MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Penn State Abington sophomore Alexander Kane (Central Bucks East) earned the Co-NEAC Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week honors for the week ending Sept. 6. Kane picked up his third individual win with a first place finish at the Penn State Harrisburg Invitational, finishing the newly designed eight-kilometer course in 26:41 while finishing ahead of the second place runner by nearly two minutes on the hot and humid day. It was the second straight year Kane won the invitational while missing his own course record he set last year by just five seconds. Abington finished second overall out of five teams.
Kane earned another first place finish at the Charger Invitational hosted by Lancaster Bible College on Saturday, posting a time of 28:23.9 over the 8K course. Teammate Nicholas Volpe (William Tennent) finished fourth overall with a time of 30:13.5. The Nittany Lions won the team title.

Sophomore David Slade (Abington) was second on his Ursinus College squad at the DeSales Invitational on Saturday, posting a time of 29:56.31. Ursinus finished 13th as a team.

East Stroudsburg sophomore Dan Davis (North Penn) posted a time of 27:41 at the DeSales Invitational on Saturday, finishing 27th overall. East Stroudsburg finished second as a team.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Penn State Abington’s Megan O’Farrell (Pennsbury) finished fourth at the Charger Invitational hosted by Lancaster Bible College, posting a time of 22:55.8. Teammate Cecilia Rosenbloom (Cheltenham) finished eighth with a time of 23:20.9. The Nittany Lions captured the team title.

Kutztown junior Carolyn Fergus (North Penn) finished in 34th place with a time of 25:20.07 at the DeSales Invitational on Saturday. Junior Elizabeth McLaughlin (Upper Dublin) posted a time of 26:12.52. KU won the team title.

FIELD HOCKEY
Freshman Gabby Tofig (Council Rock North) had an assist in Lehigh’s 2-1 upset of a Lock Haven squad that is ranked 22d in the latest national rankings. Tofig is ranked 10th in the Patriot League with four goals and three assists. In Saturday’s 3-1 loss to Boston University, freshman Marissa Glatt (Central Bucks East) scored her Patriot League leading 10th goal of the season. In last Sunday’s 3-2 loss to Rider, Tofig and Glatt each scored a goal.

Taylor Prichett (William Tennent) scored her team-best 14th goal in Delaware Valley’s 3-2 overtime loss to Misericordia on Saturday.

Senior Alyssa Tourdot (Wissahickon) played her first home game of 2013 after returning from an injury, and the 16-goal scorer from last season recorded her first goal of the year to give Albright a first half lead against Lebanon Valley on Wednesday, but it wasn’t enough as Albright suffered a 2-1 loss.

Jackie Zylka (Souderton) scored her first goal of the year in Elizabethtown’s 5-1 win over Alvernia on Wednesday.

Casey McGowan (Central Bucks South) came up with a defensive save on the edge of the goal line in IUP’s 3-2 loss to Mercyhurst on Saturday.

Becky Ely (Council Rock North) scored a goal in No. 12 Messiah College’s 5-1 win over No. 1 Franklin and Marshall on Wednesday. The loss was the first of the season for F&M while Messiah improved to 8-2.

Sarah Yerk (Pennridge) had a pair of assists in Saint Joseph’s 3-1 win over Sa Salle on Friday afternoon.

Junior Amanda Krause (Council Rock North) finished with three saves in eighth-ranked The College of New Jersey’s 3-1 win over Eastern University on Tuesday. Krause stopped five shots in TCNJ’s 2-1 loss to second-ranked Montclair State on Friday in a battle of nationally-ranked teams.

Jennalise Taylor (Pennsbury) scored a goal in the eighth minute of Quinnipiac’s 4-1 win over Sacred Heart on Sunday.  In Wednesday’s 2-1 win over Brown, Taylor contributed an assist.

Junior forward Jessie Accurso (Central Bucks South) scored a goal in Yale’s 3-2 loss to Quinnipiac last Sunday.

Gwynedd Mercy senior Maria Karidas (Council Rock South) earned a spot on the CSAC Field Hockey Honor Roll after she hit two milestones during the week ending Sept. 6. In her team’s game against Richard Stockton, she scored her 50th career goal. She followed that up with three goals and two assists for a career-high eight points four days later. In 10 games, Karidas led the Griffins in goals (seven) and points (18).
Karidas connected for the hat trick in Gwynedd Mercy’s 5-0 win over Keystone on Saturday.

Colleen Kempf (Central Bucks South) scored her team’s lone goal in La Salle’s 3-1 loss to St. Joe’s on Friday.

Freshman Dana Adamson (Central Bucks South) was credited with a defensive save in Widener’s 2-1 double overtime loss to Arcadia on Wednesday.

Lauren Purvis (Hatboro-Horsham) scored a goal in No. 8 Penn State’s 2-0 win over Bucknell on Sunday. In Friday’s 6-1 win over Ohio State, Purvis scored a goal.

Alayna Brown (Souderton) scored a goal in West Chester’s 6-3 win on Sunday over host Ursinus College in the 35th Annual Eleanor Snell Cup series between the two regional hockey powers.

FOOTBALL
Senior kicker Sean Baner (William Tennent) connected on a 42-yard field goal as time expired to propel the University of Delaware to a 33-30 win over Albany on Saturday. Baner, who had missed two field goals earlier in the day, was perfect when he needed to be as he split the uprights to set off a wild celebration and send the Homecoming crowd of 17,363 home happy.

Junior Craig Needhammer (North Penn) had 52 yards on 20 carries in No. 24 Lycoming College’s 14-7 upset loss to Lebanon Valley on Saturday. Lycoming’s running game was held to just 50 yards on 35 attempts.

Sheldon Mayer (Norristown) hauled in six passes for 80 yards in Shippensburg’s 30-24 win over Lock Haven. Senior defensive end Jake Metz (Souderton) recorded a sack and totaled two tackles for a loss, bringing his career total to 52 – just a half-TFL short of tying the school record. Metz did pass Raider head coach Mark Maciejewski on Saturday to move into second place.

Shannon Mayer (Norristown) caught a career-high seven passes for a career best 78 yards and his first collegiate touchdown in No. 17 West Chester’s 34-20 win over East Stroudsburg on Saturday. His seven-yard TD in the third quarter was his first career TD reception.

MEN’S GOLF
Temple junior Matt Teesdale (Hatboro-Horsham) shot even par to finish second for the Owls and tie for 15th overall with a one-over 217 at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate in Raleigh, N.C., last weekend. Senior Russell Hartung (Central Bucks East) shot a 232. Temple finished seventh overall. Senior Matt Cresenzo (Cheltenham) shot a two-under 142 (70-72) to tie for 12th overall in the 90-player field after the first two rounds.

St. Joseph’s sophomore TJ Summers (Central Bucks West) shot a 154 (76-78) at the Temple Invitational at Philmont Country Club. The Hawks finished tied for 14th after Sunday’s final round. At the Joe Agee Invitational in Williamsburg, Va., that ended Tuesday, Summers finished in a tie for 16th with a three-round total of 220 (74-74-71).

La Salle senior Mike Johnson (Hatboro-Horsham) shot a two-over 72 and was tied for 12th place after the opening round of the Temple Invitational on Saturday at Philmont Country Club. After recording a triple-bogey on the second hole, Johnson was one-under the rest of the way with four birdies. He carded back-to-back birdies on the fifth and sixth holes but a bogey on the long, 490-yard par four seventh hole returned him to two-over. He played the next eight holes at two-under with birdies on holes 10 and 13, both short par fours, to get back to even. Bogeys on 16 and 18 gave him a final score of 72. Junior Greg Goodred (Hatboro-Horsham) had a solid afternoon with four-over 74. He was two-over at the turn before carding three birdies on the back and was one-over going into 16. He bogeyed the final three holes to finish with his 74, good for a tie at 32nd.

Millersville’s Kevin Davis (Hatboro-Horsham) provided his team’s best score in the opening round of the Challenge at Mystic Rock last weekend, shooting a three-over-par 75. It also was his best round of the season. He posted an 80 in the second round and an 84 in the third to drop into a tie for 37th.

WOMEN’S GOLF

shot a 164 in Middlebury College’s second place finish at the Williams Fall Invitational last weekend.

MEN’S SOCCER
Freshman Tyler Afflerbach (Souderton) had five saves in recording his fourth shutout of the season in Drexel’s 0-0 tie with Northeastern on Saturday.

Penn State Abington senior Marco Paparo (Abington) was named the NEAC Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending Sept. 6. It is the second straight week he received this honor. He added to his award total after being named ECAC DIII Upstate Offensive Co-Player of the Week as well.  The senior forward led the Nittany Lions to a pair of NEAC wins behind three goals and an assist. In a rematch of last year’s NEAC Championship, Paparo netted the game-winning goal four minutes into overtime to give the Nittany Lions a 1-0 win over defending champion Morrisville State College while handing them their first conference loss of the season. In the Nittany Lions’ 8-1 win over Cazenovia College, he scored two goals and added an assist, allowing the squad to remain a perfect 5-0 in NEAC play while improving to 9-2 overall.

Senior goalkeeper Dan Saint-Pol (Pennridge) made his lone save of the game on Lancaster Bible’s last chance of tying up the match in Penn State Abington’s 2-1 win over Lancaster Bible on Wednesday.

Freshman forward Ryan Molyneaux (Souderton) contributed an assist in Ursinus College’s 3-1 win over Washington College on Saturday. In the Bears’ 4-1 win over Goucher on Tuesday night, Molyneaux had a goal and two assists.

Junior Ryan Roedel (Neshaminy) scored the first goal of the game at the 44:54 mark in Gwynedd Mercy’s 2-0 win over Cairn on Wednesday.

Joe Farrell (Wissahickon) connected for his first goal of the season in La Salle’s 3-1 win over Duquesne in its Atlantic 10 opener on Friday evening.

Fran Miller (Central Bucks East) executed a perfect shot that curved over the goalie into the top left corner of the goal at the 17:28 mark of Bloomsburg’s 3-2 win over California (Pa.) on Saturday night. Teammate Anthony Manero (Council Rock North) was pushed in the box, setting up a penalty kick opportunity. Manero beat the goalie to make it 2-1 in the 55th minute.

WOMEN’S SOCCER
Junior Molly Phillips (Pennsbury) had an assist in Gettysburg College’s 5-0 win over Bryn Mawr College on Saturday. Phillips shares the team lead with three other players with four goals.

Megan Kelley (North Penn) set up the game’s only goal in the 58th minute of Millersville’s 1-0 win over West Chester on Saturday. Kelley ran down a cross on the left sideline and played the ball back into the middle where teammate Elizabeth Waite finished it off. It was the only shot the Marauders took on goal in the win. The win was Millersville’s second in a row over West Chester. Prior to last season, the Marauders had not won against the Golden Rams in 11 tries. Kelley scored the game winner in Millersville’s 1-0 win in 2012.

West Chester freshman Lexi Brown (Pennsbury) was named the ECAC Division II Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending Sept. 6. Brown scored a pair of game-winning goals, helping West Chester to a 2-0 week with conference wins over Clarion and IUP. Brown scored the lone marker in a 1-0 win over Clarion in the 58th minute. She also scored both goals in West Chester’s 2-0 win over IUP.

Ashley Saylor (Central Bucks South) scored twice to lead host West Chester to a 2-0 win over visiting Shippensburg on Tuesday. Brown had a hand in the second goal, sending Saylor and teammate Marie D’Angelo in on a two-on-one break. Saylor played the ball to her right past the outstretched goalie.

Alexis Haug (Central Bucks West) scored a goal and teammate Erin Farrell (Neshaminy) contributed an assist in Ursinus College’s 3-2 loss to Scranton on Saturday.

Freshman defender Katie Miller (North Penn) scored her team’s lone goal off a corner kick to lead Kutztown to a 1-0 win over Mansfield on Saturday, extending the team’s winning streak to seven. It was the team’s third consecutive shutout.

Freshman Caitlin Duddy (Souderton) scored a goal in Gwynedd Mercy’s 3-0 win over Baptist Bible on Saturday.

Erin Lafferty (Upper Dublin) scored her third goal of the season in the 73rd minute off a penalty kick to end UConn’s shutout bid in Temple’s 3-1 loss to Huskies on Friday.

Freshman Kayla Nolan (Abington) scored a goal and freshman Molly Wyman (Abington) added an assist in Penn State Abington’s 3-0 win over Lancaster Bible College on Thursday. In last Sunday’s 4-0 win over Cazenovia College, sophomore Cindy Wade (Abington) scored a pair of goals while teammate Brigitta Good (Abington) added a single goal.

WOMEN’S TENNIS
Senior Katie Kennedy (Wissahickon) and sophomore teammate Nicole Broccolino improved to 10-1 with their 8-5 win at number one doubles in Cabrini’s 7-2 loss to Marywood University on Saturday.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Freshman Casey Griffith (Upper Merion) recorded a team-best 24 digs in UMBC’s 3-2 loss to SUNY Binghamton on Saturday. In Friday’s 3-2 win at Albany, Griffith recorded a career-best 28 digs. Griffith had 16 digs in UMBC’s 3-1 loss to the University of New Hampshire last Sunday.

Junior Devyn Ingram (Upper Merion) had a team high 19 digs in Holy Family’s 3-1 win over Felician on Saturday. In Friday’s 3-1 CACC loss at Wilmington, Ingram had a match-high 22 digs to lead the defense. In Tuesday’s 3-2 win over Chestnut Hill, Ingram had a match-high 19 digs.

Junior Dana Wisniewski (Plymouth Whitemarsh) shared the team lead with seven kills in Cabrini’s 3-0 win over Rosemont on Thursday. Cabrini improved to 18-4 overall and remained unbeaten in Colonial States Athletic Conference play at 7-0. Sophomore Cassidy Koenig (Upper Merion) recorded 35 assists. In Wednesday’s 3-1 win over Swarthmore, senior Kristy Riley (Hatboro-Horsham) and Koenig each had 10 digs. Koenig also tallied a career high 59 assists in the win.

Franklin & Marshall middle hitter Julie Harvey (Hatboro-Horsham) was named the Centennial Conference Volleyball Player of the Week for the week ending Sept. 6. It is Harvey’s second honor of the season with the last coming on Sept. 4. It is the fourth time she has received this honor in her career. Harvey guided the Diplomats to a 2-0 record on the week that included a 3-1 win over Johns Hopkins and a 3-0 sweep of Haverford as F&M took sole possession of first place in the CC. Over a stretch of two contests, Harvey registered a .472 hitting percentage while averaging 2.71 kills and 1.0 blocks per set. Against the Blue Jays, she picked up nine kills on 19 swings for a .368 hitting percentage to go along with two assists and an ace. In a sweep of the Fords, Harvey hit at a .588 clip by notching 10 kills without an error in three sets while filling out the stat sheet with two solo blocks and assisting on three others.
Harvey was named to the All-Classic Team at the Knights Fall Classic hosted by Neumann University. In F&M’s 3-0 win over Catholic University, Harvey had a team-high 12 kills and four blocks. The junior middle hitter collected a .333 kill percentage after committing only three errors in 27 total attacks. In F&M’s 3-0 win over Stockton, Harvey had 15 kills and only one error in 22 total attacks to combine for a .636 hitting percentage. In Friday’s 3-0 win over Rowan at the Knights Fall Classic, Harvey led the team with 10 kills and eight blocks. In F&M’s 3-1 loss to host Neumann, Harvey had 14 kills and five blocks. In Tuesday’ 3-1 win over McDaniel, Harvey had 11 kills, one solo block and three block assists.

Abbie Keating (Neshaminy) had eight kills in Cairn University’s 3-0 win over Cedar Crest College on Saturday.

Freshman Sam Nelson (Central Bucks West) posted 19 assists in Penn State Abington’s 3-2 loss to Bryn Athyn on Tuesday.

Freshman Stephanie Elechko (North Penn) had eight kills and a .467 percentage in No. 12 Eastern University’s 3-0 sweep of Gallaudet University on Saturday.

Freshman Abby Mummert (Central Bucks South) was credited with a career-high 10 kills in Shippensburg’s 3-2 win over Kutztown on Saturday.

Michelle Carrieri (Central Bucks South) had three kills while teammate Stephanie Farrar (North Penn) had 14 digs in Gwynedd Mercy’s 3-0 loss to FDU-Florham on Saturday. In Gwynedd’s 3-0 loss to Lancaster Bible, Carrieri had three kills, six aces, two digs and a solo block, and Farrar served up four aces. In Tuesday’s 3-0 win over Rosemont, Carrieri served up a career-high 11 aces as the team totaled 21.

Senior middle blocker Brittany O’Hara (Pennridge) had five kills and three blocks in Moravian’s 3-2 loss to Bethel University on Friday during this weekend’s trip to Minnesota. In Moravian’s 3-0 win over Penn State Brandywine on Wednesday, O’Hara had three kills and a block.

Audrey Stringer (Pennsbury) had nine kills and six blocks in Kutztown’s 3-2 loss to Shippensburg on Saturday afternoon. In Friday’s 3-0 win over Millersville, Stringer led the attack, hitting .474 for the match. She recorded 12 kills and four blocks.
