for the second time this season after helping the Warriors to a pair of road wins in divisional play. Grant averaged 15.5 points, 3.0 assists and shot 64.7 percent in two games, with 17 points in an 88-76 win at Millersville and 14 points and an assist in a 69-64 win at Shippensburg. The Warriors’ top scorer with 13.9 points per game, Grant has excelled in road and neutral site competition. He has hit double figures in all eight away games, averaging 17.0 points per game, including 30 points in his ESU debut against No. 6-ranked West Liberty to earn his first PSAC East weekly honor. For the week, Grant shot 11-for-17 from the field, 4-for-8 from long distance and 5-for-6 at the foul line, opening with 12 points in the first half at Millersville. He scored nine points in the second half at Shippensburg, helping ESU overcome a 34-32 halftime deficit, including a run of six straight points early in the half. Grant is shooting 48.8 percent overall and 40.7 percent (33-for-81) from the three-point line and averaging 2.8 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.5 steals. He scored in double figures in 15 of ESU’s first 18 games and led or shared the game-high in scoring nine times.
Grant scored 22 points, 15 in the second half, of East Stroudsburg’s 94-82 win over West Chester on Saturday. It was his fifth 20-point game of the season. In the Warriors’ 70-67 loss to Bloomsburg on Wednesday, Grant scored a team-high 21 points. For Bloomsburg, Lorenzo Christmas (Norristown) scored 12 points and pulled down four rebounds.
Marcus Badger (Plymouth Whitemarsh) dished out nine assists to go along with seven points in Randolph-Macon’s 87-62 win at Roanoke on Wednesday.
Freshman Sam Pygatt (Plymouth Whitemarsh) scored eight points on 4-of-6 shooting to go along with five rebounds in Shippensburg’s 82-75 win over Cheyney.
Senior Dan DelConte (Wissahickon) contributed 19 points and eight assists in Gwynedd-Mercy’s 80-55 win over Marywood on Saturday.
Dan Werth (Souderton) scored a season-high 13 points and also had eight rebounds, three assists and three steals in Eastern’s 71-58 win over Manhattanville College on Saturday.
Guard Jim Connolly (Souderton) scored a game-high 21 points in Philadelphia University’s 62-61 loss to Caldwell on Saturday. He is now 65 points away from scoring 1,000 in his career. Nick Christian (Bensalem) had a team-high nine rebounds to go along with five assists. In Thursday’s 65-54 loss to Goldey-Beacom, Connolly scored nine points while Christian contributed 13 rebounds, seven points, six assists and three steals. AJ Picard (Souderton) scored five points for Goldey-Beacom, which notched its first-ever win at Philadelphia University.
Picard scored 14 points in Goldey-Beacom’s 73-64 win over Wilmington University on Tuesday.
Julian Bond (Plymouth Whitemarsh) connected on a pair of three’s for six points in Lock Haven’s 80-49 loss to Gannon.
Sophomore guard Kenny Gula (Quakertown) tied his career high with 18 points in Moravian’s 95-86 win over The Catholic University of America on Saturday. In Friday’s 68-65 win over Goucher College, Gula had seven points, two boards and two steals.
Due to a foot injury he sustained earlier this season, junior forward Will Barrett (Central Bucks East) will withdraw from Princeton University for the 2011-12 academic year. He plans on returning to the team in the 2012-13 season. Barrett has not played since Nov. 20 when he sustained the foot injury in a game against Lafayette. To that point, he had been averaging 4.3 points and 3.6 rebounds per game.
Mike Marvin (Hatboro-Horsham) had 13 defensive rebounds in Penn State Abington’s 91-78 loss to Gallaudet University on Saturday. In Tuesday’s 103-99 loss to Lancaster Bible, Marvin collected his 10th double-double, scoring a career-high 30 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. In Sunday’s 79-67 loss to Wells College, Marvin finished with 14 points and nine rebounds.
Cameron Prince (Hatboro-Horsham) scored 14 points in Lebanon Valley’s 77-72 loss to Lycoming on Saturday.
Sophomore Fran Rafferty (Upper Merion) pulled down a career-high 14 rebounds to go along with six points and four assists in #8 Cabrini’s 92-71 win at Centenary College. Junior Goran Dulac (Pennsbury) added nine points and five rebounds for the Cavaliers, who improved to 18-1 on the season (12-0 Colonial States Athletic Conference). In Thursday’s 81-74 win over Immaculata, Dulac scored 13 points.
Junior guard Derek Brooks (North Penn) scored a career-best 17 points on 8-of-9 shooting in Gettysburg’s 80-65 win over Swarthmore College on Saturday.
Michael Guldin (Pennridge) contributed a season-high seven points off the bench in DeSales University’s 79-73 win over Muhlenberg last Monday.
Sophomore forward Andrew Stress (Council Rock North) scored nine points in FDU-Florham’s 73-66 come-from-behind win over Delaware Valley on Wednesday in a contest that saw the Devils trail by 12 at the intermission.
Nick Resig (Council Rock North) scored four points in King’s College’s 58-44 loss to DeSales on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 62-60 loss to Misericordia, Resig had six points, four rebounds, two assists and one steal.
Freshman Jaylen Bond (Plymouth Whitemarsh) contributed five points, two rebounds, one steal and one assist in the University of Texas’ 62-55 win over Iowa State last Monday.
Khalif Wyatt (Norristown) scored 10 points in Temple’s 78-60 win over St. Joseph’s in front of a soldout Liacouras Center on Saturday. St. Joe’s CJ Aiken (Plymouth Whitemarsh) contributed eight points and one blocked shot.
Aiken scored 14 points and posted five blocks in St. Joe’s 77-63 win over Dayton on Wednesday.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Senior forward Brittany McClain (Harry S Truman) tied her season-high with 11 points off the bench in East Stroudsburg’s 76-64 loss to Bloomsburg on Wednesday. In Saturday’s 60-58 upset of PSAC East leader West Chester, McClain contributed six points and four rebounds in 27 minutes.
Brittany Kaewell (Central Bucks South) scored 11 points in Penn State Altoona’s 74-72 win over D’Youville College on Saturday.
Colleen Hinde (Wissahickon) scored 10 points in Neumann University’s 78-64 win over Keystone College on Saturday.
Sam Simononis (Pennridge) scored 10 points in Vermont’s 63-36 win over Stony Brook on Saturday.
Sarah Kiely (Council Rock North) scored 13 points in American University’s 80-54 win over Lafayette on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 71-45 win over Bucknell, Kiely had eight points, five rebounds and two steals.
Shannon Barlow (Neshaminy) scored seven points in Delaware Valley’s 81-42 loss to FDU-Florham on Wednesday.
Calla Miller (Central Bucks South) contributed nine points and three rebounds in Haverford College’s 58-55 win over 18th-ranked Muhlenberg College on Wednesday night. The win tied the program record for most in a season (13) and was just the second win in program history over Muhlenberg and the first-ever win on the Mules’ home court.
Daniella Ciccarone (Quakertown) scored 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field in Walsh University’s 95-54 rout of Wilberforce on Tuesday.
Shakia Robinson (North Penn) scored a game-high 20 points and also pulled down eight rebounds in the University of Massachusetts’ 56-54 loss to Fordham on Saturday. Robinson connected on 9-of-14 shots from the floor.
Senior Lauren Peters (Central Bucks West) contributed five points and five steals in Holy Family’s 61-47 win over Bloomfield on Saturday.
Sophomore Brittany Sandone (Souderton) scored 14 points, which included four three-pointers, in Cabrini’s 66-52 loss to Centenary College on Saturday. In Wednesday’s 53-40 loss to Immaculata, Sandone scored nine points. In Monday’s 66-47 loss to Montclair State, Sandone scored 11 points.
Gwynedd-Mercy senior guard Bryn Cotteta (Norristown) was named to the Colonial States Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Honor Roll for the week ending Jan. 22. Cotteta was instrumental offensively and defensively in three CSAC wins last week, helping Gwynedd-Mercy to move into first place in the CSAC South Division. She scored six points and dished our four assists in Gwynedd’s two-point win at Immaculata. In the win over Cabrini, she netted five points with three assists but totaled six steals to lead the defense. Against Cedar Crest, she scored a game-high 22 points on 9-of-10 shooting while collecting four three-pointers. She leads the team in scoring (11.1 PPG), assists (65) and steals (41).
Sophomore guard Jordan Dominic (Pennridge) led Gwynedd-Mercy in scoring with 13 points off the bench while shooting a perfect 4-for-4 from the field in the Griffins’ 81-51 win over Marywood on Saturday. Sophomore Taylour Alston (North Penn) scored 11 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Cotteta contributed six points, seven assists and seven rebounds. In Wednesday’s 70-61 win over Keystone, sophomore Natasha Matthews (Norristown) led the Griffins with 18 points off the bench. Cotteta chipped in 10.
Senior guard Alli Rosati (Central Bucks East) had 16 points, four rebounds and two assists while shooting 6-for-9 from the floor in Ursinus College’s 60-48 win over Dickinson College on Saturday. Senior guard Jen Sroba (Council Rock North) contributed 10 points and seven rebounds. In Wednesday’s 61-43 win over Washington College, Rosati contributed 13 points and four rebounds. Sroba added seven points.
Jessica Schmidt (Abington) contributed 18 points and three assists in Penn State Abington’s 58-47 loss to Gallaudet University on Saturday. In Tuesday’s 60-40 loss to Lancaster Bible College, Gabrielle Benedict (Central Bucks West) pulled down 10 rebounds. Schmidt had nine points and seven assists while Kate Schalck (William Tennent) contributed eight points and five rebounds. In last Sunday’s 67-42 loss to Wells College, Schmidt scored 17 points and was 9-for-13 from the foul line. Benedict collected a season-high 12 rebounds.
Senior Sophia Waters (Norristown) had a career day off the bench in Millersville’s 71-59 win over Mansfield on Saturday, finishing with 18 points – nine in each half, while making a career-high 8-of-13 shots. Waters also finished with a team and season-high four steals. Redshirt junior Mashira Newman (Upper Dublin) scored 14 points and contributed a season-high eight assists. She is now 17 points away from 1,000 career points. In Wednesday’s 75-60 win over Shippensburg, Newman had her fifth straight game in double figures with 15 points, six rebounds and six assists.
Ashley Rosario (Harry S Truman) contributed 14 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and one steal in Goldey-Beacom’s 83-80 win in overtime over Philadelphia University on Thursday. The Lightning’s win snapped Philly U’s six-game winning streak.
Heather McHugh (Norristown) and Kelsey Ryan (Neshaminy) both scored seven points and grabbed four rebounds in Lock Haven’s 73-64 loss to #20 Gannon Saturday. In Wednesday’s 62-49 loss to #18 IUP, McHugh scored 12 points.
MEN’S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD
Freshman Michael Spadaro (Council Rock South) has several of the top performances for the 2011-12 indoor track season for Johns Hopkins. He recorded the second (7.48) and third (7.51) best times in the 60m dash. He also has the second (13.82m) and third best (13.41m) showings in triple jump. His jump of 13.82m is a freshman record. At the University of Delaware's Thomson Invite last Saturday, Spadaro - an aspiring decathlete - took over fifth place in the conference pole vault rankings with a jump of 3.75 meters (12'3.50") while placing second in a field of 16 in the triple jump (13.42 meters - 44'50").
On the opening day of the Bison Open at Bucknell University on Friday, Millersville junior Keith Ogden (Cheltenham) smashed the school record in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.50 seconds, breaking the previous mark of 22.71 set in 1991. This is the third school record Ogden either holds or shares for the indoor season. Despite the broken record, Ogden’s time was still fourth best in the preliminaries.
Through four events of the men’s heptathlon, Zach Kohler (Pennridge) amassed 2,648 points. He placed eighth in the 60-meter dash portion of the event, clocking a time of 7.49 seconds. In the long jump, Kohler took fifth with a height of 6.18 meters. In the shot put, Kohler finished sixth with a 10.58 meter throw. The fourth and final event of the heptathlon on Friday was the high jump where Kohler came in second with a height of 1.98 meters.
MEN’S SWIMMING
Bloomsburg’s Jeremy Frey (Central Bucks East) won the 200 IM with a time of 2:01.68 on day one of the Huskies’ tri-meet at IUP on Friday. He also was part of the 200-free relay that captured fourth place with a time of 1:30.19. On Saturday, Frey finished fifth in the 400 IM with a time of 4:29.29 and sixth in the 100-free with a time of 49.64. Frey and Mark DiLemmo (Central Bucks East) were part of Bloomsburg’s third place 800 free relay that finished with a time of 7:25.85. DiLemmo finished fourth in the 1000 free with a time of 10:28.58. Tim Dorsch (Souderton) finished third in the 200 breast with a time of 2:16.39, which was just 0.23 off the PSAC-qualifying time.
Calvin Starosta (Upper Dublin) finished first in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:01.32 in West Chester’s 130-82 win over Southern Connecticut State University on Jan. 21. He also was part of the first place 400 medley relay. In Friday’s 175-120 loss to Penn, Starosta finished third in the 100 backstroke (52.49) and sixth in the 100 free (49.26).
Freshman Jake Meyers (Council Rock North) finished first in the 500 (5:05.80) and 1650 freestyles (17:49.43) in Washington & Jefferson College’s 86-57 win over Hiram College.
Ryan Supplee (Hatboro-Horsham) was part of the winning 400 medley relay (4:02.12) in Elizabethtown’s 109-68 win over King’s (Pa.) College.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING
CJ Corcoran (Souderton) was a member of Washington & Jefferson’s winning 200 medley relay (1:55.89) and 200 free relay. She also finished first in the 50 free (25.22).
Abby Mitchell (Council Rock North) topped her season best time in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:24.77 in Elizabethtown’s 121-79 win over King’s (Pa.) College on Saturday.
Madeline Barlow (Pennsbury) and Julia DeVincent (Upper Dublin) were members of Bloomsburg’s second place 400-medley relay that posted a time of 4:08.98 in day one of the Huskies’ tri-meet at IUP on Friday.
Freshman Jan Ikeda (North Penn) finished first in the 50 breast (38.74) and 50 fly (29.99) in Lebanon Valley’s 157-104 loss to Messiah on Saturday. She also was part of the winning 200 medley relay (2:12.44).
Ashley Kichline (Souderton) finished first in the 100 backstroke and the 200 backstroke (2:18.14) in Millersville’s 143-115 loss to East Stroudsburg on Saturday. She also was part of the Marauders’ first place 400 freestyle relay (3:48.19) and second-place 200 medley relay (2:03.71). Amanda Thomas (William Tennent) finished third in the 200 free (2:03.76), fourth in the 100 backstroke (1:10.59) and was fifth in the 100 freestyle (57.80). She also was part of the first place 400 freestyle relay. Vicky DeTample (Pennsbury) was part of Millersville’s third place 400 freestyle relay team that posted a time of 4:02.48.
Kelsey Tennett (Hatboro-Horsham) captured first place in the 1 meter diving and second place in the 3 meter diving in West Chester’s 131-96 win over Southern Connecticut State University on Jan. 21. Jess Healey (Hatboro-Horsham) finished second in the 200 backstroke (2:15.05), third in the 200 IM (2:17.63) and was part of the third place 400 medley relay team. In Friday’s 163-134 loss to Penn, Healy finished sixth in the 100 free (56.53) and was part of West Chester’s fifth place 200 medley relay. Sarah Staudenmeier (Central Bucks West) finished fifth in the 100 backstroke (1:04.79) and was part of West Chester’s sixth place 200 medley relay.
Lock Haven freshman Abby Miller (Neshaminy) finished third in the 200 freestyle (1:59.78) at the Vulcan Dual Meet Challenge on Saturday at California (Pa.) University. She also finished fourth in the 50 free (25.94) and was part of Lock Haven’s fourth place 400 medley relay (4:18.23). Rachel Vagnoni (Norristown) finished fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.74) and the 200 breaststroke (2:40.29) and sixth in the 50 free (26.35). She also was part of Lock Haven’s fourth place 200 free relay (1:44.59). Kasey Blesh (Neshaminy) finished fourth in the 1000 freestyle (11:09.57) and fourth in the 500 free (5:22.36). She was part of Lock Haven’s third place 800 free relay (8:42.16).
Junior Paige Whitmire (Souderton) finished first in the 50 free (23.52) and also was part of Penn State’s winning 200 medley relay team (1:44.28) and first place 200 free relay (1:34.25) in the Nittany Lions’ 148-95 win over Villanova on Friday.
Sophomore Alicia Detweiler (Pennridge) was part of Widener’s first place 400 medley relay that posted a time of 4:21.95 in the Pride’s 112-93 win over Cabrini. She finished second in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.83).
Alyssa Boeggeman (Neshaminy) was part of Shippensburg’s third place 200 medley relay (1:51.19) and fifth place 200 free relay (1:44.45) at the Navy Invitational on Saturday. Colleen Stiles (North Penn) finished fifth in the 200 back (2:18.87). Sara Small (Abington) was part of Shippensburg’s sixth place 200 free relay (1:49.51).
Freshman Chelsea Kozior (Council Rock South) captured first place in the 1000 freestyle at 11:27.69 in Ursinus College’s 122-77 win over Washington College on Saturday. She also placed second in the 100 freestyle at 57.19.
WRESTLING
Sophomore John Lindquist (Neshaminy) earned a pin at 157 in Shippensburg’s 21-20 win over East Stroudsburg on Thursday. The win snapped a nine-match losing streak against the Warriors. In Saturday’s Mid-Penn Duals, Lindquist won all three of his matches, propelling Shippensburg to a 2-1 mark as the Red Raiders defeated Thaddeus Stevens and Millersville but fell to York. Lindquist notched a tech fall in Shippensburg’s 43-9 win over Thaddeus Stevens and earned a 10-4 decision in Shippensburg’s 28-12 win over Millersville. He earned a 4-3 decision in the Red Raiders’ 20-15 loss to York.
Freshman Richard Jasinki (Pennridge) earned a 12-2 major decision at 157 in Ursinus College’s 32-11 win over Merchant Marine on Saturday. He notched a 3-1 decision at 157 in Ursinus’ 27-10 win over Stevens.
