MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Penn State Abington sophomore Alexander Kane (Central Bucks East) was named the North Eastern Athletic Conference Runner of the Week. It is the second straight week Kane has won the honor after another dominant performance. The sophomore speedster won his second straight event in as many weeks as he took first place at the Lancaster Bible College Charger Invitational after finishing the eight-kilometer course in 28:23.9. Kane’s finish time was over a full minute faster than the second place finisher. It was his fourth first place finish of the year. The Nittany Lions won the five-team event with an overall score of 25 points.
Kane earned another first place finish by posting a time of 30:29.9 at the Daniel Boone Invitational hosted by Albright University on Saturday. Junior Nicholas Volpe (William Tennent) crossed the line in 33:39.8 for a ninth place finish. The Nittany Lions won the team title as well.
Ursinus College sophomore David Slade (Abington) posted a time of 29:00.4 at the Gettysburg Invitational. The Bears finished 16th.
Gwynedd Mercy freshman Matt French (Bensalem) rounded out the top five Griffins to cross the finish line at the 2013 Connecticut College Invitational on Saturday, posting a personal best time of 28:11.
Penn State freshman Connor Quinn (Hatboro-Horsham) posted a time of 24:57.91 while senior Nick Scarpello (Central Bucks West) finished in 24:58.75, and junior Chris Campbell (Council Rock North) completed the course in 25:13.31. The Nittany Lions finished 17th as a team.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Elizabethtown freshman Liz Wedekind (Pennsbury), in just the second 6K of her collegiate career, ran 23:30 to take 81st in the Oberlin Inter-Regional Rumble. The Blue Jays were seventh of 34 teams in the varsity 6K and tied for third in the women’s open 6K standings. Wedekind ran 24:47 at the Paul Short run.
Penn State Abington senior Megan O’Farrell (Pennsbury) finished sixth with a time of 22:52.1 at the Daniel Boone Invitational hosted by Albright University on Saturday. The women’s team placed second amongst seven teams.
Gwynedd Mercy freshman Hannah Geiger (Council Rock South) finished her first ever 6,000-meter run in 25:24 at the 2013 Connecticut College Invitational on Saturday. The Griffins finished 18th of 21 teams.
Millersville’s Megan Meyer (Central Bucks South) finished in 30th place with a time of 24:07.9 at the Gettysburg Invitational on Saturday. The team finished fifth out of 27 teams.
Penn State sophomore Tori Gerlach (Pennridge) rounded out the top five for the Nittany Lions at the Pre-National Invitational at Indiana State on Saturday morning, posting a time of 21:53.57. The Nittany Lions finished in 13th place.
La Salle’s Anne Areias (William Tennent) finished 11th with a time of 22:08 at the Princeton Invitational on Saturday. The Explorers finished third in the 25-team field.
Bloomsburg’s Keelan McDonald (Central Bucks West) posted a time of 25:13 at the Penn State Nationals on Friday. As a team, the Huskies took fifth place as the only Division II team in the field of 10.
Kutztown junior Elizabeth McLaughlin (Upper Dublin) led the women’s team with an 85th place finish at the Leopard Invitational Saturday hosted by Lafayette University, posting a time of 24:46.26.
FIELD HOCKEY
Freshman Marissa Glatt (Central Bucks East) scored a goal in Lehigh’s 3-2 loss to Colgate on Saturday. It was Glatt’s 11th goal of the season.
Amanda Krause (Council Rock North) had four saves in The College of New Jersey’s 4-3 win over Rowan on Saturday. In Thursday’s 6-0 win at Albright, Krause and teammate Kelly Schlupp (Council Rock South) combined for the shutout in goal.
Olivia Shoemaker (Souderton) cut a two-goal deficit to one with her team-leading ninth goal of the season, but No. 10 Massachusetts scored five unanswered goals in La Salle’s 7-1 setback at Amherst on Friday.
Meghan McCullough (Plymouth Whitemarsh) helped to set up the final goal in Quinnipiac’s 3-0 win over Robert Morris on Friday.
Christina Maida (Central Bucks East) earned the win in goal in No. 9 Princeton’s 6-2 win at Brown on Saturday.
Sarah Yerk (Pennridge) had an assist in St. Joseph’s 4-2 loss to Cornell last Sunday.
Junior Maddy Harding (Central Bucks South) scored her sixth goal of the season in Villanova’s 2-1 loss to Providence on Saturday.
Sophomore Taylor Prichett (William Tennent) scored a goal in Delaware Valley’s 3-1 win at Wilkes University on Saturday. It was her 17th tally of the season. In Thursday’s 3-1 win over Immaculata, Prichett had a pair of goals.
Kelsey Messer (Council Rock North) was credited with a defensive save in Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s 3-0 win over Keene State on Wednesday.
Casey McGowan (Central Bucks South) scored on a penalty stroke in IUP’s 3-2 overtime win at Mansfield on Tuesday. It was McGowan’s sixth goal of the year.
Freshman Dana Adamson (Central Bucks South) was credited with a defensive save in Widener’s 2-1 loss to Lebanon Valley on Tuesday.
Rachel Valentine (Souderton) scored a goal in Lock Haven’s 5-0 win over La Salle on Sunday.
FOOTBALL
Junior Sheldon Mayer (Norristown) set a career high with 11 receptions for 163 yards and a touchdown in Shippensburg’s 55-30 win over Kutztown on Saturday. Senior defensive end Jake Metz (Souderton) set another school record after teaming up on two sacks in Saturday’s contest. Metz now has 53.0 career tackles for loss (TFLs), putting him ahead of former teammate Cody Fleming (52.5; 2009-12) for Shippensburg’s all-time mark. Senior Mike Schmidt (Harry S Truman) had a 15-yard kickoff return.
Cornerback Jalen Nieves (Bensalem) was one of three players with a team-leading six tackles in Kutztown’s 55-30 loss to Shippensburg on Saturday. Senior safety Alex DiNolfi (Norristown) picked off a pass that set up an early field goal.
Shawn Leo (Souderton) kicked a season-long 41-yard field goal with 1:03 to go in the first half of No. 15 West Chester’s 34-13 win over Lock Haven on Saturday.
Rasheed Johnson (Norristown) returned an interception 40 yards in Millersville’s 30-12 road win over Cheyney Saturday.
MEN’S GOLF
Penn State Abington freshman Sean Ailtmar (Central Bucks South) tied for ninth with a 9-over par 79 to lead the Nittany Lions at Rutgers-Camden’s Scarlet Raptor Invitational Friday to close out the fall portion of the 2013-14 season. The tournament was held at the par-70 Pennsauken Country Club. The Nittany Lions finished seventh out of nine teams. In the inaugural Chestnut Hill Griffin Fall Invitational on Tuesday at Indian Valley Country Club, Kevin O’Connor (Neshaminy) had rounds of 49-52 (101).
Millersville’s Kevin Davis (Hatboro-Horsham) shot a 6-over-par 78 at the 2013 PSAC Championships. The Marauders shot 300 as a team to win their first team conference title since 2003.
Temple junior Matt Teesdale (Hatboro-Horsham) and senior Matt Crescenzo (Cheltenham) were tied fro 16th with six-over 164 scores at the Temple Invitational last weekend. Crescenzo shot a three-over 73 in the final round to help lead the Owls to a tie for fourth at the 17-team invitational.
La Salle senior Mike Johnson (Hatboro-Horsham) shot a 74 (+4) to place 16th with his two-round total of 146 (+6) at the Temple Invitational last weekend. Junior Greg Goodreds (Hatboro-Horsham) shot a 74-75=155 (+15), which was good for a tie for 70th. La Salle carded a 300 on the second day, moving up two spots to finish 12th with a 36-hole score of 607.
West Chester’s Eric Slawter (Upper Merion) tied for seventh overall at the Howard ‘Bud’ Elwell Fall Classic last week (74-77=151). West Chester won the invitational, its first team title this fall.
WOMEN’S ICE HOCKEY
Freshman Kelsey Koelzer (Hatboro-Horsham) connected on a power-play goal in Princeton’s 4-1 exhibition game win over McGill University.
MEN’S SOCCER
Drexel freshman Tyler Afflerbach (Souderton) was named Colonial Marble and Granite Athlete of the Week by Drexel Athletics for the week ending Oct. 13. Afflerbach had eight saves on nine shot attempts last week, good for an .889 save percentage. Afflerbach, who began his career with three shutouts in his first four games, notched his fourth on Saturday when the Dragons played Northeastern to a 0-0 draw. The tie represented the first point Drexel had earned against Northeastern since 2008. Afflerbach had five stops in the double overtime draw, adding three more in a 1-0 loss to Princeton earlier in the week. The Souderton grad has played every minute in net since being inserted into the starting lineup on Sept. 8. Afflerbach is one shutout shy of the CAA lead in that category despite not playing in the Dragons’ first three games.
Afflerbach made eight saves, a career high, in picking up his fifth shutout of the season in Drexel’s 2-0 win at UNCW on Wednesday night. With the shutout, Afflerbach and the Dragons’ defense had gone 231.33 since allowing a goal, more than two full games ago. In Saturday’s 2-1 win at Delaware, Afflerbach had four saves. Drexel is 3-0-1 in league play with three games remaining.
Keeper Dan Saint-Pol (Pennridge) tabulated two saves through 110 minutes in Penn State Abington’s 0-0 tie against Wells College on Saturday.
Joe Farrell (Wissahickon) contributed an assist in La Salle’s 2-0 win over Saint Joseph’s on Friday. In last Sunday’s 2-1 win over St. Bonaventure, Nick Becker (Council Rock North) played a low cross in front of the net that was turned into a goal.
Mike Robinson (North Penn) was credited with an assist on the winning goal in No. 17 Penn State’s 2-1 double overtime win over No. 14 Michigan State on Sunday in East Lansing.
Fran Miller (Central Bucks East) scored in a goal in the fifth minute of overtime to lift Bloomsburg to a 2-1 win over Millersville on Wednesday. Anthony Manero (Council Rock North) had an assist on the goal. Miller fed Matt Cannon (Council Rock North) for a goal that knotted the score 1-1 with 1:18 to play. Miguel Diaz (Central Bucks East) started the play with a corner kick to Miller in the box.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Cedarville University’s Grace Miorelli (Souderton) was named the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Athlete of the Week. The freshman midfielder helped guide the Lady Jackets to a 2-1 week overall with both wins coming in conference. Miorelli scored three times and added an assist in a dominating 7-1 win over Davis & Elkins, who currently stand in second in the conference. Miorelli then played a big role in the team’s only goal against Alderson Broaddus in their 1-0 victory. Miorelli fired a shot that required a diving save out of bounds to keep the game scoreless. She created a corner kick opportunity in the 60th minute, which she sent into the box. The ball was cleared back to her side where she chipped it back into the goal box. The goalie mishandled the service attempt by Miorelli, and teammate Elizabeth Cox sent the ball into the net for the game’s only goal. No assist was given on the goal, but Miorelli was vital in the scoring effort.
Carly Yost (North Penn) headed home a corner kick in the first half to help lead West Chester to a 3-1 win over Seton Hill on Saturday. Carla Deola (Council Rock South) set up the second goal with an assist. Ashley Saylor (Central Bucks South) closed out the scoring with a goal. In Wednesday’s 5-0 win over Pitt-Johnstown, Yost scored a pair of goals and Lexi Brown (Pennsbury) added a single goal.
Junior Molly Phillips (Pennsbury) scored her fifth goal of the season in Gettysburg’s 1-0 win over McDaniel College in a battle between two of the top teams in the Centennial Conference on Wednesday night.
Alyssa Kirk (Neshaminy) scored a goal in Temple’s 2-1 loss to Cincinnati on Sunday.
Meghan Kaminski (Central Bucks South) was credited with a late save, preserving the shutout in No. 17 Penn State’s 5-0 win over Illinois on Sunday.
Theo Horozoglou (Council Rock South) scored off a corner kick in Gwynedd Mercy’s 2-0 win over Notre Dame (Md.) on Thursday.

Kaceyanne Cerankowski (Neshaminy) sent a left-footed cross into the six-yard box that was converted into a goal in Elizabethtown’s 7-0 rout of Hood on Saturday. In Thursday’s 6-1 loss to No. 9 Messiah, Cerankowski scored her team’s only goal. Her goal snapped an eight-game scoreless streak for Messiah goalie Audra Larson, who hadn’t been scored upon since Sept. 11 in a 2-1 win over Mary Washington.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Senior Katie Kennedy (Wissahickon) was part of the number one doubles team that earned an 8-0 victory in Cabrini’s 9-0 victory over Notre Dame (Md.) on Saturday. Kennedy also scored a 6-0, 6-1 win at number one singles.
Senior Rachel Fein (Wissahickon) earned a 6-1, 6-2 win at number one singles in Gwynedd Mercy’s 5-4 win over Cabrini on Saturday. Taylor Michener (Central Bucks South) earned a 6-1, 6-0 win at second singles. With the match tied 4-4, sophomore Jenna Caffarello (North Penn) earned a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 win at sixth singles in one of the longest matches in school history.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Freshman libero Casey Griffith (Upper Merion) had 13 digs in UMBC’s 3-1 win over Hartford on Friday.
Sophomore Cassidy Koenig (Upper Merion) had 33 assists in Cabrini’s 3-0 sweep of Neumann on Wednesday. Cabrini improved to 19-4 overall and 8-0 in conference play with three league matches remaining. Koenig is averaging 10.03 assists per set and was ranked 27th in Division II in the NCAA statistical rankings.
Junior Devyn Ingram (Upper Merion) finished with a match high 24 digs in Holy Family’s 3-1 loss to Caldwell on Saturday. In Friday’s 3-1 loss to the University of the Sciences, Ingram led the Tigers with 18 digs. In Holy Family’s 3-1 win over West Chester on Tuesday, Ingram had 10 digs.
Julie Harvey (Hatboro-Horsham) led the offense with 17 kills and a .615 hitting percentage in Franklin & Marshall’s 3-0 sweep of Washington on Saturday. The junior middle hitter recorded only one error on 26 total attacks over the course of three sets.
Sam Nelson (Central Bucks West) had 17 assists in Penn State Abington’s 3-1 loss to Wells College on Saturday. In the Nittany Lions 3-1 win over Morrisville State later in the day, Nelson tallied a career high 49 digs. In three matches, Nelson contributed 98 assists.
Eastern University freshman Stephanie Elechko (North Penn) was named to the All-Tournament Team with 46 kills over four matches at the Trinity University Invitational on Saturday. The North Penn grad had 20 kills in Eastern’s split on Saturday – the Eagles fell to Southwestern 3-1 and defeated Springfield College 3-0. In Eastern’s split on Friday – the Eagles topped the University of Redlands 3-1 but fell to No. 21 Trinity 3-0, Elechko had 13 kills in each match, hitting .393 in match one and .333 against Trinity. In Wednesday’s 3-0 sweep of Manhattanville, Elechko had six kills.
Senior Sarah Godfrey (William Tennent) had a pair of blocks in Lebanon Valley’s 3-0 win over Utica College on Saturday. In Lebanon Valley’s 3-0 sweep of Hartwick later on Saturday, Godfrey had five kills on eight swings with no errors. In Lebanon Valley’s 3-0 loss to SUNY-New Paltz on Friday, Godfrey had seven kills.
Senior middle blocker Mara Berzins (Pennridge) had eight solo blocks in Cairn University’s 3-1 win over Ursinus College on Tuesday.
Freshman Abby Mummert (Central Bucks South) had five kills in Shippensburg’s 3-0 win over CIAA North front-runner Chowan on Tuesday night.
Senior Michelle Carrieri (Central Bucks South) collected a team-high six kills in Gwynedd Mercy’s 3-0 loss to Rowan on Saturday. In the Griffins 3-0 loss to Baruch later in the day, Carrieri and Stephanie Farrar (North Penn) each reached double digit in digs. Farrar totaled six kills for GM.
Audrey Stringer (Pennsbury) led the attack with 12 kills and only two errors in Kutztown’s 3-2 loss to Clarion on Saturday. She also had two blocks. In Friday’s 3-0 loss to California (Pa.), Stringer converted six out of seven attacks into kills in the first set for an attack percentage of .857. In the second set, Stringer had a .643 attack percentage. Stringer finished the match with 14 kills and one error, the fourth time this season attacking over .500.
