MEN’S BASKETBALL
Junior Chris McDevitt (Central Bucks West) scored had a team-high 21 points, which included five three-pointers, in Widener’s come-from-behind 85-74 win over Neumann on Saturday. Both were career highs for McDevitt. On Tuesday night, McDevitt scored eight points in Widener’s 72-53 loss to fifth-ranked Richard Stockton.
Senior forward Brian Oleksiak (Abington) had a game-high 12 rebounds while also contributing seven points and three steals in Shippensburg’s 63-53 win over Wilmington (Del.) on Tuesday. The Red Raiders are 4-0.
Freshman Dalton Pepper (Pennsbury) scored five points in West Virginia’s 73-66 win over Texas A&M in Friday’s semifinal of the 76 Classic in Anaheim, Calif. He was two-of-three from the floor with a three-pointer. With the win, West Virginia improved to 4-0. Pepper has seen playing time in all four games.
Lavoy Allen (Pennsbury) had 16 points and a career-high seven assists in Temple’s 66-46 win over Ball State on Tuesday.
Freshman Eddie DiRugeris (Pennsbury) contributed 12 points and two assists in Philadelphia University’s 69-52 win over Millersville on Saturday. The Rams are 5-2 on the season (1-0 in CACC play). DiRugeris has started six of seven games this season. He is averaging 5.6 points while playing an average of 31 minutes a game. Freshman Jim Connolly (Souderton) has seen action in five games this season.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Princeton junior Addie Micir (Council Rock North) was named the Player of the Week for the week ending Nov. 22. Micir led Princeton in scoring as the Tigers posted a 2-0 record, averaging 19 points per game and scoring 38 points. She added seven rebounds, six assists and two steals. Micir shot 10-for-18 from long range and was two-for-two from the foul line. She shot 52 percent from the field, going 13-for-25. Against Delaware, Micir had a team-high 18 points and six assists. She also had five rebounds and a steal. Delaware’s Elena Della Donne scored 35 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, but Princeton overcame that big performance by putting four players in double figures. Earlier in the week, Micir matched a personal best, nailing six three-pointers to score a team-best 20 points against American. Princeton is off a to a 3-0 start, the program’s best start in 14 years. The last time the Tigers started the year 3-0 was in 1995-96 when the team played in the WNIT, finishing with a 20-11 record.
Forward Jackie Shunkwiler (Neshaminy) had 13 points while teammate Jenna Peoples (Cheltenham) added nine points and seven rebounds in Delaware Valley’s 77-65 loss to Rowan on Tuesday.
FIELD HOCKEY
University of Maryland junior Katie O’Donnell (Wissahickon) is a nominee for this year’s prestigious Honda Award, the award given to the nation’s top field hockey player. The nomination is O’Donnell’s second for the award after being named a nominee as a freshman in 2007. On Monday, O’Donnell was named the nation’s Offensive Most Valuable Player for the second straight year and National Player of the Year by womensfieldhockey.com. She also was named an NFHCA First Team All-American for the third consecutive year and the All-Mid Atlantic Region Player of the Year. She led the nation in points (87) and assists (31) this season. O’Donnell finished the year ranked second in the ACC in goals (28). Over the course of the year, she became the school’s single-season (87) and career points leader (208). She broke the ACC and Maryland career assist records and now has 74 career assists. She is the first player in Maryland history to break 25 goals and 30 assists in a season. With her performance this year, O’Donnell earned her 200th point, making her the 24th player in NCAA history to break the 200-point mark. An elementary education major and a recipient of the Bob and Carol Baker Director’s Circle Scholarship, O’Donnell earned spots on both the ACC’s honor roll and the Maryland honor roll in the 2008-09 academic year. Earlier this fall, she was featured as the cover story in the fall 2009 edition of NCAA’s Champions magazine. Other nominees for the Honda award are Paige Selenski (Virginia), Katie Reinprecht (Princeton) and Loren Shere (Connecticut).
Bloomsburg senior Caitlyn Koczynski (Neshaminy) was named a second team NFHCA All-American. The senior goalie finished third in the nation with a save percentage of .806 and second in Division II in goals against average at 0.91 while making 79 saves and posting two shutouts.
Sarah Hasson (Central Bucks South) earned honorable mention All-Ivy recognition after a successful freshman season at the University of Pennsylvania.
Temple senior Mandi Ruth (Souderton) was named to the Atlantic-10 all-conference second team. She was second on the team with four goals and six assists.
LaSalle freshman Rebecca Chylack (Souderton) was named a Freshman All-American by womensfieldhockey.com. Chylack led the Explorers in goals (11), shots (64), game-winning goals (three) and defensive saves (three). She also tied junior Beth Carey for the team lead in points (25). She was recently named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year and also earned a place on the Atlantic 10 First team. The Souderton native led all Atlantic 10 freshmen in points, goals and shots and set a program record for points and goals by a freshman. She was also a second team all-region pick. Her 11 goals were the most by an Explorer since 1990, and her 25 points, third all-time in a season at LaSalle, are the most since 1980. Chylack was the only Atlantic 10 player to be named to the womensfieldhockey.com Freshman All-American team.
FOOTBALL
Freshman Brandon McManus (North Penn) connected on a 24-yard field goal in Temple’s 35-17 loss to the Ohio Bobcats on Friday. The loss snapped a nine-game winning streak for Temple, which now awaits a bowl bid on Dec. 6. The Owls are 9-3.
East Stroudsburg linebacker Matt Freed (Souderton) earned first team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America honors, and he was also named the Daktronics Division II Super Region One Defensive Player of the Year. Freed finished his redshirt junior season with 132 tackles, 18 tackles for a loss and 10 sacks while leading the Warriors to the NCAA Division II playoffs. He will be one of four players eligible to receive the Daktronics Division II National Defensive Player of the Year award and was a first team Daktronics All-America selection last season. In the classroom, Freed became the fifth ESU football player to be named to the Academic All-America team and the third to earn a spot on the first team. A history major, Freed has a 3.70 cumulative GPA and maintained a 4.0 GPA during the 2008-09 academic year.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Rutgers senior Ashley Jones (Neshaminy) earned Big East second team honors this season. Before injuring her leg in the game against DePaul, Jones was on a scoring tear – tallying eight goals in six games, including four for game winners.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Lock Haven senior Christina Laury (Hatboro-Horsham) was named to the 2009 Daktronics NCAA Division II All-Atlantic Region second team. Laury led Lock Haven with 702 digs and also recorded 61 aces. In her team’s win over Alderson-Broaddus, she had 37 digs and also turned in a 12-ace effort in a win over Cheyney.
