MEN’S BASKETBALL
Freshman Nick Christian (Bensalem) scored 18 points and added three rebounds in Philadelphia University’s 67-60 loss to Kutztown on Saturday. Sophomore Jimmy Connolly (Souderton) added 17 points while teammate Eddie DiRugeris (Pennsbury) contributed two points, three assists and two steals.
Rakeem Boyd (Harry S. Truman) had three points, three rebounds and a blocked shot in Lock Haven’s 68-43 loss to Mansfield on Friday.
Incoming freshman guard A.J. Picard (Souderton) will look to help Goldey-Beacom make another CACC playoff run in 2010-11.
Senior Lavoy Allen (Pennsbury) contributed 12 points, three rebounds, six assists and one steal in No. 22 Temple’s 82-49 rout of Toledo on Sunday. In Friday night’s season opener, Allen had nine points, nine rebounds, three assists and three blocks in Temple’s 62-56 win over Seton Hall.
East Stroudsburg redshirt sophomore Matt Labick (Plymouth Whitemarsh) saw action in eight games last year and is expected to contribute at wing for the Warriors.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Freshman Kelsey Ryan (Neshaminy) contributed four points and seven rebounds in Lock Haven’s 63-58 win over Post University on Saturday. Teammate Heather McHugh (Norristown) added three points and an assist.
Liz Leer (Abington) contributed eight points and five rebounds in American’s 60-59 loss to High Point University on Sunday. On Friday, Leer had 15 points and 13 rebounds in American’s 72-68 win over East Carolina.
Redshirt junior forward Brittany McClain (Harry S. Truman) scored a career high 22 points in East Stroudsburg’s 74-70 overtime loss to Clarion on Saturday.
Millersville – the reigning PSAC Eastern Division title holder – has been chosen to repeat as champion for the 2010-11 season. The conference’s coaches selected the Marauders to finish atop the East in the preseason poll, and sophomore Mashira Newman (Upper Dublin) was named to the preseason All-PSAC East Team. As a redshirt freshman last year, Newman averaged 10.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.5 steals a game. She was ranked in the top 10 in Division II in steals with 108, marking the most steals by a freshman in program history. To add to the record books, Newman knocked down 101 free throws last year and shattered a 20-year-old record of 83 charity stripe shots made by a freshman.
Freshman Shayla Felder (Cheltenham) contributed 10 points and two assists in Dowling’s 77-64 loss to No. 14 Franklin Pierce on Sunday. In her collegiate debut on Saturday, Felder – who started at guard – contributed six points in Dowling’s 57-48 loss to Stonehill.
Misha Horsey (Cheltenham) had eight points, seven assists and three steals in Stonybrook’s 81-73 loss to Fordham on Saturday. In Friday’s season opener, Horsey had 12 points, two assists and a steal in Stonybrook’s 77-60 win over Troy.
Ashley Gale (Cheltenham) scored 12 points, added nine rebounds and a career-high tying five steals and two assists in LaSalle’s 64-57 win over Loyola (MD) on Sunday. In Saturday’s 57-42 loss to Villanova, Gale had seven points, three rebounds and two steals off the bench.
Senior Addie Micir (Council Rock North) scored 12 points – hitting four three-pointers – and chipped in three assists, two steals and a rebound in Princeton’s 78-37 rout of Farlieigh Dickinson in the 2010-11 opener on Saturday. Prior to the game, the team unveiled its first NCAA Tournament banner after going 26-3 in 2009-10 and earning the Ivy League’s automatic bid with a perfect 14-0 mark.
MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Penn State freshman Nick Scarpello (Central Bucks West) finished as the Nittany Lions’ fifth for the first time this season, posting a 40th-place effort in his first 10K appearance at Saturday’s NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships. Scarpello finished in a time of 31:32. Penn State finished fourth as a team.
FIELD HOCKEY
Junior Taryn Gjurich (North Penn) scored her seventh goal of the season in North Carolina’s 5-1 win over No. 12 Old Dominion in a second round NCAA Tournament game on Sunday. The Tar Heels, defending national champions and winners of two of the three most recent crowns, will face Virginia in the NCAA semifinals in College Park, Md., next Friday.
Senior Katie O’Donnell (Wissahickon) contributed three assists in top-seeded Maryland’s 3-1 come-from-behind win over No. 5 Connecticut in an NCAA Tournament second round game on Sunday. The win propelled the Terps into the NCAA semifinals which will be played in College Park next Friday. In Friday’s opening round 4-2 win over Massachusetts, O’Donnell contributed a goal and an assist.
Penn State made its 25th appearance in the NCAA Tournament as the Nittany Lions earned an at-large bid and hosted the first two rounds of the playoffs. In Saturday’s opening round game, Penn State fell to fourth-ranked Syracuse 2-1 in overtime. Nicole Nelson (Souderton) was in the starting lineup for Syracuse while Penn State featured SOL alums Jessica Longstreth (Council Rock North), Jenny Purvis (Hatboro-Horsham), Lauren Purvis (Hatboro-Horsham) and Casey McCartin (Hatboro-Horsham). In Sunday’s second round, Syracuse fell to Ohio State 3-2.
Senior Brieann Wolfe (Pennridge) contributed an assist in Bloomsburg’s 4-0 win over C.W. Post on Saturday.
Jennifer Mullen (Hatboro-Horsham) and Brittany Kocis (Central Bucks East) were two of eight seniors in the starting lineup for East Stroudsburg’s regular season finale against No. 7 Millersville on Saturday. The fourth-ranked Warriors defeated the Marauders 2-1. Mullen collected three saves in 18 minutes of action in goal.
Freshman Kelly McCartin (Hatboro-Horsham) contributed a goal and teammate Julie Rosenkaimer (North Penn) had an assist in Kutztown’s 6-0 win over Mercy College on Saturday.
FOOTBALL
Kutztown sophomore quarterback Kevin Morton (Abington) is one of 24 nominees for the prestigious Harlon Hill Trophy, which honors the NCAA Division II College Football Player of the Year. Morton has fueled Kutztown’s memorable season as he is on pace to re-write the entire Kutztown passing record book. A two-time PSAC Eastern Division Offensive Player of the Week, Morton has thrown 32 touchdown passes, the second most in a single season in school history. He has thrown for 2,993 yards while completing 61.4 percent of his passes (216-for-352). Morton leads the PSAC in total offense (325.6) and passing average (299.3). Morton, who has a touchdown pass in 16 straight games, has thrown for at least 300 yards in KU’s last four games.
Kutztown closed out its regular season by holding off Gannon University for a 27-24 win on Saturday. The win was not secured until Alex DiNolfi (Norristown) intercepted his second pass of the game with six seconds remaining. Kevin Morton had a pair of touchdown passes and completed 23-of-32 passes for 288 yards. Teammate Josh Mastromatto (Upper Dublin) was on the receiving end of a four-yard TD pass from Morton.
East Stroudsburg linebacker Matt Freed (Souderton), a two-time All-American, is the only defensive player among the 24 national candidates for the Harlon Hill Award recognizing the top college football player in Division II. Freed has 24 double-digit tackle performances in 34 career starts. He entered Saturday’s game with 385 career tackles, 44.0 tackles for a loss and 21.5 sacks and is a two-time Daktronics Division II first team All-American and third team AP Little All-American. This season he has 106 tackles, 13 tackles for a loss, 6.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and an interception. He has had three straight 100-tackle seasons, posting 132 tackles in ESU’s NCAA playoff season in 2009 and 126 tackles in his first year as a starter in 2008. Freed was a first team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American last year. He is a three-time first team Academic All-District choice and was a semifinalist for this year’s Walter V. Campbell Award from the National Football Foundation.
East Stroudsburg fell to Edinboro 28-25 in the final game of its season on Saturday. Freed closed out his All-America career with a season-high 14 tackles, giving him 399 career tackles. Redshirt senior tight end Matt Brown (Souderton) hauled in the first touchdown pass of his career.
Teddy Conrad (Central Bucks West) had a two-yard touchdown run in Ursinus College’s 41-21 win over Dickinson on Saturday.
Bloomsburg earned its eighth trip in school history to the NCAA Division II playoffs. The Huskies were selected as the sixth seed from Super Region One and will face third seed California (Pa) on Saturday. SOL alums on Bloomsburg’s roster are Shaun Moore (North Penn), Ryan Dickerson (Souderton) and D. Solomon Oliver (Cheltenham).
MEN’S SOCCER
LaSalle senior forward Ryan Richter (William Tennent) was named A-10 Offensive Player and Student-Athlete of the Year. Richter netted 14 goals and a total of 30 points to lead both the Atlantic 10 and the Soccer Six. He leads the league in seven offensive categories: shots (89), shots per game (5.24), points (30), points per game (1.76), goals per game (0.82) and game-winning goals (7). Three of his game-winning goals came in 1-0 LaSalle wins, all over Atlantic-10 opponents. Richter’s 30 points ties him for sixth on LaSalle’s all-time list. In the past two seasons, Richter has racked up 51 points on a total of 21 goals and nine assists. For his career, Richter has 28 goals (5th all-time) and 13 assists (10th all-time) for 69 points (fifth all-time). Teammate Jeff Pio (William Tennent) followed up last year’s Atlantic 10 All-Rookie and Soccer Six Co-Rookie of the Year selections with a spot on the all-conference honorable mention list. Pio directed the Explorer midfield, and for his career, he has four goals and five assists in 35 games played and has been a starter in every game he has appeared in since mid-September of his freshman year.
Jidell Roach (Abington) contributed an assist in second-seeded LaSalle’s 2-0 win over fifth-seeded and defending champion Saint Louis in Saturday’s  A-10 semifinal contest. The Explorers fell to Xavier 2-0 in Sunday’s title game.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
IUP junior Melissa Kornock (North Penn) was named to the PSAC all-conference third team. She set career highs in goals (13), assists (6) and points (32). The 32 points is the ninth highest single season total in school history.
Kutztown senior defender Chelsea Deeter (Neshaminy) was named to the PSAC all-conference first team. A four-time all PSAC first team selection, Deeter has been a major factor in KU’s defense during her career, and she has helped Kutztown record 37 career shutouts. She was part of a unit that set a school record for shutouts in 2009 with 13. She was a Daktronics all-Atlantic Region honorable mention and member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) all-Atlantic Region second team.
 
 
MEN’S SWIMMING
Ben Safran (Central Bucks West) finished second in the 200-fly with a time of 2:00.82 in Bloomsburg’s 182-114 loss to Clarion on Saturday. Teammate Mark DiLemmo (Central Bucks East) finished third with a time of 2:03.01.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING
Amy Rowland (Upper Moreland) captured first place in the 500 free with a time of 5:37.34 in East Stroudsburg’s 170-69 win over Mansfield on Saturday. She also finished second in the 100 back (1:06.53) and was part of the second place 200 free relay that finished with a time of 1:46.01.
