MEN’S BASKETBALL
Sophomore Christian Santos (Cheltenham) is expected to be part of a rotation that will see playing time for a Millersville squad picked to finish eighth in the PSAC East. Freshman Pete Williams (Hatboro-Horsham) will add depth.
Senior forward Lavoy Allen (Pennsbury) will lead a Temple squad that is ranked #22 in the Associated Press Men’s Basketball Preseason Poll.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Ashley Rosario (Harry S. Truman) is on the roster of a Goldey-Beacom College basketball team that returns its top seven scorers from last year’s conference semifinalist squad and is picked to finish second again this season.
MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
LaSalle’s Nick Crits (Wissahickon) finished 18th with a time of 25:10 in Saturday’s Atlantic 10 Championships. The Explorers finished fifth.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Temple senior Rebecca Mims (Upper Dublin) finished with her team’s third best time at Saturday’s Atlantic 10 Championships, placing 82nd with a time of 20:05. Temple finished 13th overall.
FIELD HOCKEY
Cabrini sophomore Taylor McGarvey (Plymouth Whitemarsh) received CSAC second team honors. She started each of the Cavaliers’ 17 games in her first season with the program, posting 10 points with five goals. Cabrini (10-7) owns the No. 1 seed and a quarterfinal round bye in the CSAC Tournament.
Junior Taryn Gjurich (North Penn) scored the game-winning goal in the 44th minute of play as second-ranked North Carolina defeated host Old Dominion 2-1 on Saturday. It was Gjurich’s sixth goal of the season. The Tar Heels improved to 17-1 on the season.
Jessica Longstretch (Council Rock North) had assists on all four goals in Penn State’s 4-2 win over Northwestern on Friday. With the win, the Nittany Lions improved to 13-4 overall (4-2 Big 10).
Senior Katie O’Donnell (Wissahickon) contributed two goals and three assists in Maryland’s 8-0 win over No. 10 Louisville on Saturday. Prior to the game, O’Donnell was one of three seniors honored. The Terps clinched the top seed in next weekend’s ACC Tournament last week with a 3-2 win over UNC and earned a bye in the tournament’s first round on Thursday. The Terps are 17-1, 5-0 ACC.
O’Donnell was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week on Monday for her four-goal, two-assist performance in the Terps’ two wins over top ten teams the preceding week. She had a hand in each of the Terps’ six goals over the week and helped lead her team to its second straight 5-0 ACC regular season record and the No. 1 seed in the ACC Tournament. O’Donnell scored Maryland’s first and third goals in its win over No. 7 American. She scored twice in the game’s first 12 minutes in the Terps’ win over previously undefeated UNC and drew a penalty corner with just over three minutes remaining and assisted on the corner that produced the game winner. O’Donnell was honored as the league’s top player twice this year.
Gwynedd-Mercy freshman Maria Karidas (Council Rock South) was chosen the 2010 Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Field Hockey Rookie of the Year. She is the CSAC and team leader in points (34) and goals (14). She has registered points in eight of 10 games she has started and recorded goals in her last six straight games. She played a major role in the success of her team, which closed its season with a 12-6 record overall (7-1 CSAC) and a second place finish. Joining Karidas on the first team was junior Casey Dellostretto (Upper Moreland). Sophomore Erin Gorenflo (Plymouth Whitemarsh) received honorable mention.
Karidas was named The Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Field Hockey Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 24. The freshman totaled five goals and added an assist in a pair of wins last week. Karidas recorded a hat trick at Neumann, notching all of her team’s goals in a 3-2 road win. In Saturday’s game against York, her second goal of the game came with less than a second remaining to force overtime where she assisted on the game-winning score for a 4-3 victory. The Griffins are 11-6 (6-1 CSAC).  It is the second consecutive week Karidas received this honor. On Wednesday, Karidas had a goal and an assist in Gwynedd’s 3-2 CSAC win at Keystone. Dellostretto had the assist on Karidas’ goal.
Caitlin Vasey (Central Bucks East) scored a goal in #2 Lebanon Valley’s 7-1 win over Widener in its regular season finale on Friday.  Widener goalie Megan Purcell (Pennridge) made 10 saves in her final collegiate game. On Tuesday, Purcell turned away 12 shots in Widener’s 3-2 win at Arcadia. Lebanon Valley (17-1, 8-1 CC) is the Commonwealth Conference’s second seed entering this week’s playoffs and will face third-seeded Elizabethtown on Wednesday.
Freshman Kierstan Ryan (Harry S. Truman) scored her team’s only goal in Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s 3-1 loss to Castleton State College on Wednesday.
Sophomore Kerry Senderling (North Penn) contributed an assist in Shippensburg’s 7-1 win over Mansfield. With the win, the top-ranked Lady Raiders clinched the PSAC Western Division for the second consecutive year and matched the longest winning streak in school history (16).
FOOTBALL
Junior linebacker Greg Martell (Neshaminy) had a team and game best 17 tackles in Ursinus College’s 24-17 loss to Moravian on Saturday.
Sophomore quarterback Kevin Morton (Abington) threw for a career-high 451 yards and five touchdowns in Kutztown’s come-from-behind 45-23 win over West Chester on Saturday. Morton threw a touchdown pass in his 14th consecutive contest. Josh Mastromatto (Upper Dublin) hauled in a TD pass and finished the day with five catches for 61 yards. Jason Ulmer (Neshaminy) intercepted a pass, setting up the go-ahead score for Kutztown.
For his efforts in Kutztown’s win over West Chester, Morton was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division Offensive Player of the Week for the second time in the last three weeks. Morton rallied the undefeated and nationally-ranked Golden Bears from a 13-point third quarter deficit to a 45-23 win. It was KU’s first win over West Chester since 2003. Morton completed 35 passes for 451 yards – the second highest amount in Kutztown history – and a career-best five touchdowns. Overall, he completed 35-of-52 passes (67.3 percent) without an interception and was sacked just once. Kutztown (9-0 overall, 6-0 PSAC) is ranked 15th in the latest American Football Coaches’ Association top 25 poll and 18th in the d2football.com top 25. All five of Morton’s TD passes came in the second half, and all five of them came within a span of 12 minutes and 56 seconds as Kutztown scored 35 unanswered points to finish the game. It was the fourth time this year he threw for at least 350 yards and the third straight week. The five touchdown passes in a single game were the most by a KU quarterback since 1992. Behind Morton’s efforts, Kutztown has scored at least 33 points in every game this year while establishing the single-season school record for points in a season with 370. Kutztown has scored 30 or more points in 10 consecutive games going back to last season. Morton leads the PSAC in total offense (329.3), passing average (299.0) and passing efficiency (161.4). As a team, the Golden Bears lead the conference in scoring offense (41.1), total offense (441.6), passing offense (299.0) and passing efficiency (161.4). For his career, Morton is third all-time in KU history with 44 touchdown passes, fourth in completions with 322 and fourth with 4,612 passing yards.
Jamie Thomas (Plymouth Whitemarsh) assisted on a sack and had three unassisted tackles as well as an assist in Millersville’s 19-14 loss to Shippensburg on Saturday. Teammate Steven Roberts (Upper Dublin) also had a tackle.
MEN’S SOCCER
Ross Garabedian (Hatboro-Horsham) scored a goal in Chestnut Hill’s 4-2 loss to Philadelphia University on Thursday.
Jeff Pio (William Tennent) scored his team’s only goal in LaSalle’s 1-1 tie with UMass on Sunday. Pio scored on the rebound of a shot by teammate Ryan Richter (William Tennent). The tie extended LaSalle’s unbeaten streak to four. The Explorers are 6-6-3 overall (4-2-1 Atlantic 10). In Friday night’s 4-2 win over Rhode Island, rookie Jidell Roach (Abington) contributed one goal and two assists. Richter also scored a goal.
Fran Miller (Central Bucks East) took one of just four shots in Bloomsburg’s 1-0 double overtime loss to East Stroudsburg in the Huskies’ season finale on Saturday night.
Sophomore Alex Supplee (North Penn) scored a goal in Shippensburg’s 4-3 win over Felician on Wednesday. Sophomore Andrew Foran (Council Rock North) registered one save during the second half and overtime in recording his third victory of the season.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Sophomore Gabby Pakhtigian (North Penn) notched her 14th career win and seventh career shutout in LaSalle’s 3-0 win over UMass on Sunday. She stopped a pair of shots in the win, including a diving save in the 81st minute of a free kick which could have pulled UMass to within one. The Explorers, who won three of their last four games, will travel to Rhode Island this week for the A-10 championship, which will start on Thursday. LaSalle is 10-8-2 overall (4-4-1 A-10).
Junior keeper Tara Murphy (Council Rock South) recorded six saves in Temple’s 1-0 loss to Saint Louis on Friday. On Sunday, seniors Brianna Costello (Council Rock North), Meredith Crowell (North Penn), Kelly Diviny (Council Rock South) and Steph Ferretti (Council Rock North) were honored during the team’s Senior Day celebration prior to the Owls’ 7-0 loss to Charlotte.
Sam Moyer (Central Bucks West) scored a goal in Kutztown’s 2-0 win over Mansfield on Saturday. Before the game Chelsea Deeter (Neshaminy) was one of four seniors honored. With the win, Kutztown (13-3-2 overall, 10-3-1 PSAC) extended its unbeaten streak to eight. The Golden Bears are ranked 22nd in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America top 25 poll.
MEN’S SWIMMING
Ben Safran (Central Bucks West) finished first in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:01.28 in Bloomsburg’s 163-99 loss to West Chester on Saturday. Tim Dorsch (Souderton) was part of the 400 medley relay that won first place.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING
Sophomore Megan Lafferty (Upper Dublin) was part of Maryland’s 200 medley relay that finished first with a time of 1:43.07 in the Terps’ 165-127 loss to UNC on Saturday. She also was part of the first place 200 free relay that finished with a time of 1:33.17. It was the first loss of the season for Maryland. Lafferty finished third in the 100 free (51.32).
East Stroudsburg senior Amy Rowland (Upper Moreland) captured third in the 50 free with a time of 26.63 in Saturday’s tri-meet that saw ESU defeat Misericordia (135-127) but fall to Kutztown (151-100). Rowland also finished fourth in the 200 back (2:26.70) and ninth in the 200 free (2:10.50). She was part of ESU’s 400 free relay that finished third with a time of 3:44.88.
Tori Hall (Council Rock North) was second in the 100 back with a time of 1:02.86 in Bloomsburg’s 171-91 loss to West Chester on Saturday. In the 200 butterfly, Madeline Barlow (Pennsbury) was second with a time of 2:17.82.
Paige Whitmire (Souderton) won three events in Penn State’s 187-113 win over Virginia Tech last Saturday. Whitmire was part of the 200 medley relay that placed first with a time of 1:42.88 as well as the first place 400 free relay that finished the course in a time of 3:26.82. Whitmire also won the 500 free after clocking in at 23.61.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Freshman Lauren Schmickle (Hatboro-Horsham) had 15 assists and one block in Millersville’s 3-0 win over Cheyney on Friday (25-4, 25-4, 25-7).
East Stroudsburg senior outside hitter Alyson Stark (Council Rock South) went over the 300-kill mark for the second time in her career after surpassing 1,000 career kills last weekend. The two-time All-PSAC East selection has 303 kills this season. She had five kills in ESU’s 3-0 loss to Lock Haven on Tuesday.
