MEN’S BASKETBALL
Sophomore Ronnie Benson (Souderton) is a key member of a Bloomsburg squad that returns its top six scorers from last year. Benson averaged 7.7 points per game and hit a team-best 39 three-pointers. In mid-January, he earned the PSAC Rookie of the Week award. Sophomore Dan Hoover (North Penn) averaged 7.5 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. He was twice named PSAC East Rookie of the Week. He also led the Huskies in getting to the free throw line with a mark of 105.
Senior Brian Oleksiak (Abington) is a returning starter for the Shippensburg basketball team. Last year, he averaged 6.4 points and six rebounds per game.
MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Shippensburg junior Sean Stetler (Central Bucks South) finished 18th (27:20) in Saturday’s PSAC Championships. Shippensburg, which finished third, will compete in the NCAA Regionals at Mansfield on Saturday.
Brandon Pomerantz (Council Rock North) finished second in Lock Haven’s first place finish at Saturday’s PSAC Championships (26:25.6).
LaSalle’s Tyler Jones (Central Bucks West) finished 13th overall out of 141 runners while picking up the first all-conference accolades of his career at Saturday’s Atlantic 10 championships. He crossed the finish line in 27:12.0.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Sophomore Brooke Airey (Neshaminy) is running in the top seven for nationally-ranked Messiah College. She placed 135th at the Paul Short Invitational (Brown), and in Saturday’s MAC championship, she finished 18th with a time of 25.48.46.
Senior Andrea Kellock (North Penn) finished 10th with a time of 23:23 to help lead Bloomsburg to a second place finish in Saturday’s PSAC championships.
Gettysburg freshman Christine Esposito (Neshaminy) placed second in a triangular meet against Messiah College and Juniata College in late September and more recently placed 85th at the prestigious Paul Short (Brown) Invitational where she was Gettysburg’s third runner to the finish line. On Saturday, she finished 35th in the Centennial Conference championship with a time of 25.22.30. Gettysburg finished fourth as a team.
Lock Haven’s Theresa Gould (Hatboro-Horsham) was 23rd overall in the PSAC Championships on Saturday. The Lady Eagles finished fourth.
FIELD HOCKEY
Rider freshman Marlaine Schneider (Neshaminy) was named Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week for the fifth time in six weeks. Schneider was honored for all games played Oct. 19-25. She had the game-winning assist as Rider (15-1, 6-0 NEC) won 1-0 in overtime at St. Francis (Pa.) Oct. 25. That win clinched Rider’s 10th straight NEC playoff berth. Schneider stole the ball at the 25, ran it back up the field and passed to Virginia Equsquiza, who scored from the top of the circle at the 9:49 mark of overtime. Schneider also assisted on Rider’s third goal in a 4-0 win at Robert Morris on Oct. 23. Schneider has points in nine of her last 11 games and leads all rookies in the conference with 18 points (six goals, six assists).
Junior Katie O’Donnell (Wissahickon) became the all-time career points leader at the University of Maryland with 193 after her two-goal, one-assist performance in Maryland’s 6-2 win over No. 12 Stanford on Friday. She is still second on the all-time assist list with 64. Top-ranked Maryland closed out its regular season with an 18-0 record, a first in the program’s history.
Seniors Mandi Ruth and Kasey Ruth (Souderton) started all 19 games for a Temple University squad that clinched its seventh straight berth in the Atlantic-10 tournament. The Owls notched a 4-2 must-win over Richmond to secure the final sport in the post-season tournament that will be held at the University of Massachusetts this weekend.
Ali Meves (Wissahickon) was credited with five saves in Penn State’s 5-1 loss to No. 8 Michigan State on Saturday, bringing her season total to 100. She is the first Penn State goalie to reach triple digits since 2003. Penn State, which enters this week’s Big 10 Tournament as the No. 7 seed, will face Ohio State in Thursday’s opening round.
Nicole Nelson (Souderton) has seen action in all 18 regular season games for a Syracuse squad that is ranked fifth in the country. The Orange defeated Rutgers 6-1 on Sunday to close out its regular season with a 16-2 record overall and 6-0 in the Big East. This is only the second Syracuse squad to finish its Big East season undefeated. The Orange won back-to-back championships for the first time since it won three in a row in 1993, 1994 and 1995.
Freshman Rebecca Chylack (Souderton) scored the game winner off a penalty corner to give LaSalle a season-ending 2-1 victory over Bryant on Saturday. The goal was the 11th of the season by the rookie, the most by an Explorer since Kelly McGahey scored 12 in 1990. Teammate Haley Froshour (Council Rock North) had the assist. The Explorers closed out the season with a record of 8-12. On Friday, Chylack scored a goal while Froshour had an assist in a 6-3 loss to UMass.
Bloomsburg senior Breanne Tobin scored a goal on a corner shot to knot the score 1-1 in Saturday’s PSAC title game against Shippensburg. The Huskies went on to earn a 2-1 win to capture their 16th title overall and third straight. Caitlin Koczynski (Neshaminy) made six saves in goal. Tobin also scored a goal in Bloomsburg’s 7-0 rout of Mercyhurst on Friday in a PSAC semifinal contest. Koczynski recorded a save in a half of action in goal.
Junior Megan Purcell (Pennridge) collected 23 saves in Widener’s 7-0 loss to No. 7 Lebanon Valley on Friday.
FOOTBALL
Greg Martel (Neshaminy) is the leading tackler on an Ursinus squad that is 4-4 on the season. The sophomore linebacker has 36 solo tackles and has assisted on 17 others. Teammate Chas Cathers (Central Bucks West) has nine solo and four assisted tackles as well as one sack. Sean Whelen (Central Bucks East) has played in seven games and has 21 solo and three assisted tackles and two sacks. Freshman Derek Giannetti (Upper Dublin) has averaged 38.7 yards on 41 punts with 14 landing inside the 20 and five punts of 50 yards or more. Freshman Teddy Conrad (Central Bucks West) has carried the ball 126 times for 470 yards and seven touchdowns. He also has 12 receptions for 96 yards. Kahlil Pittman (Abington) has 20 receptions for 150 yards and two touchdowns. He also has 34 carries for 109 yards.
Sophomore cornerback Shawnte Carroll (Harry S. Truman) had his first interception in East Stroudsburg’s 44-3 win over Millersville on Saturday. Sophomore linebacker Dennis Lynch (Pennsbury) recorded a fumble. Junior outside linebacker Matt Freed (Souderton) had seven tackles, including one for a five-yard loss, and now has 101 tackles for the season.
Freshman Brandon McManus (North Penn) has connected on 12 of 17 field goal attempts for Temple so far in his rookie season. In the Owls’ 27-24 come-from-behind win over Navy on Saturday, McManus connected on a 45-yard field goal that put the Owls on top 17-10. It was his longest of the season. The Owls are 6-3 and in contention for a bowl bid.
Nick Gounaris (Pennsbury) had seven tackles in Lock Haven’s 27-0 loss to Gannon University on Oct. 27.
Jon Natter (Abington) had 10 tackles in Widener’s 24-0 loss to Lebanon Valley on Saturday.
D’Andre Webb (Harry S. Truman) scored on a four-yard run in West Chester’s 30-14 win over Bloomsburg. Webb finished the game with 25 yards rushing and 35 receiving yards. Dylan Manni (Bensalem) had one reception for eight yards for Bloomsburg.
MEN’S SOCCER
Ryan Richter (William Tennent) contributed a goal and an assist in LaSalle’s 5-1 win over St. Joe’s on Sunday. Teammate Jeff Pio (William Tennent) contributed an assist.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
University of Massachusetts sophomore Meghan Collins (North Penn) has seen action in 14 games and started nine after playing in all 18 games as a freshman. Collins is a defensive back.
Sophomore Colleen Collins (North Penn) has started all 18 games for Providence College, contributing two goals and two assists for the Friars (8-8-3).
Emily Froehlich (Pennridge) scored the only goal in Kutztown’s 1-0 win over Bloomsburg on Saturday.
Senior Gayle Kuntzmann (Hatboro-Horsham) finished her collegiate career at Shippensburg second in school history for career goals. She is the only player over the last four years to appear in all 78 of Shippensburg’s games. During her tenure, Kuntzmann scored 46 goals and contributed 18 assists for 110 career points. She made 66 starts. She was an All-PSAC first team member last year, a second team selection in ’07 and the PSAC East Rookie of the Year in 2006. On Thursday, Kuntzmann scored the game winner at the 84:44 mark, giving Shippensburg a 3-2 win over Mansfield.
Kelly Modes (Neshaminy) was named the PSAC Eastern Division Player of the Week for the period ending Oct. 25. Modes scored two goals in a 2-0 week for Bloomsburg. She scored the second goal of the game in the Huskies’ 2-0 road win over Chestnut Hill. She scored the first goal of the game in Bloomsburg’s 3-1 win over Shippensburg. For the season, Modes leads the team with seven goals and three assists.
Sophomore Devon Miniscalco (Council Rock South) was named the Championship Award Guys Athlete of the Week at East Stroudsburg for her performance for the women’s soccer team. She has a team-high 11 goals with three assists from her spot at midfield where she has started all 17 games for the Warriors this season. Miniscalco was in the starting lineup at back for all 22 games last season as ESU made the PSAC semifinals for the second straight year. She moved to midfield this season and has been integral to an offense that has scored 50 goals for a PSAC-leading average of 2.9 per game. East Stroudsburg is 10-5-2 overall and 4-4-2 in the PSAC East.
Miniscalco scored the game winner a minute into overtime in East Stroudsburg’s 2-1 win at Bloomsburg on Wednesday. Samantha Fox (William Tennent) scored the game’s first goal to give Bloomsburg a 1-0 lead. The win propelled ESU into the playoffs for the third straight season.
MEN’S SWIMMING
Ben Safran (Central Bucks West) won the 200 fly with a time of 2:03.40 in Bloomsburg’s 146-11 loss to West Chester on Saturday. Teammate Jeremy Frey (Central Bucks East) took first in the 200 IM with a time of 2:03.10 and was second in the 200 free with a time of 1:49.10. In the 100 breast, Tim Dorsch (Souderton) was second with a time of 1:02.49 while Nick Ortlieb (North Penn) finished third with a time of 1:03.58.
Senior Matt Slomiany (North Penn) won the 1,000-freestyle with a time of 10:39.74 in Widener’s 108-97 win over Scranton. Junior Jesse Bregman (Springfield) captured the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 49.41.
Senior Nate Ryan (Hatboro-Horsham) finished first in the 50 free (22.27) in Shippensburg’s 111-94 win over Canisius on Thursday. Ryan as well as teammate Tim Smullen (Upper Dublin) were part of the winning 200 free relay (1:29.74).
WOMEN’S SWIMMING
Freshman Megan Lafferty (Upper Dublin) won the 100 back (56.51) and was a member of the winning 400 free relay team (3.25.33) in the University of Maryland’s wins over Duke and North Carolina State in its ACC opener on Saturday.
Freshman Paige Whitmire (Souderton) had a successful collegiate debut at Penn State, winning the 50 free (24.68). She also was a member of the winning 200 medley relay (1.50.74) in Penn State’s 174-60 win over St. Bonaventure.
Kasey Campbell (Neshaminy) finished second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:06.59 in Lock Haven’s 109-66 win over Mansfield on Sunday. Rachel Vagnoni (Norristown) finished second in the 50 free with a time of 59.11.
Tyla Conicello (Upper Merion) was part of the winning 400 freestyle relay (3:52.74) in Widener’s 122-83 loss to Scranton on Saturday.
Madeline Barlow (Pennsbury) was part of the winning 400 medley relay (4:03.31) in Bloomsburg’s 146-116 loss to West Chester on Saturday.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Junior outside hitter Alyson Stark (Council Rock South) had a season-high 18 kills in her first match back on the court in five weeks in East Stroudsburg’s 3-2 loss to Shippensburg on Friday night. Stark had seven kills in a 3-1 loss to Millersville on Saturday. She has 701 career kills with one match remaining in her junior season.
Christina Laury (Hatboro-Horsham) led Lock Haven’s defense with 38 digs in the Lady Eagles 3-1 win over Shippensburg. It was the team’s 21st straight win in match play. The Lady Eagles are 29-4 overall, 16-2 in PSAC action. On Friday, Laury had six aces and 20 digs in Lock Haven’s 3-0 win over Millersville.
Sophomore setter Katherine Tohanczyn (North Penn) had a team-high four kills in Chestnut Hill’s 3-0 loss to the University of the Sciences on Tuesday. Teammate Nicole Corrado (Souderton) had three kills.
